Hello all and welcome to my deck that punishes you for everything you can do in Magic! lefty117 is the one who came up with the idea even though lefty117 wanted it for a different deck of mine: Horror, Carnage, and Annihilation. All are Rakdos., and Rant followed through with the idea of punishment. I didn't like it for my Rakdos deck, but the thought and theme just stuck with me. In talking with some friends Grixis came up as the possible colors for the deck. As I haven't made a deck in those colors yet I became intrigued. With the theme and colors picked out, it was time to nurture the seed that was planted in my mind.

I didn't realize how hard it would be to make this deck. Hours spent searching for cards, talking to friends for suggestions, and others believing the trail I was on wouldn't work. I do believe I have the deck in a fun, playable place at the moment, but it definitely needs tweaking and playtesting. I am welcomed to any and all criticisms and suggestions for the deck. Of course, I would prefer suggestions of what to take out for cards that are suggested, and possibly why it is better. Thanks for taking the time to look at it!

I do want to mention this because I know there is going to be a smart ass somewhere who tries to make fun of me for it. I completely understand that this deck COMMITS the sins it is trying to punish. This is a theme that I thought was cool, and all the sins I've categorized for magic, EVERY deck does in some way, shape, or form. This is no exception.

Why Crosis, The Purger?

So Crosis, the Purger is actually not the first one chosen for this deck. I originally started with Marchesa, the Black Rose because I badly want to make a deck with her. However, after finalizing the deck there were only six creatures. I don't really need a commander that benefits creatures when I don't play that many. Crosis, the Purger was recommended by TheRedGoat first, (and then commonly agreed upon by everyone else) because he can still be part of the theme of the deck. His ability can punish those who are greedy with huge hands, and those that continuously tutor (lust). He is powerful in himself, and helps with the theme! I am very appreciative my friends recommended him.

Why Grixis?

Grixis was the first set of colors that just made sense for this theme. I considered Jund, but green is more about life and generosity that I felt I would run into more problems. Grixis colors gives me so many options to go for this theme, and it did get to the point where I had to narrow so many good cards down to fit the deck. Black for your general tutors and omnipotence, Blue for counters (see Envy), and red for punishment in the form of damage. Everything seemed to just fall into place the more I thought about it.

Why Punish the Seven Deadly Sins?

When this idea came to be, it was for a different one of my punishment decks Horror, Carnage, and Annihilation. All are Rakdos. which is just a hate deck with Rakdos the Defiler at the helm to truly finish the game without my opponent having any hope. Rant gave the idea for punishing the sins as it seemed to be something different. Apparently he couldn't shake the idea of the deck being pretty cool and with potential. The other option that was brought up was enforcing the seven deadly sins, but that just doesn't have the same ring. Plus, it isn't my style.

Punishing the Seven Deadly Sins feels like a more fun way to go. Some I can choose to give light punishments, or harsher ones for those that tend to continuously sin in a way that the board hates. I wanted this deck to be able to play in as many environments as possible, AND HOLD ITS OWN. That is something that will continuously evolve as I playtest, plus suggestions from who(m)ever decides to leave one.

TheRedGoat helped me categorize and better described some of the sins I was having trouble with. I greatly appreciate his help as he got me though being stuck.

ComboCrazy is one that loves combos (could you guess?) This guy helps me with almost all decks I build and this one is no exception.

Redjokr another friend that helps me with any and all decks. He is more of a budget player, which gives me amazing insight on cards that I didn't even realize is out there (as I play competitive modern). He is able to give me a balance on my EDH decks to keep them at a fun and playable level for my playgroup.

Lilbrudder is the opposite of Redjokr. He plays some serious competitive EDH and I have two EDH decks that were greatly inspired because of him. With both of these guys I get a solid spectrum on all the possibilities of cards for my deck.

Rant This is the guy for the idea of PUNISHING the Seven Deadly Sins. I hadn't met this guy for very long and he was willing to make a quick list of cards he liked for this theme. He gave me some great ideas for this version. He believed this idea had some solid potential, and he was willing to keep me going with all of the questions I sent his way.

Lust

I am categorizing lust for the desire of a certain card(s). Most people have some sort of tutors in their decks, or cards that help them draw way more than other players, to make sure they get the consistency they want. These cards are their punishment. All of sudden entire decks fall apart when I take out that one card they want to combo with, or stop them from searching all together. They look at me with disgust, I smile back.

Bribery - Oh you have that one creature that is game winning? You've been bragging that as soon as you draw into it the game is over? We've played before and I got stomped into the ground with Craterhoof Behemoth? (I may have gone personal there). Well...not today.

Grinning Totem - I get to take your favorite card AND cast if I want? I'm upset I didn't know about this earlier.

Life's Finale - While a board wipe yes, I can target ANY player for the exile effect. This card is a double whammy and almost in auto-include in any black deck I own. There goes combo one, two...and three.

Lost Legacy - Naming the card makes this one better for a playgroup that I know what is in each deck, or that I've already searched with other cards.

Ob Nixilis, Unshackled - Hope that one card in your deck is worth losing ten life. I've seen decks at standstills because no one could get rid of it, and no one wanted to search to do it haha.

Praetor's Grasp - The entire reason this theme came to be for Lust.

Slaughter Games - Again another name, but not being able to be countered makes this card an amazing beauty.

Stranglehold - I have been debating on this one. This card doesn't actually punish, more just stops my opponents. While that in itself could be considered a punishment (their cards become dead cards in their hand), I'm still debating if this stays on flavor.

Gluttony

Entire decks are made to just overindulge in something. Drawing their entire decks to win with Laboratory Maniac, infinite tokens to swing in for the win, ect. These cards are their to punish for those players that literately have only ONE playstyle. Don't get me wrong, I have decks like that too, but those kinds are decks are so easy to single out.

Cyclonic Rift - Staple in blue decks. I can play this at an endstep to make an opponent discard half of their stuff on the board. This seems like a great punishment for those decks that play half their deck incredibly quickly and look at you saying, "Come at me, bro." Well...since you asked.

Damnation - Amazing board wipe for Black. Too many creatures? Not anymore.

Fate Unraveler - Don't you just hate those decks that draw 5 times a turn? then 5 times on your turn?

Life's Finale - Again, a board wipe that can single out anyone else to stop what their doing. Love it.

Nicol Bolas, Planeswalker - Everything about this card is great for this theme. Too many noncreature permanents? I can deal with that. Too many creatures? Let me take some. You are an idiot and let me ultimate him? HAHA

Painful Quandary - This is here because storms decks are something in my meta, plus I like the thought that you don't get to have your cake and eat it too. You get to just cast that spell? Like, by only paying mana? No.

Rakdos Charm - Look at those infinite tokens swinging at me... Or that person who played their entire deck and left that trigger from Craterhoof Behemoth resolve LAST. Damn, I really need to stop doing that.

Underworld Dreams - Oh I see you have Phyrexian Arena and Alhammeret's Archive on your side of the field.

Vandalblast - This is here for my meta and how many artifacts are in it. Overindulgence in artifacts is ABSOLUTELY something that needs to be punished. I do play some, but not enough to be hated for it. (wink wink)

Tainted Remedy - Definitely an auto-include here. The them of overindulging in life to give yourself some sort of cushion, now your punishment is losing it. Watching yourself wither away.

Greed

I went with the theme of "greedy manabases" and the fact that graveyard decks essentially have TWO libraries. That is seriously greedy. Most of us lose our cards when we play them, and only get to play them once. I need to make sure the playing field is even.

Anathemancer - Love this guy. Can target SO many decks.

Blood Moon - I sort of feel bad about this in EDH, then again, it is legal.

Burning Earth - Punishment for those greedy manabases.

Price of Progress - So much better late game, but if they get rid of Blood Moon they'll feel safe. I can't have all of that going on.

Grafdigger's Cage - The answer is...no.

Leyline of the Void - Aw, you actually thought you would get to reuse that card in your graveyard?

Rakdos Charm - Instant speed graveyard removal. Go ahead and play that Patriarch's Bidding.

Relic of Progenitus - Cantrip, and can make sure graveyards stay relatively clear if I get it in the beginning.

Sloth

Is it me or do you hate playing control decks in EDH? And I mean those mono-blue decks, or blue white decks, that have like 20+ counters in there? These cards are to punish them for waiting for things to be played on someone else's turn. This generally had the theme of punishing control decks, however, it can and does apply to others.

Citadel of Pain - take the damage or tap your lands and stay doing nothing. This can't stay on the field very long for those kinds of decks.

Curse of Echoes - I like this because if it resolves and I target that control player, everyone get's their counterspell. Now we all choose what happens. I see this being very political.

Defense Grid - Look at the five mana Counterspell.

Price of Glory - Control decks HATE this card. Give me my spell or lose those lands.

Stoneshaker Shaman - Eventually they'll get rid of this, or they won't be able to play anything.

Tectonic Instability - Great for control decks. stop playing lands, or allow everyone to play for a turn.

Teferi, Mage of Zhalfir - Everything of yours is now sorcery speed. Sucks for you.

War's Toll - My playgroup HATES this card and it makes me love it that much more. All in or nothing.

Wrath

I actually had a little trouble this theme. Was punishing wrath meaning that I was destructive against them? Punishing them for doing something in general? Based on the cards I found I am going the route of punishing them more for attacking. Unfortunately most of the cards are only if they attack me, it was hard to find something global. Plus, targeted removal is the punishment of losing that one good creature since you decided to attack.

Devour in Shadow - Instant speed two mana removal. Little bit of a draw back, but good enough.

Exquisite Blood - The punishment here is that they'll have to do more to kill me (assuming they're not attacking me). Any kind of wrath to others gives me more life to continue that hate that is this deck.

Hissing Miasma - Unless you're lifegain, one life per creature begins to seriously add up.

Kazuul, Tyrant of the Cliffs - I'll let you attack, oh you don't have three mana? Free blocker.

Malicious Affliction - The nonblack creature restriction has made me upset with this card in the past, but it is still totally worth putting in. Two creatures for two mana? Yes.

No Mercy - Everything I wanted for this theme. If only there was a way to make this global.

Terminate Perfect targeted removal.

Envy

I was seriously struggling with this theme. Delving into the origins of this and why it became a cardinal sin, I read that what separated this from jealousy was the want to bring someone else down. Not only did you want what they had, but you wanted to take it and more from them. You wanted them to see you with that thing you wanted, while you brought them to be lower than what you already were. After this the light bulb turned on. I get to punish people who try to stop others. This can be hugely political, but I needed to stop those who wanted to bring everyone at the table down to put themselves on a pedestal. Well, there's an easy enough way for that.

Arcane Denial - Generally the two cards they draw aren't better than the spell I'm stopping.

Counterspell - Perfect counterspell.

Force of Will - Oh you thought I was tapped out?

Negate - I don't have a removal spell so let's stop that now.

Pact of Negation - Back up counterspell for the first one. MWAHAHA

Stubborn Denial - possible one mana Negate?

Swan Song - God what a great counterspell for other counterspells.

Pride

For those people that like to just stand above the rest. The ones that have a bit more money and have better decks. The people who trash talk the entire game, or get that great hand and just start off strong.

Curse of Bloodletting - Let's all just target you and get you out of here early.

Head Games - Now your hand is shit like the rest of us. I seriously don't understand why this isn't worth more money.

Mindslaver - I did include the lock here, but that's mainly for one v one when it gets there. This is to control that one player and bring him down to our level.

Sorin Markov - Now you're down to 10 life. No seriously you are. You pissed me off too many times.

Soul Conduit - Why are you badgering him? He hasn't even attacked you this game. Fine, let's even those odds.

Time Stop - Final stop. For those combo decks, storm decks, infinite whatever decks. Let's just stop all that right now.

Nicol Bolas, God-Pharaoh - The plus 2 here can start to severely hinder someone who is on top. All lands get exiled, AND I get to cast the nonland card that gets revealed. I get to take that card away from my opponent and use it against them if necessary. ALso, this is grixis. Nicol Bolas needs to be in here.

Notable Exclusions

This will obviously get bigger as time goes by, but for now let's go with this one.

I will NOT play Nekusar, the Mindrazer. Not only is not fun to play against, he isn't fun to play with (for me). He is also extremely linear in what he does and why he is good. Granted, this deck isn't made to be competitive, but I don't want him.

Sanguine Bond - For those that aren't sure why this card is even being considered, look at it and Exquisite Blood. This creates an infinite combo that is just too easy to pull off. I don't play this combo in any deck.
