40 Card Commander For Tournament

Commander Deck Help forum

So in a few weeks we have planned to do a 40 Card Commander for fun (no prizes) tournament with normal Commander rules. You see the problem is..... I've never played a Commander game and I thought this would be a great way to get into it. I know the very basics but don't really know what to play. So I was wondering if you fellow Tappers could help provide some deck ideas or even what to play I guess. Cheers :D

What do you enjoy playing?

I would look into Tiny Leaders format (50-card Commander variant, with cards of 3 CMC or less) and build with that in mind, with a couple of cards that enable infinite combos.

An abzan deck with anafenza in command, but with some cool infinite combos in there would be my pick.

Yeah, what Boza said. Just look up highly rated tiny leaders decks on here and take out the worst cards. If you're using regular commander rules, don't forget to add Demonic Tutor and Vampiric Tutor back in, since their banned in TL. There's some other good ones banned too.

Luutamo's Doran, the Siege Tower deck is pretty popular.

Decks that have done very well at tiny leader tournaments at my lgs:
- Ezuri, Renegade Leader (1st place three times in a row)
- Animar, Soul of Elements (my deck, 2nd place three times in a row)
- Alesha, Who Smiles at Death
- Doran, the Siege Tower
- Mikaeus, the Lunarch

Personally, I've never played TL, but I can recommend is Marath, Will of the Wild deck because it not only gets stronger as you cast it over and over (as the CMC increases by 2 every time you use all of his +1/+1 counters), but can also is one of the most flexible Commanders I've seen in a while. Want to populate? No prob. Wanna burn? Easy. Beef other creatures? All right. I highly recommend him (which is ironic enough, because that's the commander deck that kicks my ass at home. Frickin' premade decks lol)
