Maybeboard

Introduction

Hello! Thank you for looking at my deck! I have been playing magic for a few years now, but only recently started to get more involved with it and play more actively with my friends! I've started building my own decks, and this is my first shot at building a commander deck. It's not finished, as I still have to decide on which lands to add, basic vs non-basic, and see if there are any other cards that fit well with the cards I have selected so far. This deck isn't very serious, and I don't plan to use it competitively, just to play with friends and family, and with the people at the local shop we go to.

Goal of the Deck

My inspiration for this deck originally came from Krav, the Unredeemed and Regna, the Redeemer , I initially wanted to build a modern 3 color deck centered around them, but it ended up being much easier to build the deck under the commander 100 card limit. I needed a commander deck anyways, and white, black and green are my favorite colors to play and combine anyways!

I followed the formula for building a commander deck that the8x8theory.tumblr.com recommends (34 lands, and choosing 8 themes and 8 cards to fit those themes) , then modified it from there. The effects I chose were: Lifegain, Token Gain, Token Sacrifice, Landramp, +1/+1 Counter gain, and "Board Improvement". I did have an 8th category, Untap, but didn't have many cards to go in it, so I removed it in favor of adding more counter gain cards. A bunch of these cards fall under multiple categories too, so it was hard deciding how to place them.

The original idea was to base the deck around Krav and Regna, but when I swapped it over to commander I ended up with more themes. Initially the plan was gain life and sacrifice tokens, but over time the main theme became gain counters. I had a hard time finding more cards like Krav in my colors, that gained benefits from sacrificing tokens or creatures, so I'd love suggestions.

As of right now, the basic idea of the deck is to gain life, get out tokens for sacrifice (mostly), and get an insane amount of counters on a large amount of creatures. There's a lot of mid to high cost cards, so the land ramp of green comes in handy to get everything out.

Ways This Deck Can Succeed

This deck has some really fun combos, both with the creatures and artifacts, and with the planeswalkers. Cards like Abzan Falconer and Abzan Battle Priest can make weaker cards stronger out of nowhere, especially if your opponent isn't prepared to deal with an entire board that is now flying. A combo I think would be really cool would be Ajani, Mentor of Heroes and Ajani, Caller of the Pride. Gaining 100 life and 100+ cat tokens? Then add in the possibility of Rhox Faithmender, Ajani's Pridemate or Beacon of Immortality, there's lots of possibilities in this deck.

Ways This Deck Can Fail

This deck could fail hard if you can't get the land out, or can't get land out quickly. It could also fail vs land wipes or boardwipes (Which is one of the reasons I included Elspeth, Knight-Errant for her ability to add tokens and counters, and for her emblem, to help protect the board. But, if she doesn't come out, the deck will still be vulnerable to wipes). It could also do poorly against decks that run a lot of spells that deal -1/-1 spells to all creatures, effectively getting rid of most of the tokens.

I tried to avoid cards that gave one creature counters or abilities, and tried to focus more on cards that improved the whole board. That way it would be harder to use "destroy target creature" spells, or at least harder to chose which creature to use them on.

Maybeboard

I have Anafenza, the Foremost on the maybe board as a possible commander instead of Reyhan, Last of the Abzan and Ravos, Soultender. I'll likely get her as well and decide who I like best through play testing. I've seen other similar decks run Ghave, Guru of Spores as the commander as well.

I also have Vraska the Unseen on the maybeboard but I'll likely add her to the board as well, populating and adding counters to the tokens she creates could be very powerful.

Regal Caracal Is another card I may add in to combo with the other cat token cards, there aren't a lot of cat tokens, unless the huge combo goes off. It could still play well with Leonin Warleader, but it's uses are very specific unless I add more cats. I have Mastermind's Acquisition in the maybeboard as well, just because it could be simpler to use that to grab Regal Caracal from outside the game if either of my cat combos are out. Plus that card has other utility for setting up other combos, or getting specific cards out early.
