Just Chatting II

The Blind Eternities forum

Honestly I got bored, so it's time for Just Chatting II.

A couple topics to start the discussion.

I recently finished Franz Kafka's - The Trial, and need a recommendation for a new book to read during this Quarantine period. Taking recommendations for books (Fiction / Non-fiction) in French, Ancient Greek, Latin, English, & Hebrew.

How is Quarantine three weeks in???? (At least it's three weeks in Minnesota)...

I’ve just read a book called “The Bees” by Laline Paull, I’d definitely recommend.

Quarantine in The North of England is pretty dull!

I wouldn't mind some book recommendations as well, trying to get through the books people consider "essential reading" (mostly fiction for me though). I am considered an essential worker, but I have a long bus ride in the evenings.

Right before quarantine, I bought a couple books by Chuck Palahniuk, and a copy of The Odyssey, which have both been great. I would check out Fight Club and Fight Club 2, whether or not you have seen the movie.

The Power Broker is a classic. Range by David Epstein is a personal favorite.

I recently read Kafka's Metamorphosis.

I only speak English, but I'd recommend, in no particular order:

  • Dune by Frank Herbert
  • Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card
  • The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien (and his entire mythology, since you seem to be a fan of language)
  • Italian Journey by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
  • Why America Needs Socialism by G.S. Griffin

My quarantine is consumed by school.

Though it doesn't have the original Greek side-by-side, as a classics major you should check out Emily Wilson's translation of The Odyssey. I happen to think it blows Fagles out of the water, but even if you don't she's an extremely thoughtful translator with a like 150+ page introduction & translator's note on her choices.

The Witcher books are pretty good. Great character buildup. Easy to follow yet complex storyline. Altho I gotta say, the military/political bits were kinda boring but were few and far between. I hope the show does the books (and the games) justice.

Brutal_B I've watched the first half of the pilot episode of Witcher and thought it was awful. It gets ok reviews elsewhere though, so you might still like it. On a related note, I feel like Netflix has ruined a lot of great show concepts recently.

I too have watched the show and it wasn't that bad. Don't be judging the books by the show. There's a reason they made games and now the show after the books...they're that good.

Brutal_B I thought you didn't watch the show (you wrote "I hope the show does the books justice" in your previous post). Also, I wasn't judging the books, I actually assumed that Netflix botched the execution and/or I'm losing interest in fantasy shows.

So what's the verdict? Did the show do the books justice?

Also, I really enjoyed the Bartimaeus Trilogy and the Edge Chronicles if you're looking for more fantasy YA books.

The first season did surprisingly well in it's interpretation of the book. When I posted the "I hope...", I was referring to future seasons. This first season is letting the viewers get acquainted with the characters, which is what the first book does. It'll be interesting to see the chemistry between the actors as their characters' storylines converge. I have faith in Henry Cavill. From what I've read he's a huge fan of both the books and games, so he's well acquainted with Geralt's personality and "behavior" if you will. IMHO I think the show will outrun Game of Thrones.

I wonder if Gwent and/or fisstech will make an appearance
