This is a first draft of a control deck using new cards from the Amonkhet set. Updated description coming soon.

The main win-con is procing Wayward Servant, which can be done either with Zombie creatures or through 2/2 Zombie tokens. This deck will feature plenty of direct life loss, but in the case that this is not possible, there will be plenty of 2/2 Zombie tokens to attack and defend with.

The enchantments in the deck serve to generate an army of tokens and thereby proc the win-cons.

Control will come via discard, counterspells, good ol' creature removal. These will serve to control the field during the early phase of the game until I can set up my board/win-cons.

I am looking for suggestions for this deck. Please share your thoughts! If you have a suggestion for what to add into the deck, please also suggest what could be removed. Also, if something in the Maybeboard would be worthwhile, let me know that as well!

Thanks all! If you like this deck, please give it an upvote and if you're up for it, feel free to take a look at my other decks:

Cemetery Reaper doesn't seem like the best lord for the deck, wouldn't Lord of the Undead fit a control build better?

Thank you XD

It's definitely not. I mainboarded them because I own them. Lord of the Undead will work, although it's rather pricey. I'll mainboard it regardless. Thank you for your suggestion!

not sure id consider this "control" more of a slow midrange deck.

how about Binding Mummy, Tidehollow Sculler and Vile Rebirth? they add the "control" element to the deck.

also while the zombie lords are useful, Plague Belcher may be a better fit here (modern is good at mass removal) or Death Baron to make your zombies to attack into/block.

also consider swapping Despise for Inquisition of Kozilek/Thoughtseize or atleast Castigate

other modern cards to consider Mana Tithe, Smallpox, Intangible Virtue and Quest for the Gravelord.

I originally did have Binding Mummy and Tidehollow Sculler in this deck, and then I removed them. Then I want them again, then I don't, then I do, etc.. I think I'll re-add them. Vile Rebirth is also a good option.

The reason I use Despise is because I'm trying to limit any expensive cards to things I already have (i.e. Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth). I've also been considering Plague Belcher. I might end up using those.

Thank you for your suggestions!

Liliana, the Last Hope would find a home here

Damn, that would be a good fit. It's a pretty pricey card, so I'll add two if I can ever find the funds to do so. Thanks!

JararoNatsu just wait until she rotates out of standard, she will plummet.

Binding mummy can't stop your opponents from attacking, only blocking. It's not a control card and it's not very good.

Deck is cool, but needs better execution. My suggestions are Path to Exile and Fatal Push for the removal aspect of your control idea. I'd also suggest more hand attack as it is one of the things that black does best in modern. I like the decision for it to be a control deck as you are slowly grinding out value from your Wayward Servants and Plague Belchers. I also think that Gurmag Angler is a must, as it eats up your hand attack and removal spells for a nice win con and a star of black control builds. It's even a zombie, so that's a nice fit. Cool deck, keep at it.

Thank you for your suggestions! I don't think I'll use Path to Exile because the more creatures I exile, the less creatures there are for Vile Rebirth (if I even keep it) and Necromancer's Covenant. The deck could use more removal and hand attack, I agree. I've been looking for ways to improve those aspects of the deck. I would add Thoughtseize but they're just too expensive for me.

It could just be me, but I have a hard time seeing how I would proc Revolt on Fatal Push. That (and it's cost) is a deterrent for me. For now, I'll fit them in. I'll also try to fit in Gurmag Angler, but I'm not sure what I would remove for it.

Thanks for the reply, I will try to add a bit more to the discussion. Firstly, you don't need to worry about getting revolt off of Fatal Push, the card still hits countless threats in modern, most notably things like Tarmogoyf and Goblin Guide. I'd suggest moving up to a playset, and relying on your wider-reaching kill spell Mortify lategame. I also understand that you want to keep a budget, so I won't suggest Marsh Flats, but that is a pretty efficient card that synergizes well with Fatal Push. Go for the Throat and Doom Blade are also options for slightly more expensive removal. I hadn't considered that Path to Exile disables Vile Rebirth. I'd still suggest 2-3 in the sideboard for Kitchen Finks and Voice of Resurgence. As for Gurmag Angler, perhaps cutting Dark Salvation or Dash Hopes would make room. I feel like you are getting enough zombies from Endless Ranks of the Dead after setting up with Wayward Servants, Tidehollow Scullers, and a Gurmag Angler, and Dash Hopes is probably beaten out by Mana Tithe as you will be taking a risk by giving your opponent choice (They will always pick the life loss when they are playing a spell that could win them the game, and always the counter when they just need to survive the turn. Overall, it can't function as a finisher or an effective safeguard lategame, so I'd suggest cutting at least 2). Thanks for response.

I like the addition of Gurmag Angler, and the additional discard, my only issue is that (from my own experience) it can be hard to keep enough zombies in play to trigger ranks ... let alone +/- 12 zombies in the deck.

while its probably to discard focused for the deck, Waste Not could be interesting here, especially with Miasmic Mummy(akh)/Rotting Rats but I'm probably getting off track.....

Binding Mummy has potential, but i can see why you removed it, needs more instant speed zombies to really be a "control" card (like Necromancer's Stockpile/Vile Rebirth/Relentless Dead/Zombie Infestation etc) and those cards probably arnt worth it.

do you have plans for a sideboard yet? Stony Silence is solid against tron/affinity/lantern, Surgical Extraction/Extirpate is almost required against some decks (especially if your helping them discard)

JararoNatsu says... #16

Yeah, the reason why I removed Binding Mummy is because while I could tap plenty of creatures on my own turn, I would need to be able to create Zombies at instant speed in order to actually get "control" use out of them.

I have considered turning toward the discard-heavy, Waste Not using route for this deck. It would certainly be fun, but I'd have to completely change things up. It's in the back of my mind, though XD

I don't consider myself to be serious enough of a player to actually build sideboards. I could make them, for the pleasure of others and mayhaps my future use, but I currently have no intention of actually owning a sideboard. However, if I were to do so, Stony Silence is one thing that would absolutely find itself in that list.

Love the thought of Mortify in here but wouldn't Anguished Unmaking fill better. 3 life is a lot in modern but I feel like the extra reach on it might be worth it. Just a thought.

I've been on and off on Anguished Unmaking. It's definitely the better card, and I can hit more with it, but that 3 damage (on top of whatever damage I've taken and the hit from Sign in Blood) can be an issue. Then again, I can heal it all back with Wayward Servant. I'll continue to think about it.

Ya I missed the bloods. I think it can still be justified though since you aren't running Godless Shrine. That alone is kind of saving damage.

JararoNatsu says... #21

I ended up adding them. Figured I can just heal through the hit, so I'm not too worried about it. Thanks XD

kevzin, I completely forgot to swap stuff out for Path to Exile. As for the Liliana's, they're both out of my budget range at the moment. I'm waiting for Liliana, the Last Hope to go off rotation and see what the price looks like then. I'll consider Godless Shrine.
