Welcome to Mazirek, Kraul Death Priest EDH.

Quick Description

This deck aims to make the most of some sacrificing synergies. Generally speaking, there are a good number of token generators that provide easy sacrifice fodder, and then there are a good number of sacrifice outlets whose end value is enhanced by Mazirek's ability to grow your entire team each time you sacrifice anything. It's important to find a balance between a board big enough to be scary with the +1/+1 counter enhancements from Mazirek and sacrificing enough things to net you the value necessary to win. Don't be afraid to sacrifice nontoken creatures as well - there are going to be many times where the value gained by sacrificing a creature that cannot currently attack or block profitably is better than just having a chump blocker to soak up some damage.

You will like this deck if:

• You like to see creatures die a lot.

• You like having big creatures.

• You like having the option to kill people with commander damage via an evasive commander.

You will not like this deck if:

• You have a difficult time assessing the current value of individual creatures on your battlefield.

• You want to be casting a lot of non-creature spells.

• You like to combo off to kill your opponents.

Sacrifice outlets that can be used more than once per turn cycle:

• Sadistic Hypnotist can clear out hands very quickly.

• Viscera Seer is good card selection.

• Woe Strider see Viscera Seer .

• Sylvan Safekeeper protection (at a steep cost) that can also nuke out an opponent to end the game at instant speed with Mazirek.

• Razaketh, the Foulblooded can get you whatever you're missing at the time.

• Jarad, Golgari Lich Lord can break board stalls and get loads of damage through without worrying about chump blocks.

• Yawgmoth, Thran Physician can eliminate threats and draw cards.

Limited sacrifice outlets (once per turn cycle or one-time use):

• Birthing Pod lets you pod chain to scary threats over time.

• Phyrexian Tower provides a bit of extra mana when needed.

• Priest of Forgotten Gods keeps opponents boards in check and draws an extra card.

• Ghoulcaller Gisa can turn big threats into many threats, allowing for better punch-through capability. Also good removal resilience.

• Vraska, Golgari Queen offers some card draw and must be killed before she uses her ultimate.

• Smothering Abomination is great card advantage.

• God-Eternal Bontu can draw you a bunch of cards and make your team unexpectedly large, allowing for loads of surprise damage.

• The Gitrog Monster provides card advantage and you can spend some mana each turn to negate the downside with Drownyard Temple .

Good non-token sacrifice fodder:

• Hangarback Walker can make a bunch of fliers once he's been buffed up a bit.

• Nullpriest of Oblivion is a pretty useless body once he brings back his friend.

• Eternal Witness similar to Nullpriest of Oblivion .

• Sakura-Tribe Elder sacrifices itself to ramp early, or can be used for bigger effects if you don't need more mana.

• Reassembling Skeleton just comes back again.

• Caustic Caterpillar removes annoying artifacts/enchantments, or can be used for bigger effects if you don't need its removal option.

• Yavimaya Elder gets lands for you no matter how it dies, and can be used on its own to draw a card.

• Solemn Simulacrum rewards you for killing it.

Utility:

• Hardened Scales , Winding Constrictor , and Corpsejack Menace make creatures big faster.

• Dictate of Erebos and Grave Pact keep your opponents in check and provide extra Mazirek triggers.

• Blood Artist provides part extra damage, part life total stabilization.

• Reyhan, Last of the Abzan and The Ozolith provide resilience against removal.

• Sheoldred, Whispering One keeps opponents boards in check and provides recursion for whatever you might need back.

• Kalonian Hydra can really up the power of your board, and does not require your other creatures to attack to do so.

• Tergrid, God of Fright   is like a mini It That Betrays . Works well with things like Grave Pact , Rankle, Master of Pranks , and Priest of Forgotten Gods , but will also allow you to take things your opponents naturally sacrifice like Sakura-Tribe Elder s, fetchlands, or permanents that might be discarded by spell-based decks running things like Faithless Looting . The flip side is almost certainly less valuable in this deck, but it can be a drain on the opponents resources if you needed it for some reason.
