Best Choice of Burn for Commander.

Commander Deck Help forum

Posted on Aug. 27, 2015, 7:14 p.m. by RoarMaster

So I have a Naya(WGR) Commander deck and I have one burn slot available.

Now burn is pretty bad in EDH/Commander in general, and that is why I am only running 1. The deck is VERY ramp heavy(about 15-20 cards depending on what you consider ramp), so Id like to take advantage of this with an X cost spell.

At the moment I am considering:

Clan Defiance - Seems fairly legit, X dmg to 3 sources is pretty damn efficient, and it hits land, air and players.

Bonfire of the Damned - Potentially a single player boardwipe with the added bonus of burning face too. Problem being if you dont Miracle it its very inefficient.

Comet Storm - Theoretically can be better or worse than Clan Defiance depending on number of targets.

If you all can help me decide between these, or maybe even suggest a new one with reasons its better, that would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance :)

I would honestly run Clan Defiance. It's a great mana sink and it can hit multiple targets without having to sink even more mana into it like with Comet Storm.

I like Comet Storm. The instant speed is super relevant at times, not to mention you can hit players/planeswalkers with it too.

Comet Storm is an instant? Why have I been thinking it was a sorcery all this time?

Eh, I honestly don't like Comet Storm that much. It gets to be a lot of mana if you want to kill multiple things. I think Bonfire is better if you have a dece amount of library manipulation.

canterlotguardian: I think that's a question only you can answer :P

Out of the three I would go Comet Storm, if your sole purpose was to hit players/planeswalkers

If all you want to do is hit their face, go with Banefire. Otherwise, go for Comet Storm.

Of course in my decks I will always jam Bonfire of the Damned for those sweet topdeck moments.

pretty sure Riku is the best General for running a deck like burn. If you went Riku then Id say comet storm all the way. Otherwise I am unsure

Araganor lol, way to promote three cards :P

SaintHipster No im playing Naya colors, as in red, green, and white. Marath, Will of the Wild.

In general it seems as if Comet Storm has the most going for it as far as versatility goes, and its pretty damn efficient as well. I think the aforementioned instant speed is really what makes it stand out though your right. Ill probably end up going with it. Thanks for the input everyone, I can now sleep at night ;)

Out of curiosity, are you running Ashnod's Altar in your deck? If not, your really should be. And with Comet Storm its fairly game ending.

enpc I would run it, because it is awesome, but this deck runs no infinite combos, and Ashnod's Altar goes infinite with sooo many cards that are already in the deck that I cannot use it :'( I do run a lot of comboish stuff, just nothing that technically goes infinite, no matter how close. See Mana Echoes as an example of what I do use.

Mana Echoes is already infinite tokens with your commander, so you may want to reconsider that.

No Boza, its not infinite, you need enough colored mana from land or other sources in order to recast marath each time.

Marath, Will of the Wild + Ivy Lane Denizen + Mana Echoes says "what?". Can I ask why you're avoiding infinite combos, especially with Marath as your commander?

enpc Yeah I can easily say I am avoiding infinite combos with Marath, although a couple may make it in just because they are made up of cards that are simply too good with marath to leave out just because they might be drawn together in a game, like your example of Ivy Denizen. I even mention how too comboey mana echoes almost is for the deck in my description. Id link the deck but not sposed to here I think. Anyway I'm new to this HTML thing or whatever and half of the description is in bullet point and the other half isnt, lol, a work in progress...

Have you considered cards lime Hurricane and Earthquake for multi-kills or forced draws? (At least I think it would be a draw if you hurricanes the whole table for lethal ...)

I think Marath, Will of the Wild just owns in general and the party-line "accepted opinion" is that burn.deck via x-spells is the territory of Rosheen Meanderer while riku is more of an infinite turns / combo-out guy.

That being said, this is commander so w/e - I use Wort the raid mother for my burn deck. I like the crazy gobliny token-dd synergy that amps up the Mana Echoes type synergies and features a variety of dd tactics ranging from Kyren Negotiations to Comet Storm. But like I said, this is commander so do w/e you find fun!

guessling Id rather some one win then force a draw usually.

Yeah, this deck is not really a burn deck at all. As I said in the post, I have only one burn spell in the deck and was looking for the best fit. This deck is more ramp and tokens than burn or counter manipulation.

I too have had a wort deck, lotsa fun!

Oh, and thanks for the Kyren Negotiations! Somehow I did not know this card existed :O Its going right into my Purphoros deck :)

Other token friendly burn cards include Burn at the Stake. Maybe you knew that one, though

I like Vicious Shadows as well. Usually people like to deal with it before a board wipe - and an extra turn or so between wipes can help a token deck quite a bit in multiplayer. It is expensive, but with enough ramp, it could hit the board.

Maybe x burn spells are what you still want, though. I like the ones that either are hard to counter or can flash back. I like Banefire and (I forget what the flashback one is called just now).

The two cards I couldn't think of were Devil's Play and Kaervek's Torch.

The ones named here are all solid choices. Any spell is ideal, especially if you can get infinite mana. Even infinite colorless will work if you have some open.

I'm going to throw Red Sun's Zenith in here too. Being able to use it more than once is pretty nice. So is the exile ability.
