Vineyard Aggro

Modern

mastermaxwellh

A wonky deck I thought up while looking at future sight cards. It is based around Magus of the Vineyard. Essentially, it functions like a Red Burn deck, but uses the green mana from Magus to also power out green threats like Avatar of the Resolute and Strangleroot Geist. The strength of the deck is that it can function reasonably well without magus, but with magus it becomes very powerful. My testing is not done yet, so comments or suggestions are appreciated.

Card Choices

Magus of the Vineyard: While this effect is symmetrical, Magus Aggro is optimized alpha strike using the extra green mana. The opponent's deck probably is not. This card almost always helps us far more than it helps our opponents. Most of the time, they won't even be playing green!

Strangleroot Geist: This guy is the perfect card for the deck. Double green makes him easily castable with the Magus, haste is excellent for aggro, and he comes back stronger after dying. He even synergizes with Avatar of the Resolute. All in all, he's just ideal.

Avatar of the Resolute: An aggressive 3/2 for double green. Trample gives him a bit of extra reach. Most of the time, his ability will not be relevant or needed, but keep in mind that he synergizes with himself and Strangleroot Geist.

Kalonian Tusker: An aggressive 3/3 for 2. 'Nuff said.

Avaricious Dragon: Aggro decks empty their hands quickly. This is especially true for a rampy aggro deck like ours. Therefore, the dragon helps us survive in the lategame with card advantage and a large evasive body. His "downside" is really irrelevant: by the time you cast the dragon, your hand will be nearly empty anyways.

Lightning Bolt, Lava Spike, Rift Bolt: These spells form our disruption, removal and direct damage. Never leave home without them.

Manamorphose: Since there will be times when you can't get a Magus in play or stop one from dying, Manamorphose will fix your mana and/or help you draw.

Strategy

Strategy for this deck is fairly simple. Generally, it plays like the child of Burn and Stompy: Play creatures, fling fire, repeat.
