Who Doesn't Love Revels?

Commander / EDH* RG (Gruul)

threevisits

This is a Leeroy Jenkins style deck (the author endorses comforting oneself with chicken if the strategy doesn't work out).

The win-cons are as follows:

In these colours, the deck needs to work hard for card draw and efficiency. The following provide the gas for the deck:

  • Zendikar Resurgent and Lifecrafter's Bestiary are two recently printed cards that are perfect for decks with ramp and creatures. You can get a fairly explosive cantrip going off Zendikar Resurgent, if you're lucky. Hunter's Prowess is great for this deck's strategy.
  • Either one of Sylvan Library or Abundance in play make for great hand fixing and/or filling. If you manage to get both out at once then, since Abundance puts cards into your hand. This gets around the Library's "choose two cards in your hand drawn this turn", thus allowing you to net three cards per turn for free.

To discuss the deck's somewhat thin removal package:

  • Krosan Grip is amazing for getting rid of a threatening artifact or enchantment. If an opponent is sitting on a Nevinyrral's Disk, and you don't want it to be activated, then this totally saves you and there's nothing they can do about it.
  • Red struggles to find removal which is not based on damage. Enter Chaos Warp.
  • Berserk is wonderful, because not only can it be used to make your creatures huge in a last-ditch effort to kill someone, but also because it can be used on an opponent's creatures (preferably their commander) once they have attacked an opponent. This can sometimes take out both an opponent and a threatening creature for !
  • Beast Within is a classic all-rounder in green. You don't care about them having a 3/3 beast when you are swinging for 20+ damage with a single creature.
  • Wasteland and Strip Mine are absolutely necessary for dealing with an opponent's Maze of Ith, or their Homeward Path (if you are about to cast Insurrection).

"The gods of Theros are born of the expectations and beliefs of mortals. If I have found a godhood, what does that say about their true desires?"
—Xenagos, god of revels
