Maybeboard

I loved my Niv-Mizzet, Parun deck, but with the same avenues for wins, and somewhat repetitive gameplay (cast niv, wheel, combo) I eventually retired the deck (Wheel With It Niv-Mizzet Parun EDH)

I spent the next few months searching for a new commander deck to replace it, and after 2-3 decks I've tried and failed to really enjoy I think I've found it. Xyris, the Writhing Storm gives me everything I loved about Niv-Mizzet, Parun and Niv-Mizzet, the Firemind while still having very different ways to win and a completely new strategy and deck building challenge. With the addition of green, there are far more ramp options opened up and plenty of fun Overrun effects to finish the game.

This is a work in progress.

Xyris, the Writhing Storm is the key piece to this deck. It enables all of our lines to victory and provides card draw on top of the incredible. oddly enough, card:Xyris isn't always at the top of someones remove on sight list. It only swings for 3 and will draw your opponent 3 cards which is a trade that many people are more than happy to make. But the real ability is the one that comes in the first ability:

"Whenever an opponent draws a card except the first one they draw in each of their draw steps, create a 1/1 green Snake creature token"

This ability can and will generate an insane amount of value over the course of even just 1 or 2 turns. everyone likes to draw cards in commander so we help them out with things like Humble Defector , Kami of the Crescent Moon , and Howling Mine . To keep our opponents on their feet and make sure they don't go removing our board we can constantly wheel their hand with cards like Jace's Archivist , Teferi's Puzzle Box , or Magus of the Wheel which are all generating us more snakes.

The combination of a lot of draw, token generation, and creatures constantly hitting the field gives us multiple paths to victory, even when card:Xyris does eventually get removed.

This category consists of cards that are going to help our opponents draw. Seems counter intuitive right? Well, we are going to use all of this draw to out value all of our opponents and eventually they wont be wanting to draw any more cards.

  • Howling Mine : This is an easy piece to garner some good will from the table. Who is going to say no to an extra card every turn? It hits me too so I still see the benefit but I also create a snake for everyone else's turn.

  • Humble Defector : Another grouphug card that is going to help us. The best art is, we don't even need it to come back to us as we are creating another 2 snakes each time an opponent activates it.

  • Incendiary Command : This is a great utility card. It gives the deck a wheel with the ability to deal 2 to each creature, which is great for token spam. It also has the ability to target a land such as a Cabal Coffers or a Gaea's Cradle .

  • Jace's Archivist : This gives a repeatable wheel on a stick. The biggest downsides are the fact that without something like Fervor it comes in tapped. Still, even with such a drawback, the ability to repeatedly wheel for only is really useful.

  • Kami of the Crescent Moon : This gives us the same effect as Howling Mine , on a creature, and is useful for the same reasons.

  • Magus of the Wheel : The best part of this card is the fact that it will draw everyone 7 cards. Which will net 21 snakes with Xyris, the Writhing Storm .

  • Molten Psyche : This is a great wheel when Metalcraft is active, have your opponents draw 7 cards, you make 21 snakes and deal 7 damage to each of them. More likely however, this is just a normal wheel.

  • Reforge the Soul : This will draw everyone 7 cards for potentially only . This will net 21 snakes.

  • Teferi's Puzzle Box : This is essentially re-drawing our opponents hands every turn and will generate a ton of value with card:Xyris on the battlefield.

  • Time Reversal : This will also wheel for 7 and will put our opponents graveyards back into the deck, which could be very useful in any kind of reanimator deck.

  • Wheel of Fate : Really cheap card that can be cast early, even before the commander, which will net 21 snakes when it resolves.

  • Winds of Change : Very cheap wheel that will certainly net value with the commander out.

Updates Add

I have finally gotten around to updating my deck with proxies of cards that are currently in other decks.

Proxies are a great way to play magic on a budget and I encourage it as long as your group is okay with it. I enjoy the collectable aspect of mtg so I will continue to get the actual cards for that, but I wont ever buy more than 1. That being said, id be happy to play against all proxy decks, regardless if you own the actual cards or not, so long as the power levels are fairly well matched.
