continued playtesting & changes —Sept. 11, 2019

got some good data from an 18 hour sleepless MTG session last night

to be added:

  • Tribute Mage + Swiftfoot Boots + Lightning Greaves // lack of haste lead me to losing out on multiple winning opportunities. unsure if i'm going to replace Hall of the Bandit Lord as i already have a large base of colorless, and with its main purpose being giving Zur the Enchanter haste, i'm unsure if it's all that useful.
  • changeling spells: Nameless Inversion + Crib Swap // these are playable with rebels. pretty damn good searchable removal. likely going to remove Tragic Slip for this, though i may look into the removal of a counterspell instead. i'm finding myself with 1-2 too many in hand most of the time.
  • Brainstorm // rebels can't find cards in the hand, and this is a good card regardless.
  • Loyal Retainers // i run plenty of readily available sac outlets, so i'm not too afraid of my creatures falling into the grave. this creature is easily tutorable by any rebel, and their effect is unaffected by summoning sickness, unlike Apprentice Necromancer
  • Reflector Mage // tutorable removal. good in general, even when not summoned.
  • Cadaver Imp // unsure about this one -- it's recursion, yeah. goes back to the hand so it's mildly costly, and also has a hefty cost. i'm likely sticking with retainers for now...
  • orzhov signet/similar artifacts to help with ramp. i consistently find myself unable to find black in the current build, with my only option being a lucky Vesuva on an opponent's swamp. considering Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth if my budget can handle it.

to be removed:

  • Drogskol Captain // simply going too hard on protection here. Kira, Great Glass-Spinner does their job but better, and there's also Etchings of the Chosen
  • 1/2 counterspells, most notably Rewind. as tempting as it is to untap some of my bigger aggressive lands, i feel like this card simply isn't effective outside of a vacuum. i'm seldom left with enough mana to cast it, and i don't have the ability to follow up on anything with the newly accessible mana. during one of my games last night, a board wipe was played, and i was 1 mana short to cast this. would have saved my ass hard, but after the wipe went off, i pretty much had lost everything due to my lack of grave recursion.
  • Remote Farm // early game white mana did not end up being a problem for me in the slightest, since most rebels only require 1. in stark contrast, Saprazzan Skerry paid for some extremely crucial spells, and people have a tendency to sleep on it if i ever leave it untapped. i'd add another if i could.
  • Fact or Fiction // deck is too jank for this, and doesn't have much graveyard recursion outside of sivvi herself. in addition, draws aren't hard to come by thanks to Zur.

i'll be playtesting the changes once i don't feel half asleep.

changes are live. added Kozilek, Butcher of Truth after realizing Loyal Retainers was $50... getting harder and harder to stay within a budget, might change some lands around.
