Along time ago there was... kamigawa. Alot of people hated Kamigawa but in truth it really was a turning point in magic as a whole. There were some verry powerful cards printed in Kami block, but the mechanics introduced were not used at all in constructed (ignoring the affinity menace at the time).

Ninjas were one of the few standouts in that set that they seemed to be enjoyed by many and were just fun thematically. I played blue black ninja control for weeks back then and it was one of the most fun decks I've ever built, simply put, it was Ninjitsu enablers (Thopters, BlinkMoth, Moxen to accelerate), Kill Spells, Counter Spells, and Ninjas to do more Kill and board control. Even during affinity it put up some pretty good numbers, and got plenty of its share of top 8 finishes. It became a trademark of who I was. Ninjitsu was mine, and the judges often would have me go through the complete ruling for how it worked because of how deep I understood it (Ninjitsu has a few interesting nuances, fun corner case stuff you can use).

Time passed and magic became a different game, but I still had a soft spot in my heart for the little aggro-control deck that could. When I first learned about commander I was fascinated, but didn't see the ninja general for me. Sig River cutthroat is still the best for ninja tricks, but no... that is for other ninjas, not me. Until Planechase 2012 "Night of the Ninja" was released. It was like a weaker-precon version of all of my favorite deck, and sitting at the helm of it all, Vela.

When I first built Vela I constructed her as a sort of GoodStuff & Ninjas deck. Now I'm trying to take her in more of a ETB-Flicker-Ninja line of thinking. Ninjas help with the bouncing letting you get more and more value out of the team.
