Requesting Suggestions for Budget EDH Builds

Challenges and Articles forum

Hey all!

I have a weekly deck series I’m working on! It’s called the Budget Commander Challenge (BCC for short). Every week, I make a $50 EDH deck with a commander selected from suggestions I receive from folks here on TappedOut.

Here’s a link to the most recent build if you’re interested! BCC Week 6 | Gallowbraid

I’m about a third of the way through my supply of commander suggestions at the time of writing, with about ten to fifteen commanders left.

I’d love it if y’all could give me some more inspiration!

I prefer commanders $5 and under, but higher cost commanders might make it in. If your suggestion gets built, I’ll give you a shoutout too (for what it’s worth)!

I was unsure of where to put this, and this seemed better than the EDH Deck Help forum, since this is a running series I’m creating on TappedOut. Feel free to move it to somewhere more appropriate if you feel that this isn’t the right forum. :)

Arcades, the Strategist walls, anybody? (Tbh I didn’t get to read your already-finished list, if you’ve already used Arcades then maybe Teysa Karlov tokens?)

Omniscience_is_life I actually haven’t built either yet!

Since you mentioned it, here’s a list of what I’ve already built.

I have built Gallowbraid, the Pako, Arcane Retriever and Haldan, Avid Arcanist pairing, Jhoira of the Ghitu, Triad of Fates, Slimefoot, the Stowaway, and the Krav, the Unredeemed and Regna, the Redeemer pairing, and I am currently building Kathril, Aspect Warper.

As I mentioned, there are several commanders that have already been suggested, but if something’s already been suggested and gets mentioned again, I’ll just jump it up the queue!

Mono colors are good places to start for budget builds I think. Maybe try finding something you don't normally see (explore the >200 commanders on EDHREC maybe?). Looking for off the beaten path themes can dredge up some janky cards to brew around too.

shuffles some random card pile

draw hmm, green... let's see

checks edhrec <200

Alrighty, so I found a couple interesting ones. Jedit Ojanen of Efrava seems like he could be a Voltron and/or Go Wide type. Turn cards into forests with Lush Growth and similar cards. Similarly, Anthousa, Setessan Hero could be another (aura/cantrip) Voltron/Go Wide type. With all the green power based draw you'd never run out of gas.

JANKYARD_DOG Thanks, I’ll add them onto the list, and I’ll probably use that strategy if I ever run out of cards on the list!

I think it would be rather easy to build a super sweet budget Noyan Dar, Roil Shaper deck. There are so many cards to chose from to make it truly uniquely yours.

I do a lot of budget building, and there are so many possibilities. I recently did Pramikon, Sky Rampart walls/vehicles & Rosheen Meanderer Hydras. I've also done Noyan Dar, Roil Shaper, Tolsimir Wolfblood green/white multicolor, Yisan, the Wanderer Bard with elves & archers. Jhoira, Weatherlight Captain makes a fun artifact deck. Wheel & Deal with Arjun, the Shifting Flame. I've been thinking of trying a Rienne, Angel of Rebirth multicolors matters deck. Talrand, Sky Summoner spells only. Slinn Voda, the Rising Deep makes a fun merfolk/sea monsters/bounce build (even built this one as a pauper deck). Lathliss, Dragon Queen makes a fun mono-colored dragon deck. I don't play black, so I don't really have suggestions that direction, except to pull up a search for legendary creatures, sort by lowest price, and see if any of them strike your fancy. Or look at a color pair on edhrec, search through for interesting commander options, and start building.

My cheapest, easiest to build, and most successful deck to date (please note I just got on this site so most of my decks are not yet listed) is my Narset's Nasty Temper, which is one I actually have listed under my username. It is mostly common/uncommon spells. I also do have an Arcades, the Strategist deck (not yet listed) but I found him really hard to protect without help from spells like Swiftfoot Boots or Lightning Greaves. I appreciate constructive feedback on my decks, so please leave me comments if you check out my decklists.
