This year is the 20th anniversary of Heavy Meal 2000, an animated action film that is a loose sequel to/spinoff of the 1981 film Heavy Metal. The film follows its predecessor in that it holds back nothing in terms of content, with copious amounts of extreme violence and gratuitous nudity, but there is no strong story connection between the two films. The original film was an anthology film, comprised of numerous unrelated segments with no central story, but the sequel instead had a continuous central plot, which may or may not have been a good thing. The only strong connection to the previous film is that the green crystal that corrupted Tyler may be a piece of the Loc-Nar, the glowing orb that served as the main antagonist of the original film.

The film is a fairly typical action film, about a woman who seeks revenge after an evil warlord destroys her home village, and, while I did enjoy it, it simply did not live up to the legacy of the first film. The original Heavy Metal film was groundbreaking, but, by the time that Heavy Metal 2000 was released, 19 years later, there was little new ground to break. If the film studio had planned to make a sequel to the original, I feel that they should have made it much sooner, perhaps four or five years after the original. More years have now passed since the sequel was released than passed between the original and the sequel, and there is no indication that there shall ever be a third film, which I find to be very unfortunate. Also unfortunate is the fact that, while the original film has been released on blu-ray disc (and I own it), the sequel has not, because it at least would be very visually impressive on blu-ray.

What does everyone else say about this? What are your thoughts about this year being the 20th anniversary of Heavy Metal 2000?
