A deck based on flying creatures and control. Can turn into a Teferi control pile at will after sideboarding.
Favorable Winds
and
Empyrean Eagle
are flying lords.
Teferi, Time Raveler
deals with control matchups.
Spectral Sailor
is amazing lategame.
Rally of Wings
can be a game ender, but you need to have at least 2 creatures on board for it to be worth it and you have so many power boosters, that this is almost a win-more card.
Warden of Evos Isle
speeds up the deck a lot, if you run
Elite Guardmage
, but it is a prime target for removal and it can end up being a 3 mana do-nothing card, since there are so many good cmc 1 flyers already. I guess it opens up some kind of 4-color
Kaalia, Zenith Seeker
deck, but this is not it.
I wish I could play 4 of
Spell Pierce
or
Wizard's Retort
, but it's just too situational, especially when your opponent manages to resolve
Teferi, Time Raveler
, like after you cast your
Empyrean Eagle
. I much prefer
Dovin's Veto
as the only main board counterspell.
Overall I think there are only 2 good ways to build this deck:
-
Play full on flyer aggro with tons of little creatures, no
Elite Guardmage
and little to no interaction. Means accepting that you'll lose to
Cry of the Carnarium
and other boardwipes a lot, but if you can get
Sephara, Sky's Blade
down before your opponent starts murdering your creatures, you win, especially as long as
Siren Stormtamer
is in the format to protect Sephara. This version has power, but a severe weakness to interaction. Also this version will become much weaker once
Favorable Winds
rotates.
-
Almost-mono-blue tempo, where you play the basic
Curious Obsession
game plan with
Pteramander
and tons of counterspells. Here you'll have to accept that you're going to lose to
Teferi, Time Raveler
,
Chandra, Awakened Inferno
and
Chandra, Novice Pyromancer
. This version doesn't have as much power, but a lot of control potential, much like the basic mono blue tempo deck.
I'd like to build a version that does both things well, but combining them lowers both the deck's power/speed and the reliability of your control plan. If only
Spellstutter Sprite
were in Standard ...
