Description

Turn 3 Waste Not + Burning Inquiry usually generates a ton of card advantage or tempo. If we also have/get Raven's Crime that turn, we usually win on the spot by generating endless extra mana and card advantage. This combo was inspired by my friend Cory.

Faithless Looting is critical to finding our combo pieces. Squee, Goblin Nabob combined with Faithless, Liliana of the Veil, Collective Brutality, and Geier Reach Sanitarium generates nearly unlimited card advantage.

Cards explanation

Anger of the Gods: We are very susceptible to aggro because they're usually faster and unfortunately empty their hands quickly. Anger is great, and we can easily cycle it away in other matchups. Pyroclasm would be better (because we have difficulty supporting ) except it fails to hit Dredge.

Dakmor Salvage gives endless fuel for Raven's Crime. However, coming in tapped is a huge liability for a combo deck.

Inquisition of Kozilek (and Thoughtseize) is obviously great since Modern is dominated by combo, and it also fuels our combo. Just wanted to make a note here that it hits ~91% of cards that Thoughtseize hits in Modern.

Collective Brutality is fast and powerful, and works great with Squee. I would play more copies, but we would rather play turn 2 Waste Not or Liliana's Caress. Also it unfortunately only hits ~53% of cards that Thoughtseize hits in Modern. This amounts to 2.7 cards average; typically 1.7 after a turn 1 Thoughtseize, Inquisition, Serum Visions, or Sleight of Hand. Thus Collective Brutality's "Duress" mode whiffs quite often. Also taking a utility spell isn't as good as stripping a combo piece, unless it happens to be CoCo, Scapeshift, or Living End cascade spells.

Smallpox is a great card, esp. in 8-Rack! I'm just not sure it fits here. Compared to 8-Rack, we're not as interested in reducing our opponent to 0 cards. We also have a much higher curve, higher than most Modern decks. I guess it's great against Tron? The creature removal mode is very useful, but we desperately need more instant-speed removal (than our single Bolt) first.

I'll add it to the Maybeboard

And what do you think of Dark Deal?

If you're playing Casual, Dark Deal might be worth trying. Since this is geared towards competitive Modern, you're almost always hitting 1-4 cards with Dark Deal, whereas Burning Inquiry always hits 3, making it a worse Burning Inquiry for extra mana. Collective Defiance is almost a strict upgrade, and I'm not even sure if it's playable.

I played a bit online but ran into all aggro decks, so it didn't do so well. It should be good vs. combo and control (which are actually more prevalent than aggro in competitive Modern). It trounces any casual decks, of course.
