Let's build some more tribal decks!

I'm as big of a fan of EDHREC as the next commander player, but their tribes page is looking really sad. Only 62 tribes have 4 or more decks out of the 235 possible creature types? That's sad!

So I say we put our heads together and build a couple here! Here are all the tribes that aren't yet on the EDHREC tribes page:

Berserker tribal would probably be easiest because of Lovisa Coldeyes.

Maybe there's a reason some of these are on the list. I mean come on, blinkmoth tribal EDH?

MagicalHacker says... #4

I completely agree, but no ninja tribal? No plant tribal? No rhino tribal? No chimera tribal? There are plenty that could work.

Yeti is nearly impossible, but youre right with the tribals

Whale should be pretty easy to do.

It's a shame I'm so bad at building EDH decks. lol

Some of those probably just fly under EDHREC's radar. For example, Berserkers is a natural Lovisa Coldeyes choice, and there are probably a ton of Berserkers in her decks (relatively), but she still gets counted as a Warrior lord. Likewise, I bet there are a ton of Kor in most Ally tribals, but Ally gets the hit on the tribal page. Same thing with Saprolings and Fungi. And then again, some of those "tribes" are one-offs, like Graveborn and Praetors...

But, disclaimer aside:

I'm thinking about Devils...I bet someone like Rakka Mar or Lyzolda, the Blood Witch would have a lot of fun with that.

Then there are Wolves, for whom Ulrich of the Krallenhorde  Flip is the obvious choice.

And Moonfolk! I actually am a firm proponent of Kynaios and Tiro of Meletis on this one, since Moonfolk do so much to bounce lands, and K&T are in awesome colors for land ramping, they play really well together. But there's also Patron of the Moon, I guess, if you're uncreative, haha.

February 26, 2017 9:55 a.m.

my favorite "tribe" is one that I play irl, 5 color changelings! give that one a try?

landofMordor, Patron of the Moon is actually a really funny and creative Commander. A friend of mine played him. There are really funny Combos with him.I was trying to build a nightmares Tribal. The Problem is: They have a really strong or at least funny Lord: Chainer, Dementia Master. But there are to less black nightmares. I was trying to build a Control reabimator subtheme, but... After this i tried something with flicker effects, but this din not really work. Maybe Rakdos, Lord of Riots would be a possibility. There are good enough black and red nightmared and you can play a classic burn subtheme. And i tried Atog, of course with Atogatog. Sadly there are only 11 other Atogs, otherwise it could be a really strong deck.

I think a major problem with edhrec's algorithms on this would probably be the fact that Changelings only count as shapeshifters rather than all creature types.

The Tribal page states that a deck must have at least 12 creatures, with 75% or more being from one tribe. So, if a tribe has less than 9 creatures, it is impossible to make a tribal deck that meets edhrec's criteria. Quick search... that immediately kicks antelope out of the list of possible tribes, and it is only the third one in the list!

On the bright side, probably terrible Advisor Tribal, mainly thrown together from edhrec top Orzhov cards!

You are absolutely right. Here are all the tribes with 8 or fewer creatures with how many creatures they have, so we know how close we are to that magic number of 9:

  • Antelope (7)
  • Assembly- Worker (4)
  • Aurochs (4)
  • Badger (4)
  • Beeble (3)
  • Blinkmoth (0)
  • Bringer (5)
  • Brushwagg (1)
  • Camarid (0)
  • Camel (3)
  • Caribou (0)
  • Carrier (4)
  • Citizen (0)
  • Cockatrice (3)
  • Coward (0)
  • Deserter (0)
  • Dreadnought (1)
  • Eye (2)
  • Ferret (1)
  • Flagbearer (2)
  • Germ (0)
  • Gnome (7)
  • Goat (8)
  • Graveborn (0)
  • Harpy (6)
  • Hippo (6)
  • Hippogriff (4)
  • Homarid (6)
  • Hyena (3)
  • Jellyfish (8)
  • Kirin (7)
  • Kobold (7)
  • Lamia (1)
  • Lammasu (2)
  • Lhurgoyf (8)
  • Manticore (5)
  • Masticore (3)
  • Metathran (8)
  • Mole (1)
  • Monger (5)
  • Mongoose (3)
  • Monkey (5)
  • Mystic (7)
  • Nautilus (2)
  • Nephilim (5)
  • Noggle (4)
  • Octopus (5)
  • Orb (0)
  • Orgg (4)
  • Oyster (1)
  • Pentavite (0)
  • Pest (1)
  • Phelddagrif (2)
  • Pincher (0)
  • Praetor (7)
  • Prism (0)
  • Rabbit (4)
  • Reflection (1)
  • Rigger (2)
  • Sable (1)
  • Sand (0)
  • Saproling (0)
  • Scion (0)
  • Scorpion (7)
  • Serf (0)
  • Servo (0)
  • Sheep (2)
  • Slith (6)
  • Slug (7)
  • Spawn (2)
  • Splinter (0)
  • Sponge (1)
  • Squid (4)
  • Squirrel (2)
  • Starfish (2)
  • Surrakar (4)
  • Survivor (0)
  • Tetravite (0)
  • Thalakos (7)
  • Triskelavite (0)
  • Volver (5)
  • Weird (7)
  • Whale (6)
  • Wolverine (6)
  • Wombat (1)
  • Worm (8)
  • Wraith (5)
  • Zubera (7)

That leaves us with two groups of tribes... Firstly, the group with more than 9 creatures but less than 12, which means that some creatures outside that tribe must be added to have enough creatures in the deck to count as a tribal deck:

  • Archon (10)
  • Basilisk (11)
  • Dauthi (10)
  • Elder (10)
  • Gremlin (9)
  • Hag (9)
  • Ninja (10)
  • Nymph (11)
  • Ouphe (11)
  • Pegasus (11)
  • Pilot (9)
  • Processor (11)
  • Salamander (9)
  • Siren (9)
  • Soltari (10)
  • Spike (11)
  • Thopter (11)
  • Turtle (10)
  • Yeti (11)

And lastly, we have all the tribes that have 12 or more creatures for them, which means you could build a tribal deck as defined by EDHREC.com using only creatures from the tribe.

I myself have limited down to only 12 tribes I am going to do.

Now, to figure out which one I want to do first...

I am continuing to work on some tribes, and will post my lists once I finish all 12 that I want to do.

Until then, a big thank you to The Bones To Build Your Tribal Deck by merrowMania and Tribal Tech (List of Every Single Tribe in Magic!) by Legendxp for creating such awesome resources that work perfectly for this cause!

I did this on a lark a while ago and then altered it up a bit so it would be a reasonable deck to play. Very slow, could be much better, haven't really tweaked any cards in a while, purposefully has no real interaction. But how often do you see Wall Tribal! :)

I apologize for not knowing how to read. I did not clearly understand this was for Commander only.

But maybe one of you EDH pros would like to expand on my Homunculus deck idea. I don't know if anyone has listed this one yet. I did not see one in this thread. I am a fan of comic relief or interesting themes with decks instead of necessarily building something to crush your enemies.

So at the moment my current favorite tribal deck is Fblthp. It is homunculus tribal which I never see anyone do. And it is for comedic value and not super serious. It's game plan is to distract you with it's little one-eyed abominations as it slowly grinds your library away.

Oh hey no worries, I dont mind discussion on 60-card formats, cause im sure it could inspire commander decks, and vice versa.
