Vaevictis, the Desolation

Vaevictis Asmadi wrought his rulership through devastation. While his cousins bickered and disagreed, discussed moralities and other realities, Vaevictis and his siblings had their eyes on concrete conquest. It was he, most powerful of his family, who led them to battle with his cousin, Nicol Bolas. He who laid waste to civilisations at a whim. He who lead armies to war. He who survived when his brothers turned on him at Bolas' command...

It was Vaevictis Asmadi, liege over destruction, strongest of his brothers, first among five to the fight, who went to war. And his harrowing brood covered the skies in flame as the Elder Dragon War began.

Vaevictis, the Desolation is a dragon tribal deck designed to lay waste across the battlefield, leaving your opponents scrambling in uncertainty as you warp and pull apart their plans while swooping in with a sea of fire from the skies.

• A threatening dragon tribal creature base to lay the groundwork on the battlefield. Effects that care about your dragons to pump their value to even more than giant fliers.
• Creatures that recur themselves, and effects to ensure your powerful dragons don't stay gone for long.
• Synergies with the top card of your library to allow Vaevictis' "chaos warp"-like ability to plan and cheat massive threats onto the board.

After the Ixalan block, I toyed with trying to dive into a tribal deck for a while, but never really found a creature type that interested me enough to actually build with. I settled on dragons as an idea a while ago, but never truly built the deck. I wanted to build a Kolaghan deck, but was worried about having such an expensive tribe of creatures without green to help ramp me. Then, after Dominaria, I toyed with using Darigaaz, but he just felt lacklustre as a commander.

Then, with Core 2019, I saw the Elder Dragons were getting new cards, and I immediately knew I had to build this deck with Vaevictis. I already had some experience with a topdeck manipulation deck with a Rashmi, Eternities Crafter deck (here), so I knew how much I enjoyed flipping over huge value plays there, and I couldn't wait to start flipping over giant dragons.
