8-Bit Deck Building Challenge #1
Challenges and Articles forum

Hello, Scytec here...and I have a challenge for you. :p I have decided that I would like to begin a thread for a tournament style deck construction challenge. Each month, perhaps twice a month if I really enjoy it, I will post a thread similar to this one with a challenge. The name of this tournament shall be the 8-Bit Deck Building Challenge (because each challenge will be based in a Block of my choice). The rules are simple:
Each challenge will consist of a player building and submitting one deck to me...preferably in the large format on this thread.
Each challenge will be Block construction, meaning I will choose a block and then you may use cards only in that block. For example: If I were to choose Theros block, the card pool you could use will be derived exclusively from Theros, Born of the Gods, and Journey Into Nyx.
These are meant to be fun but competitive challenges, unfortunately due to budget I will not be able to offer the winner a reward as of now, but in the future this may change depending on how life goes. :p
You will have one week after the beginning of a challenge to create and upload a deck. This gives us both ample time to get set-up and prepared for the battle.
Decks should be limited to 60 cards, and sideboards are limited to 5 cards for convenience in between matches...sorry for the limitation, but this means you will have to choose each spot carefully.
Other than this, and the obvious rules of courtesy, I should not need to make any more restrictions...any questions can be directed to me, I check this site 7-8 times a day (I really have no life. Haha) so I should be able to respond within a maximum of 24 hours.
So, for the first challange: INNISTRAD BLOCK!! This limits your card pool to Innistrad, Avacyn Restored, and Dark Ascention. Due to the nature of a fair game, I will only submit a deck if we end up with an odd number of submissions during a challenge. I promise to play all decks to the best, and fairest of my ability.
Disclaimer: I am not a professional, I will make mistakes, seeing as this is my first challenge...potentially a lot of them. Haha. I am ALWAYS open to ideas to make this challenge better, or more enjoyable. Feel free to hit up my profile and leave a comment for any questions.
Good luck in the challenge...and BEGIN!!

My contribution:
Scytec are we using the block constructed ban list? I'm going to have to make some edits if so.

Ok, it looks like TheFanatic and I both have to edit our decks, we have the same block constructed illegal cards. (Lingering Souls and Intangible Virtue )

Aw man! I didn't realize that Lingering Souls and Intangible Virtue were banned. I guess I'll have to go back to my old standby of vampires!

Yeah Lingering Souls and Intangible Virtue and nothing else is banned. I guess B/W tokens was too strong for the block meta. Hell my deck didn't even include any black cards, I just had a single swamp and some searches in case I could hit the flash back. Also i'm a bit bummed that the allied checks were M13 not Inistrad block so I don't get checks. I may end up doing another deck and submitting a change of entry so that I have some duals

@241543903 - The next Block is going to be Urza's Block because I promised fluffybunnypants I would. Haha. But after that it is my intention to open it up to a vote. :p

I am sooo gonna make something for this, but it might be a day or so. Deck challenges are fun! I don't really care about rewards, just want to see a deck I made duke it out with other submissions. :)

My last comment left it a little vague if I was going to rebuild and resubmit. I'm not going to, I playtested a few times and I don't seem to get color screwed so the check lands aren't as big of an issue as they could have been.

You have to find a challenge people are interested in doing. Innistrad was a popular block and such a limited card pool allows decks to be made quickly without too much work.
August 4, 2014 8:15 p.m.
Maybe, doinitwrong, but I am sure I will scare all of them to you with my first completion of a challenge. Haha.

doinitwrong is a fitting name then?
I'm just kidding, if it makes you feel any better I just now realized there is a forum for challenges... hope to do plenty more in the future!
August 5, 2014 9:09 a.m.
Hey, be nice. Without him this challenge wouldn't exist. He was invaluable help to me when I was getting started.
August 5, 2014 12:11 p.m.
LittleBlueHero says... #41
Lol I was just making the "user name is relevant" joke. I was more posting to say that I hope doinitwrong does more challenges now that I know there is a forum for them and where to look :)
August 5, 2014 12:45 p.m.
Yes, there still are not enough challenges going on. We need like 7-10 going on at once. Moar challenges! :)
On a slightly more serious note, I like that this challenge fills a different niche than doinitwrong's challenges. YODBC really covers a lot of uniquely created metas, while this 8-bit challenge is going straight for the block constructed. So I really hope that BOTH of these challenges continue on.
As for guesses about the number of submissions... The only reason I'm not in the most recent YODBC is due to bad timing on my part. Like LittleBlueHero, more users may have 'discovered' this forum since YODBC started (and likely in part -Because- of YODBC and the other challenges here). It could also be that more users have the courage to try a challenge in an established set block? That's my theory for now.

LittleBlueHero Ouch, I need some ointment for that burn lol.
I'm cool with the 8-bits being more popular than YODBC, and really I'd be surprised if they weren't. Everyone knows what Block constructed is but not many know what, say, Rainbow Stairwell format is. But yeah, the YODBCs are definitely going to continue (the next one will probably be up this weekend #shamelessplug) and I hope the 8-bit Challenges keep drawing in such large numbers.
August 5, 2014 2:53 p.m.
Gidgetimer says... #44
Sorry doinitwrong I thought YODBC was someone else.
I have seen them and have meant to enter a few, but alas I don't want to take too much time thinking about a deck I will never use. About half of my personal GW tokens deck is from Innistrad which is why I was able to throw one together without too much trouble. I just took out all of the things that weren't from Innistrad or are banned in block (RIP Birds of Paradise , Lingering Souls and 3 others) and added in cool token cards in those CMC.
August 5, 2014 3:31 p.m.
Alright, the submission phase is finally over!! we3 have a lot of powerful looking decks, and I can't wait to try them all out. :P I will post the bracket later today, and then begin testing tomorrow. Given the number of submissions, I am going to make this block a double elimination tournament bracket. Good luck everyone!!
August 6, 2014 12:38 p.m.
Gidgetimer says... #46
Cool, there is an even 16. I know this would be perfect for a single elimination bracket, not sure how a double elimination goes.
August 6, 2014 1:03 p.m.
There are 17 decks Gidgetimer, I believe you missed johnnytg's deck Rakdos Miracles because it was not in the large format. As such, I get to enter the competition as well. :p However I swear to you that I will playtest all challenges completely legitimately and to the best of my ability.

Because of the fact that we had 18 teams, two preliminary round were necessary. I rolled a die 20 for each deck and the four lowest decks were in the preliminary rounds. The results were as follows:
Game One: Dao comes out swinging, better board presence and faster building insured him the win.
Game Two: The opposite...Scytec trumped Dao with superior creatures, and faster drops.
Game Three: Dao appeared to be winning in the early game with a better board presence. But turn four Scytec dropped an Endless Ranks of the Dead that Dao just did not have an answer for.
Match One goes to Scytec 2-1.
Game One: 241543903 starts strong with numerous Soulbond creatures on the board...this coupled with Lifelink was just too much for spyroswiz to handle.
Game Two: spyroswiz dominates the field with two Restoration Angel s that 241543903 has absolutely no answers for...a swift defeat ensued.
Game Three: A turn four Riders of Gavony declared human ensured 241543903 a quick victory as spyroswiz couldn't get any of his angels before 241543903 chipped his life away.
Match Two goes to 241543903 2-1.
