"You know, one good thing about the Blight is how it brings people together."

  • Alistair, Dragon Age: Origins

Yawgmoth, Thran Physician is no doubt one of the best sac outlets ever printed. His first ability not only gives you a card for a small price of 1 life and sacrificing another creature but you also get to throw another creature a -1/-1 counter that can weaken or kill it. His second ability, proliferate, is not used so much by this deck but under the right circumstances it can also be really strong.

Aim of this deck is to control the board by summoning Yawgmoth and deal out -1/-1 counters to creatures your opponents control by sacrificing your fodder creatures (Endrek Sahr, Master Breeder is INSANE value with Yawgmoth and Nest of Scarabs is almost broken with him). You can either keep opponents' creatures off the board and run through with your creatures, or you can drain them off their life by comboing undying creatures with Yawgmoth's -1/-1 counters and creatures like Vindictive Vampire or Zulaport Cutthroat. Another funny way to win is to play Ichor Rats and start proliferating the counters opponents get.

Weaknesses of this deck are that it's not high on recursion or non-creature removal. Usually I've not had need for them when I keep sacking creatures and drawing cards, the -1/-1 counters have turned out to be quite effective way to control the board.

Also I am on purpose not playing many tutor effects in this deck 'coss otherwise winning would feel too easy if I could always search for the combo pieces. It would also make the matches feel too same. By excluding cards like Demonic Tutor, Diabolic Tutor, Diabolic Intent, Vampiric Tutor I make room for other cards I would not normally play in my decks and it makes this deck feel different from my other decks that have black mana in them.

This deck originally was supposed to focus around the wither mechanic but much of the time that did not do anything since I ended up not attacking much with my creatures. I could return to it by rebuilding some parts of the deck differently or if it gets more support in the future.

Foreboding Fruit is in the deck just as an inside joke, you can replace it with any better card draw spell or some other sorcery.

Neat tricks you can do with this deck:

  • Nest of Scarabs comboes brokenly with Yawgmoth, with both on the field you can keep on drawing cards as long as you have targets for the -1/-1 counters or you have enough life. It also comboes incredibly with Archfiend of Ifnir, Midnight Banshee or Black Sun's Zenith.
  • With Horobi, Death's Wail on the battlefield, every -1/-1 counter from Yawgmoth or Blowfly Infestation turns in to a deadly force.
  • Scheming Symmetry was supposed to be watered down version of Imperial Seal but with this deck you can be sure of that you get to draw and maybe play that card before your opponent gets to draw their top card.
  • If you have your board filled with creatures, you can sack them all to draw your hand full of cards with Yawgmoth, then play Awaken the Erstwhile to discard them all to generate zombie token army and deny resources from your opponents while you can sack those creatures to fill your hand again (or block/attack).
  • Tainted Strike is a cool combat trick that often kills one player but you can also use it to kill all your opponents if you target Syr Konrad, the Grim or Vindictive Vampire with it and then sacrifice 10 other creatures!
  • Pitiless Plunderer combined with Endrek Sahr, Master Breeder allows you to almost play all your creature spells or draw almost your whole deck when they are on the field together with Yawgmoth.
