Athreos Cruel Control

Cruel Control:

Athreos, Shroud-Veiled has an amazing ability, but it's slow (also he's 6 cmc), so this deck focuses on making it to the late game. Cards like Merciless Eviction, Cavalier of Night, Cavalier of Dawn, Kaya's Wrath, Rankle, Master of Pranks, Mangara of Corondor, Despark, and Path to Exile all help control the flow of the game and stop opposing win-cons.

Abusing Athreos:

Athreos's ability can be abused with sac outlets, like Attrition, Woe Strider, Altar of Dementia, and Viscera Seer. Then combine this with ETB-Trigger creatures, like Rune-Scarred Demon, Sidisi, Undead Vizier, Disciple of Bolas, and Knight of the White Orchid to get value.

Recursion:

Since Athreos's ability is slow (or you may be targeting opposing creatures with it), this deck has a focus on recursion. Cards like Sheoldred, Whispering One, Whip of Erebos, Coffin Queen, Doomed Necromancer, Animate Dead, Apprentice Necromancer, and Phyrexian Reclamation all aid in recurring valuable creatures from your graveyard.

Win-Cons:

Athreos does not have a clean-cut win-con like some commanders do, he won't go infinite and he won't drop fatties from the library. What he can do is provide two unique ways to win:

1) The first win-con uses a Coin Counter on either Kokusho, the Evening Star or Gray Merchant of Asphodel or both with Strionic Resonator. Then sac Koko or Gary to a sac outlet, you'll get two hits max from Coin Counters, but you can get more hits with a recursion piece at the ready.

2) The second win-con uses the opponents' creatures when they die or through graveyard theft. This is a less reliable win-con, but could be an interesting alternative.

Lastly, this deck is reactionary and meant to pivot throughout the game. So, if you enjoy a strategic game of playing gate-keeper then this deck is for you.
