This is a pretty good attempt at a first deck. I can see what it's meant to do, and most of your cards work toward that goal.

For specific tips, I'd probably take the Birds of Paradise out of the sideboard, and possibly the Day of Judgment s as well. The problem with Day is that it will wreck you just as much as your opponent. Instead, I'd use Fight Bears (Ulvenwald Tracker ), and a full four of Fiend Hunter . They'll let you control the board without wrecking your stuff. Fight Bears are pretty saucy with all of your +1/+1 counter generation too!

I'd also recommend taking out the card:Commander's Authority in favor of the same number of card:Cathars' Crusade. It will provide a similar effect, but is much more powerful.

Further than that, you'd probably be more consistent with four copies of Champion of the Parish . You're a bit heavy on three drops, so you could probably drop the Elder Cathar in favor of them. I'd also try to fit Thalia, Guardian of Thraben somewhere in there.

Anyhow, I like the theme. It reminds me quite a bit of one of my first decks, which was an Onslaught era soldier tribe deck. :)

Do you really need the mana fixing cards when your biggest creature is only a 3 drop, maby add something like swords or Wolfir Silverheart to add some bigger threats,im guessing you are avoiding heroes due to rotation. It is a cool deck though :).

Don't forget about miracle cards. Revenge of the Hunted is just so good. It'll turn a losing game into a even board state and will help as removal for small creatures like Blood Artist , Delver, Goblin/Elf Lords, ect. It's just, such a great card that you can't ignore it one bit. Also, The Borderland Ranger just seems, a little out of place. you won't need him because 24 lands with split color should never really be a color issue. Even more so with 4 dual lands and 2 Caverns.

I also think that Gather the Townsfolk and Travel Preparations are just a wast. Try running a bit more removal and control. 4 O-rings would be a good idea :)

Anyway, if you'd like, check out my deck The Things Venser hid in His Closet and give me a few suggestions :)

As far as your maybe board

[angelic overseer: I tried this card in a mono white human build, and it's alright, and has good protection and bonds nicely with a silverblade, problem i had in mono white was playing less lands since it was indeed a mono colored deck with a low curve. if you would only 1 of its kinda ehhh (with only 1 you don't tend to draw it when it would really count, so it's a little unreliable in that aspect) and looking again i see no silverblade paladin so i'd say no. PS: silverblade paladin is pretty much a must in any human build. :)

mikaeus, the lunarch: He could fit into this deck nicely speeding up the pumping process on champion of lambholt. maybe 1 or 2 of.

rancor: could be okay, but it would really shine on doublestrike ( silverblade/ mirran crusader ). with champions of lambholt you don't really need the trample since nothing will be able to block your stuff after turn X anyway, but the +2+0 does pump her up to quicken up the process. Maybe run 2 not sure 3 is needed.

herald of war:it's just too slow and the effect doesn't really matter in a human deck as your stuff is already cheap enough that, a 1 less cost past turn 6 for humans is really underwhelming.

now I definitely think you need silverblade paladin in this deck. I'd take doomsayers out as they are a biit slow and the fateful hour proc is pretty low, another candidate is the increasing devotion this is a low curve deck and this is a high cost card, travel preperations is fine, but you can easily put better things in for it like revenge of the hunted] which is just an amazing miracle and fine off a hardcast. I guess another valid candidate to take out if you want to keep any of this in is borderland ranger, he fits more specifically into a 3 color environment where you play him to ensure you get all your colors or to ensure you don't miss a land drop, since you generally play more mid range spells.

Just some thoughts :) a sideboard would be nice too, they're always nice. kept getting error messages even though links were correct so I took em out sorry.

I would suggest cutting the Increasing Devotion and Travel Preparations for a playset of Rancor . preparations is slow for constructed, rancor is fast and gives trample, devotion is expensive for what it does and rancor is one of those cards 4 of is pretty good to have.

I would cut Champion of Lambholt . I could go on and on about how a 1/1 for 3 is bad but with testing I think you will come to the same conclusion as me. While she does get powered up, that small time she is a 1/1 she is a VERY big target for just about every removal spell your opponent could possibly have. The chances of her getting big enough to make a significant difference in the game before she is killed consistantly is just not good enough to run her.

that is true, but if they allow you to ramp her it's game over pretty fast, turn 3 play her, next turn gather shes at 3, next turn silverblade paladin shes a 4/4 doublstrike and all your guys get through. against control decks she's easily sided out, against creature matchups she destroys if they don't deal with her fast, as most creature decks form of control is a burn spell (aka 2-3 damage), so once she get's past that she's pretty safe. She's pretty much the whole appeal of going G/W humans. You should run Thalia, Guardian of Thraben , she protects lambholt well by A) delaying their control long enough for lambholt to do her thing. and B) being a natural lightning rod for control herself (which is what you want from her).

It's simply too bad that Asceticism is rotating. That was a card that only I ran at my local FNM and it won games. Their creature-kill spells were nothing but dead cards in their hand. Vapor Snag ? I'm not worried. I simple was just amazing...if only they'd reprint it. Oh well...I've got two more months of sheer fun with it :D

just pulled a Garruk, Primal Hunter . should I consider putting him in here? or is he too slow for this type of deck?

thundernick says... #12

i dont think theres enough muscle for his -3 to be worth it. the token gen is nice but he's slow

secondly should i put in Birds of Paradise in instead of the pilgrims?or should i split it up between the 2 or what would you do?

k thanks thundernick i was thinking the same thing.

for sure! i think it works best if you're running a Titan, or Wurmcoil Engine . which, incidentally, is the best with Ulvenwald Tracker haha

with just G/W you don't need birds, if you wanted to splash red then birds would be useful.

I playtested this deck a little, and it's pretty fun! It's a nice challenge if it can get set up early! Oblivion Rings are pretty furstrating to work around, so I'm glad you're running them! It even gave me an idea/inkling of a direction decks might turn! +1, dude!

July 23, 2012 3:41 a.m.

Sebastes says... #18

oh thanks apoc7k. I do agree that is crazy difficult to win against this deck when it gets set up early. and even if they sweep the board this deck recovers quite nicely

My one concern about this is the Angel of Jubilation . I get the abilities of it, it just seems like it doesn't fit very well, and with its high cost, will come too late to be of terribly much help.

Agreed musefreak14, what would you consider as a replacement?

card:Cathars' Crusade would help this deck a lot. You have enough soldiers that Captain of the Watch could be a game winner for you, and it would go great with card:Cathars' Crusade if you decide to put that in.

Hey, so I'm building a GW Human aggro deck similar to this, and I have just one question. Are the Kessig Cagebreakers working out for you? I've been debating putting them in, but I can't decide if they would be good or not

August 13, 2012 3:17 a.m.

Sebastes says... #25

yes Superpack1 the cagebreakers do help quite a bit especially against control decks that that just destroy all your early game stuff.
