Zirilan the Dragon Toolbox - 75%er EDH

Commander / EDH Dragons Mono-Red

Last updated for Commander 2020 and Ikoria.

Theme of the Deck: use Zirilan's ability to find silver-bullet dragons to interfere with other players gameplans, while using various synergy effects to build an overwhelming board presence.

How to play it: Ramp into Zirilan as fast as possible. The first dragon fetched up is often Thunder Dragon to clean up the board, or Dragon Mage for a fresh hand. There's a lot of ways to interact with the board using our "toolbox" of dragons.

Ideally, dragons can be saved at end of turn with Sundial of the Infinite or Conjurer's Closet. Slightly less ideally, save them up under Safe Haven, Endless Sands, Synod Sanctum or Cold Storage to be used later.

After stunting the growth of opposing board states, we eventually go for the kill with a big pump effect from Moonveil Dragon to buff the team, or Dragon Tyrant with a lot of mana to K.O. someone all at once.

Why Snow Mountains?

Combos:

Zirilan into Apocalypse + Worldgorger Dragon . Hold priority after casting Apocalypse, and tutor up Worldgorger to exile everyone elses stuff and keep your own. If you expect a Cyclonic Rift or other sweeper, tutoring up Worldgorger in response is a very neat answer.

Illusionist's Bracers + Zirilan of the Claw into Scourge of the Throne + Terror of Mount Velus is 40+ damage out of nowhere for an instant KO.

Notable Exclusions:

  • Blood Moon and Ruination: add them to the deck if you feel like being mean.

  • Mycosynth Lattice for combo with Hellkite Tyrant or Vandalblast (currently excluded from the build as it's too expensive/situational, and there's no reliable way to tutor for it.)

  • A lot of effects such as Tel-Jilad Stylus which allow re-using dragons. My experience has been that you don't get to activate Zirilan enough times to make this worthwhile, and there's enough redundancy / copying of dragon effects to make this unnecessary. Including too many of these cards, such as Rishadan Pawnshop or Erratic Portal I think can easily turn into a trap making you far too reliant on the commander.
