Comic Books. (DC or Marvel, NO HATE WARS)

So, I'm a huge comic book fan, love reading them, love the artwork (It's what drew me into magic)

And quite honestly I find comics hit the mark for me when it comes to my Fantasy/Sci Fi needs.

I'm thinking there MUST be some comic advocates on T/O here (I know there is a few already coughUrbanAnathema)

I figured i'd start up a little discussion on some favorite comics/writers/illustrators.

Sidenote: I just picked up DC's Absolute Identity Crisis, I've heard nothing but good things about this comic and Brad Meltzer hasn't disappointed me yet... And I got it 1/2 off! BONUS.

But I have to say, The comic that started it all for me (Which was recently unfortunately so I have a lot to catch up on) is DC's Final Crisis by Grant Morrison, the comic just blew me away with the writing and the intense theory behind his writing, the story of Superman and Ultraman was truly awesome spin on Supes and the actual story of Final Crisis is unreal, and the fact that it builds up into Blackest Night/Brightest Day I though was damn cool.

So c

I actually haven't stayed current in awhile. I was a DC guy as a kid, but read some Marvel and indie stuff in the 80s and 90s as a kid. Loved Spidey and Venom.

Matt Wagner's Grendel (Hunter Rose) is likely my favorite comic book character of all time. Loved the idea of basically an evil young Batman.

I don't read comics. I read what Wikipedia and their respective wikis say.

I think it's a bit weird that my favorite hero is Marvel (Spider-Man) but I prefer the DC heroes.

July 24, 2014 5:46 p.m.

Caligula says... #5

Haha! Grendel was pretty interesting although I never looked too much into him, I'll have to check it out.

Dissapointing! :P jk.

But seriously, If you were into DC check out Final Crisis, It seriously blew me away

I grew up on Batman (specifically the 1993 Batman: the Animated Series) so I've always liked DC, especially anything relevant to the Caped Crusader. Unfortunately, I've never read any of the comics but I read up on the storylines through Wikipedia and all the other wikis, much like GoldGhost012.

As far as Marvel, I've only seen the movies. Though I will say that, in my opinion, Spiderman 2 was the best superhero movie I've ever seen. And I've seen all of them since X-Men. The Dark Knight is a close second.

This is probably as good a place as any to bring this up: does anyone play the DC Comics Deck-Building Game?

July 24, 2014 6:08 p.m.

Caligula says... #7

Haha Fulcrum Batman is my probably my top 3 so I feel you on that.

They did a lot of wicked stuff with Bruce and the Cape JUST before DC rebooted with the new 52.

But check out some of the storyline between Time and the Batman, Batman: The Black Glove, and R.I.P Batman is damn awesome. My favorite Joker is in that little series (Rip Batman)

Never heard of the Deck Building game lol

Since I saw the first X-Men movie, I just knew I HAD to read the comics. And now I love them. Marvel. Mostly X-Men.

I have NEVER read a DC comic. I actually just don't know why.... Marvel was just so good, that I didn't needed DC ;)

But the X-Men stories are the best thing ever. They are really amazing. I recommend people to read them :D

July 24, 2014 6:17 p.m.

-Fulcrum says... #9

@Caligula: Thanks for the suggestions, I'll certainly look into those. The Deck Building is a lot of fun, easy to learn, and a lot cheaper than MtG. Best to play it with three people.

Out of all the animated films I've seen, Batman: Under the Red Hood was my favorite. Know where I can find a continuation of Jason's story?

I never really took a shine to comics. I liked Moore's Watchmen and V for Vendetta quite a bit, but don't know if those really count though. I think what irks me the most about comics is that they have this huge established universe with tons of characters. It creates this barrier of entry and limits authors tremendously. Why can't people just tell a story? Not only that, the community is really exclusive. I keep sensing this attitude that the more you know, the more cred you have. Casual readers just don't appreciate the nuances and they can't be bothered with until they complete an endless list of required reading. It's very similar to the attitude that plagues fighting games.

@NorthernRaven I've read a bunch of Marvel, Some good, some meh, The issue I have is they build up so much in the beginning of their series and it's all truly awesome, But I find alot of the outcomes dissapointing. (Ex. Schism, Magneto: Not a Hero)

But I still dig marvel, They have some gems like Siege, Secret Invasion, Thanos Imperative are all amazing.

@Fulcrum there's a few comics out now that exclusively follow Jason Todd actually! It's called Red Hood and the Outlaws, He's a little more Renegade hero in that which I can dig and the artwork is on point.

If your looking a little more evil jason todd you can check out the newish Batman & Robin, He makes a few appearances and it's actually a stellar comic series that introduces Bruce Waynes biological son (w/ Talia Al Guul) Damian Wayne, which is an awesome addition to the comic series right now.

@TheDoctor All Batman.

@TheDevicer You sir are looking for Graphic Novels!

Love them too, Fortunately if you're looking for something with some substance one of my favorite series of all time is the Transmetropolitan. It's a really politically driven comic book that really speaks volumes about society today, Truly awesome and honestly so hilarious, I found myself laughing out loud several times reading the books.

And then there's another series called Locke and Key which was actually written by Stephen King's son Joe Hill (He changed his last name so he wouldn't be making money off his dad's name, He wants his own recognition so I can respect that) and Honestly it's one of the most well written series i've read lately, it's really all your looking for in a story, and it's damn impressive.

July 24, 2014 7:11 p.m.

Caligula says... #13

@TheDevicer I cannot forget to mention Planetary which it another REAAAAALLLLYYY good series. I actually highly recommend checking that one out if you have time.

July 24, 2014 7:14 p.m.

Caligula says... #14

@TheDevicer and I can totally agree with you on that aspect, I don't goto comicons or anything like that. I solely buy comics for my satisfaction, I find if you find a writer you like and branch out from there you cannot go wrong.

July 24, 2014 7:17 p.m.

UrbanAnathema says... #15

I've read Final Crisis. Have you read Crisis on Infinite Earths? If you liked Final Crisis you will love that. It's an amazing story and set the standard. I really stopped reading around New 52.

July 24, 2014 9:59 p.m.

UrbanAnathema says... #16

Also my father was/is a huge GL fan. So I read all of GL from the Neil Adams Dennis O'Neil run all the way to Rebirth.

July 24, 2014 10:03 p.m.

UrbanAnathema says... #17

Also read Kingdom Come. Likely the best art/story combo DC ever put together. I'm actually very surprised it hasn't been turned into an Animated film yet.

July 24, 2014 10:04 p.m.

Caligula says... #18

Hahah UrbanAnathema Yup, yup and yup!

I've read Infinite Crisis and Kingdom Come, Both were damn awesome.

Rebirth was suprisingly good as well. Did you get into Blackest Night?

July 24, 2014 10:09 p.m.

UrbanAnathema says... #19

I did. The multiple Corps and the emotional spectrum seemed to drag on. My father was actually a foundibg member of H.E.A.T. Which was one of the first Internet organized fan movement in comics. They ended up taking out an ad in Wizard magazine to protest the ruining of Hal Jordan during the 90s when they made him Parallax. Like he was pretty serious. Lol.

July 24, 2014 10:13 p.m.

GoldGhost012 says... #20

Dude, I am all over that emotional spectrum. Like I really want to be a Red Lantern. But not really the complete comic RL, but kinda a mix between comic RL and Green Lantern the Animated Series RL.

July 24, 2014 10:20 p.m.

Caligula says... #21

Hahahah! That's intense, pretty funny though.

Hal Jordan is pretty badass, It's actually so funny how much he rips on Batman in the new 52.

Lately i've steered away into some of the darker comics out there lol, I don't know why I was just intrigued by Crossed and Avatar comics, They have some gems that are just too good (Supergod, Caligula (Hue hue hue), and Johnathan Hickman just put out God is Dead through Avatar that is really damn cool.

Zeus and the Pantheon vs Odin and Valhalla, Yes please.

July 24, 2014 10:23 p.m.

Caligula says... #22

Although I was just so amped that they brought back Swampthing and Animal Man, Seriously if you wanna look into the new 52 you HAVE to check those two storylines out.

And Batman The Court of the Owls is one of my favorite Batman comics.

July 24, 2014 10:26 p.m.

UrbanAnathema says... #23

Yeah. I don't hate the concept persay. I just think it's kind of gimmicky and lazy. Too much of a good thing. Like when Marvel had 9000 symbiote. .. You know kinda like now again lol.

July 24, 2014 10:28 p.m.

UrbanAnathema says... #24

I love Batman. I'll give New 52 a chance one of these days. :)

July 24, 2014 10:29 p.m.

Caligula says... #25

Also! If you haven't checked out what happened to Batman after Final Crisis I highly recommend checking out Time and the Batman, Damn cool concept haha

UrbanAnathema says... #26

I kept up some with JLA and Death of the Family. Not in love with what they have done to Dick lately...

July 24, 2014 10:34 p.m.

UrbanAnathema says... #27

Jason Todd was a bad idea in the 80s but he was a great red herring in Hush and then they really brought him back and kind of made him "Dark Nightwing"... And Damian was "Dark Robin" it just seemed to be done for the sake of doing it.

July 24, 2014 10:36 p.m.

GoldGhost012 says... #28

I liked Dick as Batman. Kinda mad they de-evolved him back into Nightwing after his epic fight with Red Hood for the mantle.

July 24, 2014 10:37 p.m.

UrbanAnathema says... #29

I actually like Dick as Batman. He brings a different approach. I just like the character of Dick Grayson in general and I think the current regime at DC has underutilized him and kind of screwed him up in the name of gimmicky stuff like bringing back Jason Todd and Damian.

July 24, 2014 10:41 p.m.

GoldGhost012 says... #30

Did the New 52 bring back Wally West yet? If not, I hate them for not bringing him back after his death in Young Justice.

July 24, 2014 10:45 p.m.

UrbanAnathema says... #31

Grayson is Batman without the issues and the rage. He gets to benefit from having the father figure even one as screwed up as Bruce. He's got his own triumphs and failures outside of being Batman's sidekick with the Titans. He just has a depth that gets kind of screwed and underutilized in the name of new characters or bringing back old ones from the grave. Jason Todd as an ill conceived Robin who died because Bruce is a little fucking nuts and resented Dick leaving him and stop being Robin was a far more interesting wrinkle to Dick'a relationship with Bruce than bringing JT back so they could "fight over the mantle" ever did for me.

July 24, 2014 10:48 p.m.

UrbanAnathema says... #32

Young Justice was really well done. Cartoon Network gave it a raw deal.

July 24, 2014 10:49 p.m.

GoldGhost012 says... #33

So much time and effort put into a show that was doomed just after the beginning of the second season that had to end giving us a teaser of frickin' Darkseid. Darkseid! I still haven't forgiven CN.

July 24, 2014 10:53 p.m.

Caligula says... #34

I agree with both of you totally, Dick Grayson was extremely likeable in the comics. Although It didn't sit right with me, the inevitable fact that Bruce Wayne would return made it okay for me haha.

Have you guys checked out Flashpoint?

The Batman comic seriously had me tearing up at the end hahah the feels when Bruce get's the letter from his father, F yah Barry way to be the man.

July 24, 2014 11:01 p.m.

GoldGhost012 says... #35

I've watched the Flashpoint DC Animated Movie. Does that count?

July 24, 2014 11:03 p.m.

Caligula says... #36

Hahaha, Yeah that counts lol, I watched it and actually found it did the comics some justice.

Although the comics are obviously way better on the details :P

July 24, 2014 11:06 p.m.

GoldGhost012 says... #37

Clearly. There was something about the movie left out that pissed me off, but I can't remember what it is.

I also have Justice League: War on DVD. Even though it kinda is basically just battle porn and Darkseid being an intergalactic conqueror, I like it. Probably because of the battle porn, haha.

July 24, 2014 11:12 p.m.

Caligula says... #38

Hahaha, Yeah theres the flashpoint comic itself and then there is 1 off series about Thomas Wayne, and all the characters in Flashpoint, Like Abin Sur is still the GL, Aquaman and Wonder Woman have their own comic series and it's all inside Flashpoint so it gives alot more in that universe which is pretty cool.

July 24, 2014 11:14 p.m.

GoldGhost012 says... #39

So I've been reading the synopses for the new story Future's End... Never before have I wished for the actual comics more than now. I blame my friend for giving me the #0 Edition and getting me interested.

July 24, 2014 11:48 p.m.

Caligula says... #40

Haha nice! Hang onto those because they could turn up a profit. No jokes, I got a free comic day walking dead comic. Used it as a coaster and about a month down the road I went into a comic shop and see the exact same thing hung up on the wall for fifty bones. I was instantly just like. Fml.

That's cool I'll have to look into that though. Been outta the DC loop for a bit checking out some one off comics that are just incredible.

July 24, 2014 11:52 p.m.

UrbanAnathema says... #41

Check out the 1st Batman vs Grendel... You'll like it a lot.

July 25, 2014 8:55 a.m.

Caligula says... #42

I definitely will, Have you guys ever heard of "The Boys" ?

If you want a more mature comic with some awesome comedy check it out. It's just a great take on superhero power abuse :P

I'll check it out!
