Maybeboard

Wanna ramp in black? Wanna control the board? Wanna go big? Then Drana is the lady for you!

Drana excels at multiple things when it comes to EDH.

  1. Single Target Removal - Most decks go light on due to the nature of casual EDH, so having it as a strength is unique and dynamic.
  2. Killing With Commander Damage - People tend to forget this rule exists but always having a way out against a lifegain deck is big plus.
  3. Playing Politics - Having a repeatable kill spell to anything on the board opens up a lot of room to play the hero, thus turning a game in your favor.

Ramp & Land Draw

Tutors & Win-Cons

  • Exsanguinate and Torment of Hailfire - The best win-cons in the deck by far. Tap for 20 and watch the world burn.
  • Crypt Rats - Do you have more life than everyone else and more mana that life totals? BEHOLD THE RATS!!!
  • Tree of Perdition - The "dumb" wincon in the deck. Drana the Tree down to 1 toughness, tap Tree, swing Drana.
  • Gray Merchant of Asphodel - While not maximized in the slightest, dealing 8-10 damage to everyone and then potentially bringing it back again with cards like Sheoldred, Whispering One, Chainer, Dementia Master, or Mimic Vat is always welcomed.
  • Vorpal Sword - This deck has a deceptive amount of evasion creatures between Flying, Intimidate, Swampwalk, Shadow, and Menace. Having the option to sneak out a win if you have 11 mana and an unblocked creature is always worth the include.
  • Wishclaw Talisman - I mentioned that this deck likes to be political, well this is the most political tutor there is. It is easy to make a friend with someone if you let them tutor a card for 1 mana. Just be sure to always stipulate that you get the tutor back as part of your negotiations.
  • Beseech the Queen - This tutor was designed for Mono decks! Not only does it hit your best win-cons as soon as you can cast it, it also finds multiple boardwipe options as well.
  • Varragoth, Bloodsky Sire - The weakest tutor in the deck, but to be fair, this deck is trying to be a 7 out of 10, so having creature that needs to be removed makes this tutor much more "fair" and interactive.

Protection & Utility

  • Lightning Greaves & Swiftfoot Boots - Since this deck involves a lot of boardwipes and focuses on the commander as a win-con, having protection and haste are quite important to capitalize on changing the shape of the board.
  • Chainer, Dementia Master & Geth, Lord of the Vault - Creatures are going to be dying a lot with this deck so having ways of taking advantage of graveyards is a wonderful way to make up for what this deck lacks.
  • Blast Zone, Bojuka Bog, & Ghost Quarter - These lands all help fill target strengths of other decks or help cover weaknesses of our own.
  • Profane Command & Black Market Connections - Utility wins you games, and these cards have plenty of it.
  • Lashwrithe - It's always nice to be able to beef up a creature to make anything a threat.
  • Shadowspear - Sometimes Hexproof or lack of life is a problem, this card just fits with Drana, Kalastria Bloodchief so well.
  • Dauthi Voidwalker - A practically unblockable 3/2 that can hurt graveyard decks and grab you a great card ... tons of utility here.
  • Mimic Vat - This deck likes killing things. This card takes the best of those options and allows you to abuse it turn after turn.
  • Mirage Mirror - This is the epitome of utility! My favorite play is to copy your own mana doubling cards like Cabal Coffers or Caged Sun, but taking an opponents Aura Shards or Ghostly Prison might also make a huge difference in a game.
  • Opposition Agent - This might be the most "spikey" card in the deck. Tutors are great, stealing someone else's tutor is just better ... and much much meaner.
  • Beacon of Unrest - Sometimes you really need to recover after a key piece has been taken out. This fills that roll by grabbing most of our powerful cards out of the graveyard.
  • Gonti, Lord of Luxury - This is one of the weakest pieces in the deck, but the roll it is meant to fill is searching for answers in someone else's deck.

Board Control, Removal, & Boardwipes

  • Dark Impostor - Do you want a Drana that takes activated abilities? Because I sure do!
  • Demon's Disciple & Plaguecrafter - These are great to have in your early turns because it can really stall out the game, which is what this deck likes to do.
  • Archfiend of Depravity - What I like most about this card is that it is usually just friendly enough to not get hated off the board, but restrictive enough where a good number of decks have a hard time playing around it.
  • Sheoldred, Whispering One - If this card isn't answered immediately it locks down games.
  • Defile & Tragic Slip - Instant speed removal for is always powerful. Having it also get around Indestructible is an added bonus.
  • Erebos's Intervention - Acting as creature or graveyard removal is wonderful versatility in a card!
  • Feed the Swarm - Enchantment removal is Black's weakness, so having this in a Mono deck is almost a requirement.
  • Crypt Rats - Every deck needs a pet card, it just so happens that the versatility of this one is extremely high. RATS FOR LIFE!!!
  • Dead of Winter and Mutilate - Efficiently costed boardwipes that take advantage of us wanting to play a ton of Swamps.
  • Massacre Girl - A fringe boardwipe that could easily be replaced, but there are enough other things in this deck that can start the chain of death that make me like this card.
  • The Meathook Massacre - The fact that this card stays around and has value after it is cast is too powerful to pass up.

Card Draw

  • Dread Presence - The versatility of this card is wonderful due to it's ability to be both a "Weenie" hater and residual card draw.
  • Necropotence - By far the best card draw option for Mono due to being able to fill your hand to max at the end of every turn.
  • Night's Whisper, Sign in Blood, & Read the Bones - Having low cost draw spells really helps even out the deck, especially one that typically has extra unused mana laying around.
  • Phyrexian Arena & Bloodgift Demon - Consistently providing an extra card per turn at the cost of one life is a great value, granted these fall of in value the later in the game you get them.
  • Erebos, God of the Dead & Greed - Having a mana-sink card draw tool is ultra powerful in this deck because it allows you to refuel after you empty all of your ramp pieces onto the board.

Tips and Tricks

Use Your Tutors Wisely

  • I like to grab Cabal Coffers early to not become a direct threat while still getting that ramp you need. Don't be afraid to get something that isn't the game winner, because becoming the threat too early is the best way to lose in EDH.
  • The mid-game is where you go and find the answer to your overwhelming threat. A lot of games of EDH hinge on a single card that causes an issue or a board-state that stays stale for too long, allowing people too much time to set up. This might not always be the flashy option, but breaking up things before they take off tends to work out well for the deck that just wants to ramp all day.
  • In the late game you just need to end it, so make sure to get one of your win-cons. Yes this deck can stay in a long drawn out game, but Drana ain't got time for that!

Slow Play

Due to the tutors of this deck and the nature of ramp, don't be afraid to slow play. You don't want to come out and be the threat. This deck excels when things get ugly and loves to turn the tides against the one player who get out in front. Having a single target removal spell on your commander means that it might see hate if played too early, but will get some love it is used to take down the person in the lead in the mid-game.

The Correct Pronunciation of Drana, Kalastria Bloodchief

Some people might say DR-AH-NA or DR-AN-NA but they are wrong. The correct way to say her name is:

DR-A-NA-NA-NA-NA-NA-NA-NA BAT GIRL!
