Captain America (1990)

Back in 1990, Marvel produced a Captain America film, at which point in time, Marvel was a fairly underground company, nowhere near the giants whom they are, today. The film was never given a theatrical release, but was released on home video in 1992, although that home video release is now out-of-print.

Having already seen the 1994 Fantastic Four film, I decided to watch this movie, to see how it compares to the other, better-known superhero films of that era. The film was definitely corny and campy, but I still enjoyed it, because it was a fun and exciting adventure.

One significant change from the normal story is that Red Skull was Italian, not German, a change that I feel makes no sense, but it was quite cool to see him looking and acting like a mafia don throughout most of the film. I see that Captain America: The First Avenger was not the first film to have Red Skull derive his appearance from an earlier and flawed version of the serum that was later used on Steve, that Steve was given the serum in a secret underground location, that the procedure caused a temporary power outage, that a Nazi/Hydra agent killed the doctor who developed the formula, and that the doctor did not record any of their research. Did those elements originate from the comics, or did the later film imitate this film?

Obviously, the special effects in this film were very primitive by today’s standards, but the technology simply was not as advanced as it is, now.

This film was intended to compete with the 1989 Batman film, since, at that time, DC was in a dominant position regarding films, so it is amazing at how the situation has changed, since then. It is available for viewing on YouTube, for everyone's enjoyment.

Has anyone else here seen this film? What are your thoughts about it?

Ah, is this the one where the Cap steals people’s cars by pretending to be sick? That movie is one of the schlockiest things I’ve ever seen and I love it. I remember back in my junior year howl-laughing with my friends as we watched this movie. Highly recommended.

From what I understand of Captain America's origin this is mostly how it happened. This basic version has been retold enough that it is at the least the official version (they also went over this origin story in the 1990's Spiderman cartoon).
