The Eight Rare Challenge Part 5. Modern

Challenges and Articles forum

Posted on Nov. 19, 2014, 7:22 p.m. by TheGamer

So, at a PTQ I went to a couple months ago, they had an option where you could participate in the Eight Rare Challenge. And, I feel like it is very self explanatory. Create a Modern Legal deck, with only Eight Rares! This includes lands. No more! And also, sideboards will not be included.

Now, to keep this interesting, don't use the same deck as someone already did. If someone submitted a Twin deck, no one else submit Twin! As soon as we reach eight more players, I will fire a tournament!

Also, incase anyone is wondering, there is now a meta! We've done this 4 times, so I can enlighten you on the winners! The decks to take first place have been Infect, Delver, Vampires, and Death and Taxes. Affinity and Delver have also been very popular in the challenges.

Good luck to all and Happy Deckbuilding!

Well hell, my primary modern deck already fits this description (It actually has only 6 rares in the main deck)

Please ignore my sideboard for this challenge, sorry decklink won't function:

New entry, hand / land denial fueled by Life from the Loam. Mana base is super jank, but I used to run a 3 color version of this deck on the same kind of mana base, so it should work out fine.

Aether Vial is uncommon as that's the original printing's rarity.

While that is true, it seems kinda broken at uncommon, and was re-printed as a rare in MM. But if so, I'll add another 4 rares to my deck.

Joking101: It is uncommon. I know its kind of OP, but its functional/actual set was uncommon.

I never really did follow deck archetypes, so if a brew of mine happens to fit one, cool! Here's my 8 rares moden brew entry:

My combo originally used Goblin Tinkerer, which is why I thought to use goblins... to bad the tinkerer is not modern legal after all that. :(

Here's the bracket:

Storm VS Burn

Equipment VS Stompy

Rock VS Goblins

Splinters VS Naya

November 25, 2014 10:39 a.m.

TheGamer says... #18

Storm VS Burn: Game 1, The storm count just couldn't get high enough, and Storm fell to a huge amount of burn being dropped. Game 2 was taken by Storm, after a turn of lots of acceleration thanks to Goblin Electromancer and the cantrips was able to create a huge storm count, and be able to Grapeshot twice for enough damage. Hellspark Elemental after Hellspark Elemental quickly ended Storm, and that makes Burn your 2-1 winner!

Equipment VS Stompy: Game 1 Equipement had a very good start with a 5/1 double strike, but that quickly dies to Garruk Relentless  Flip. Experiment One and Thrun, the Last Troll quickly sealed away that game. Game 2, Equipment was able to forge the perfect warrior with multiple equips. Game 3, equipments was able to create quite the soldier, but the aggression from Stompy was too much, which makes Stompy your 2-1 winner!

Rock VS Goblins: Game 1, goblins was pretty mana screwed, especially after his two AEther Vials were destroyed off of a Maelstrom Pulse, but even after that, all his one drops swung aggressively and finished off the Rock, after playing no threats. Same thing happened game 2, except there was no mana screw. Goblins takes this match 2-0.

Splinters VS Zoo: Game 1, Splinters was screwed with a colorless source on the board, which screwed him on mana. So, Zoo was very aggressive as well. Game 2, the aggression from Zoo was too much. So Zoo wins this match 2-0.

The bracket:

Burn VS Stompy

Goblins VS Zoo

November 25, 2014 11:17 a.m.

TheGamer says... #19

Burn VS Stompy: Game 1, Burn used lots of burn to attack the opponent directly, and it payed off in game 1. For green couldn't get the job done. Stompy quickly won on turn 4, with an attack for 18. Burn just couldn't do enough damage! Game 3 was very close. Burn got Stompy to 2 life, and Stompy got burn to 1. Burn had to draw something useful off of his Browbeat, but he just drew into 2 lands and a Rift Bolt he couldn't cast, which makes Stompy your 2-1 winner!

Goblins VS Zoo: Game 1, the band of 3/3's and 2/3's that Zoo had easily overpowered the small 1/1's that Goblins had. Same instance Game 2. The small 1/1's couldn't over power the force of 2/3's and 3/3's. Even after Goblin Chieftain was played, it sucked a Lightning Bolt. Which makes Zoo your 2-0 winner!

Finals: Stompy VS Zoo

November 25, 2014 11:59 a.m.

TheGamer says... #20

Stompy VS Zoo: game 1 Zoo was able to slowly overpower the force of the Stompy monsters. Game 2, Thrun, the Last Troll with double Rancor quickly put the game away. Game 3, Stompy had a large flow of creatures that crushed mine.

So that makes TristanTaylorsVoice your Champion, taking out me, TheGamer out in the finals. Congrats to you Tristan and your Mono Green Deck! I will post another forum in the Challenges and Articles Section, but I'm not sure if it will fire.
