Advice for dealing with settle the wreckage in green!

Commander Deck Help forum

So I am making a Freyalise, Llanowar's Fury deck and I know someone in my play group uses settle the wreckage and I would like to know if there is anyway I can stop settle the wreckage from wiping my board. I don't want to use Overwhelming stampede and then the person in my play group respond's with settle the wreckage and my board is gone :/.

Any advice will be appreciated!

I don’t think there are a ton of answers besides don’t swing with everything you have. Since green doesn’t have a lot of answers to instant spells being cast. Maybe just hold back any creatures you think you’ll absolutely need if he has mana up to use Settle the Wreckage .

Some colorless answers would probably be Kozilek, the Great Distortion and keeping a 4 drop in hand just in case. Null Brooch is also colorless counter spell. Also Amulet of Safekeeping will make him have to spend a little more on his Settle the Wreckage

Hey, Settle works by your opponent first targeting a player to cast it on therefore if you have hexproof your opponent can't target you thus can't cast Settle against you.

Green doesn't have a card that specifically gives you hexproof there are many that gives your creatures hexproof, but that will not stop Settle. You have to have hexproof. The Orbs will stop Settle, but are pretty lackluster cards to play in an Elf deck if that is their only use.

Genesis Wave , Duskwatch Recruiter  Flip and Riftsweeper are more synergistic budget cards to play in an Elf deck when against Settle. They won't stop Settle, but they will help to recover from it. Wave and Recruiter are ways to use the extra mana you will get from lands that you get after a Settle to get more Elves/creatures/permanents. Riftsweeper is an Elf and she can remove a creature who was exiled by Settle from the exile zone and put it back into your library.

Eternal Witness and Regrowth are good cards that can recur Overwhelming Stampede so you can cast it again when you have recovered from Settle. Evolutionary Leap and Greater Good are ways to sac your creatures so they will not be exiled. Leap costs one mana per creature to sac and Greater is a free sac, but requires discarding cards after drawing. It's easier to recur Elves when they go to the graveyard rather than being exiled.

Conqueror's Flail wasn't mentioned yet.

In my experience, the best way to combat a card like Settle the Wreckage while playing mono-green is to stop opponents from being able to cast spells on your turn. City of Solitude and Conqueror's Flail are your best options here. Dosan the Falling Leaf is a third, but fragile option. You can also run Riftsweeper to get important exiled pieces back.

Depends on your own reliance on instant speed stuff (but you should be able to make up the mana) - Defense Grid will force him to keep more lands up and take turns off doing other things.

This won't help now, but if you ever decide to recreate the deck a little to splash white, you'll have some very nice answers. Even switching the commander to Gaddock Teeg would on it's own give you an answer and you also get access to the best possible answer in Teferi's Protection . I'd be interested in seeing your current decklist to know how vital Freyalise is to your overall plan. Swapping in Gaddock Teeg and splashing in multi-color mana just to support it and Teferi's Protection would be really easy and not disrupt the rest of the deck too much, Imagine.
