Wither Away - Hapatra-EDH

I have been waiting for Hour of Devastation to come out to build this. I'm sure we all knew to expect some pretty awesome -1 counter utility in this latest xpac. Though I actually built this deck when I got sidetracked while fixing my Meren deck.

The main idea of this deck is mayhem through mass application of -1/-1 counters and generation of a zerg army, with secondary focus on feeding/force feeding its destructive sac engine.

Win by infinite combo is frowned up in our meta and we do try to avoid them where it's possible, while maintaining value in our decks. There are a couple infinite combos in this deck and I hesitate to remove any more of them than I already have for fear of neutering the deck. So for my uses there are 3 main infinite combos in this deck.
  • Note: Adding Mikaeus, the Unhallowed increases the synergies and the inifinte combos, so I have side-boarded him for now to keep them down.

Combos

  1. Blowfly Infestation + Hapatra, Vizier of Poisons creates infinite ETB tokens, infinite counter placement, and infinite death triggers (as long as you already have 2 snakes). Also if this combo is in motion, Nest of Scarabs can be used to create infinite creatures and Blood Artist and/or Obelisk Spider can be used to give infinite life loss.
  2. Devoted Druid + Quillspike creates infinite +3/+3 power ups on Quillspike. If Hapatra, Vizier of Poisons, Nest of Scarabs or Flourishing Defenses are also out, it also creates an infinite number of snakes, insects or elf warriors. If Ivy Lane Denizen also happens to be out with Hapatra, Vizier of Poisons or Flourishing Defenses, it creates infinite +1/+1 counters.
  3. Devoted Druid + Hapatra, Vizier of Poisons + Ivy Lane Denizen generates infinite green mana and creates infinite snakes.

Updates: after some thorough play testing, this deck needs to draw land and ramp more reliably. It does well, assuming I get a good hand, but I find myself taking too many mulligans. There are also too many high-drop cards, that if I have a good hand, I never get the chance to use because I either combo out or destroy my adversary in the early-mid game. This deck performs poorly in a duel mid-late game and struggles to keep up in mid-late multiplayer games unless someone else has made themselves a severe target; it lacks the late game energy of other black/green decks (like Meren). High drop cards can be dropped in favor of more land fetch, ramp and card fetch to get this deck under a 3.0 mana curve. This deck can destroy early on, and has proven to be a better duel deck than I had thought, but I want to make it more consistent and more viable in multiplayer. Also need more non-creature removal, specifically artifacts and enchantments.

  • I would like this deck to come out pretty quick, so I'm hoping I've included enough ramp.

  • I currently have Yahenni, Undying Partisan and Whispersilk Cloak in because I have hopes for the two of them, but I'm not sure if their use might be so specific that better value might be found elsewhere (might be a one trick pony). Would likely replace with Pernicious Deed.

Note: Yahenni, Undying Partisan has a useful and fun win-con on a few occasions, though I'm still not sure if he can't be replaced with something that gives more value, so he stays for now. Whispersilk Cloak has proven invaluable.

Any thoughts or advice are most welcome!

Like any casual deck, the environment of play will best test the deck's effectiveness. So this deck will change as new trends emerge in our group, but for now this is the environment.

Gearing it for my meta means it should run lighter on the stax (which can frustrate players in our group, still want everyone to have fun), but higher on removal (especially enchantment and artifact removal). As well, blue is very popular in the meta at this time, so protection from removal is key and some hexproof/shroud is needed.

Commanders of our Meta:

There are some obvious win cons in this deck (Black Sun's Zenith + Hapatra, Vizier of Poisons + Triumph of the Hordes ) but I will create a more detailed section on it after some more testing.

Props to Daedalus19876 for his inspiration deck and the ideas that I got from it.

Thanks Chris for your feedback!
