The entire deck was originally built around Axis of Mortality and effects that keep you from dying even at zero or less than zero health. Phyrexian Unlife, Gideon, Platinum Angel and other such effects are meant to be brought out as soon as possible, and then following up with Necropotence, Ad Nauseam, etc. to drain your own life total, and finally following up with Magus of the Mirror, Axis of Mortality, Repay in Kind, etc. to 'win by not losing.'
