After a lengthy plebiscite Australians have overwhelmingly voted YES, in support of marriage equality.

Specifically 61.6% of people voted YES, and 38.4% of people voted no.

Impressively, 79.5% of eligible voters voted, and the plebiscite wasn't mandatory.

So there you have it. We finally caught up to the rest of the world.

Rabid_Wombat no, they won't.

Pets and children can't give consent to marry. That is part of the wedding vows, and what makes them legally binding.

That's why it is a requirement to say or repeat vows, and finish with "I do", or the equivalent.

There is also a requirement that people be of an age where they are properly able to give consent. A marriage license won't be issued to any couple where one of the members isn't of that age.

It is different for different countries, but for most it is around age 18. I don't call an 18 year old a child.

So, unless you are talking about countries where child marriage is ALREADY legal (an abhorrent practice), then you don't understand how marriage equality works.

Argy True dat but there used to be a requirement that only a man and a woman could lawfully marry.

As we have seen this week Laws can easily be changed...which could place children or even wombats at risk.

No, laws AREN'T "easily changed".

Not only have we just undergone a plebiscite that took three months, now parliament has to actually vote on legislation to change the Marriage Act.

The act has to receive a majority vote in two different houses of parliament, which can mean days of deliberation as the finer points are worked out.

Each democracy has a system of checks and balances.

Not only would approving marriage for pets and children be very unpopular, and not supported by politicians for fear of losing votes, it would be loudly protested by the likes of PETA, and Save the Children Foundation. And basically the majority of people in this country.

Not only that, the age of marriage has already gone through policitical processes which RAISED the eligible age.

In a democracy, children and wombats need not feel at risk of facing marriage. They just aren't.

Suggesting they are is ill-founded scare mongering, and was a tactic used by the "no" vote in this country. Most intelligent people were able to see what a poor argument it was.

In all countries that have approved marriage rights for all sexual orientations, not ONE has pushed for the laws to be extended to include pets and children.

It's nonsensical.

Rabid_Wombat I'm sorry but that is a poorly made argument, marriage should be between consenting adults who love each other, animals and children cannot give consent. If two men or women want to marry, let them.

The argument Rabid Wombat is a "Slippery Slope" argument.

Unfortunately for Wombat, "Slippery Slope" is also a logical fallacy.

Asserting that allowing gay marriage will to child marriage, which will lead to bestiality, etc etc, is simple ridiculous. Laughable even. There is simply no evidence or reason for any of that to ever happen.

People who want to be married to someone of their own sex want to do so because they are gay/lesbian and they LOVE THE OTHER PERSON.

People who want to merry children or animals what to do so because they are perverted. Big difference.
