Sweet budget deck. Seems like a lot of fun!

About Pyromancer's Goggles: This card is really nice if you have many many red cards in deck, however, you only have 9 targets for the goggles of which only 4 to 5 are worth being copied and those cards won't make a huge game difference (except Ultimatum of course)

I'd rather suggest Dictate of Erebos for this deck since it's quite budgety and super effective! Phyrexian Delver or Body Snatcher are also great additions. Just cheat your creatures in instead of casting them. I would also play Outpost Siege or Impact Tremors (maybe also Blood Artist so every flickering is gonna have even more value. Some Sac Outlets like Goblin Bombardment or Ashnod's Altar can also help triggering your commanders ability and have nice synergies with the edict for example. Hope this helps!

"If you have a good ETB creature or a clever way of dealing with tokens I'd love to hear it. Thanks!"

Here are some creatures that came to mind that have clever ETB triggers. They may not exactly be within your budget, but can be good to keep in mind if they come up for a trade:

  • Rune-Scarred Demon - can provide all your tutoring needs for each flicker

  • Noxious Gearhulk - can be removal on a stick as long as you flicker him

  • Vial Smasher the Fierce - as you cast spells he can passively smack someone in the face. I'll admit I have a bias when it comes to this little guy though, as I run him in one of my own decks. But he's fun none the less.

So when it comes to dealing with tokens, the first idea I had was Engineered Explosives for 0. That is a tailor made approach right there. But is rather pricey. So the following are other possibilities within your budget:

  • Crater Hellion - within your theme of ETB creatures, and kills all tokens toughness 4 or lower.

  • Ratchet Bomb - within budget, and can kill all tokens when you don't tap it to add counters.

  • Sever the Bloodline - potentially reusable within your deck, as it has good sorcery and instant recursion.

Hope these suggestions help. Also, very cool concept for a deck. So it gets a +1 from me.

Hey the deck looks pretty fun, here's some ideas for re-animation that brings them straight to the battlefield rather than your hand so you can get the ETB effect.

Dance of the Dead

Twilight's Call

Champion of Stray Souls

Diabolic Servitude

also for dealing with tokens the card you recommended for my deck, Sever the Bloodline seems like it could do rather well in yours as well.

ScrOuch Thanks for leaving some feedback for me!

Good call on the Phyrexian Delver it's been really strong.

Body Snatcher isn't a great flicker target, though if i run more sac outlets it might be better.

Dictate of Erebos isn't quite budget enough for me, I really like that the entire deck is under $50. This way when folks see it play out i can tell them the idea and that the deck could be upgraded as well

Outpost Siege is right on theme though i'm not sure what to cut for it

I think Impact Tremors is possibly win more? I'm not heavy in tokens and if i'm combo'ing with Peregrine Drake i should be able to win another way.

Blood Artist doesn't trigger on flickers, but it is a good card and in multiplayer games creatures die and i'll get value. I think I want to commit to the theme of flicker over good stuff additions right now though

Goblin Bombardment and Ashnod's Altar are good though i'm not to sure they will be strong enough if i don't add the dictate. Also the commander isn't the focus of the deck so adding things just for him seems loose IMO

LVL_666 Thanks for all your suggestions! Lets dive in,

Rune-Scarred Demon is out of budget range. It's not that I don't have it, I do, I just want to run the entire deck under $50. So that means missing out on Dictate of Erebos and the demon but adding Dreamscape Artist and Sire of Stagnation

Noxious Gearhulk I think i want to add, even with the price tag$. All my creature kill now can't kill black creatures and I kinda want more life gain and this card works on both levels. What's better though, Noxious Gearhulk or Inferno Titan???

Vial Smasher the Fierce dosen't fit the theme and is almost a good stuff addition, so I'll pass for now.

Crater Hellion, Ratchet Bomb and Sever the Bloodline are sweet anti token measures, here is what i was thinking Devastation Tide. It deals with the tokens, enchantments, planswalkers, and other unbeatable positions I could find myself in. What do you think?

quitrage Thanks for the bringing some sweet ideas to the table

Dance of the Dead I want to add, though i'm not sure i can think of the cut for it, any thoughts?

Twilight's Call, Champion of Stray Souls and Diabolic Servitude I've played before and didn't really like them. Those were different decks though, so I'll keep them in mind while playing this one.

This deck looks like a fantastic budget build! I really like what you've done with the deck.

I will say that you don't seem to have much draw, and that your mass removal seems so-so. I would suggest Blasphemous Act or Toxic Deluge over Extinguish All Hope, and Rhystic Study or possibly Compulsive Research over Secrets of the Golden City.

In answer to your specific questions: I would run Notion Thief over Sire of Stagnation, Duplicant over either Inferno Titan OR Noxious Gearhulk (unless you really need the life), and honestly I'd run both of those draw spells in this deck mostly likely.

Also, Massacre Wurm would love a home here to obliterate those pesky token decks :)

I know several of those suggestions are a bit over your price range, but you can probably pull out a few other expensive cards to maintain the budget ;)

Daedalus19876 Thanks for the suggestions and upvote!

With regard to your suggestions about mass removal, Extinguish All Hope is much worse than both your suggestions but it's also like 300% cheaper for a similar effect. I also have a fair amount of spot removal to contain people till Thrax can start edicting them.

I'm still hoping for the day my Gonti, Lord of Luxury hits an opponents Rhystic Study and I get to play $10 cards in my budget deck lol.

Do you think Compulsive Research is better than Secrets of the Golden City? I rarely want to discard lands and hitting a land drop every turn is kinda like grixis's version of mana ramp. I'm still going back and forth about taking out Sign in Blood for secrets.

Duplicant I don't think is that much better than Noxious Gearhulk, life gain is relevant most times and if i need to exile something i can usually be tricky about it and get it done.

Right now i have 5 cards in the deck that cost more than $2. Phyrexian Reclamation, Noxious Gearhulk, Sol Ring, Draining Whelk and Rite of Replication. Do you think any of these cards aren't pulling the (dollar) weight?

I really appreciate your thoughts and would be interested in debating some card choices with you!!

Daedalus19876 says... #8

hoardofnotions: Personally, I really like Compulsive Research, because I suspect you will not hit Ascend until the late-game, and it digs deeper than Secrets of the Golden City (with less color commitment) for a counter etc when you really need one.

Of the expensive cards you listed, I don't think that Rite of Replication will do enough to justify its inclusion, personally. I might actually swap Panharmonicon in, TBH. Beyond that, I'm unsure on Phyrexian Reclamation here, but that would require playtesting...

Again, great deck! I'd love to hear your thoughts on some of my decks as well if you have a moment :)

i guess i would just suggest Turnabout

I_TappedWrong says... #11

also Cloud of Faeries is a cheaper Peregrine Drake

I_TappedWrong says... #12

i really think Garna, the Bloodflame would shine in this deck as well. sorry for all the comments i just like the deck and im building a non budget version.

May 25, 2018 9:12 a.m.

I_TappedWrong first of all thanks for taking the time to upvote and comment. I love talking about this deck, it has been performing very well.

I have a question about Turnabout, what would I be using it for? I normally see turnabout as a combo card, but I don't have any of the pieces to combo with. It just seems out of place with what I'm currently doing, but I wanna hear why you thought it'd be good.

Cloud of Faeries is a cheaper cmc card but doesn't make infinite mana when combo'd with deadeye, or ghostly flicker + izzet chronarch. Is there another reason I should be running the card?

Garna, the Bloodflame is a super cool card I can't wait to use, though I'm not sure this is the deck I want it in. What would it be replacing? Phyrexian Delver I think is better the majority of the time.

I really like debating card choices, if you want to explain your thoughts a little more I'm down to talk more about my favorite deck :)

May 26, 2018 1:43 p.m.

I_TappedWrong says... #14

Actually you are pretty much running the combo for Turnabout any card like Izzet Chronarch and Deadeye Navigator you just need more then 4 mana, you cast turn about say you float 3 mana untap all your lands, flicker izzet chronarch with deadeye grab turnabout again cast it float 3 mane do it over and over again infinite mana..

Cloud of faeries was a mistake got ahead of my self on that one.

Garna is just a nice way to recoup after a board wipe, delver is always nice but it's nice to have a good solid way to not care about a board wipe.

May 26, 2018 9:52 p.m.

Wow so cool. +1 all day. Its too bad you cant use Nicol Bolas, the Ravager  Flip as your commander would be a perfect fit. I like the Garna, the Bloodflame idea suggested above.

Can't help but feel this could use some more hard removal; Dreadbore, Terminate, Doom Blade, and also... have you considered a different commander? Arguably stronger here would be Crosis, the Purger, given his ability to starve the opponents of resources rather than just probably stopping creatures after they hit the board.

October 5, 2018 12:52 a.m.

I_TappedWrong Thanks for explaining the combo. I like it! but i'm not sure i'll be able to fit Turnabout in on the budget. If i have extra room one day it'll be on the drawing floor though.

bradtheimpaler13 Thanks! The new Nicol is pretty sweet, I just died to the ultimate of it the other day lol. I like the idea of Garna, the Bloodflame as well, just finding cuts is rough. If you have a card that you think is weak please let me know!

Cicjose I appreciate the suggestion, but my thought process is that i want cards that are good in mulitplayer. Cursing one player, even with a devestating effect, isn't as much value as dealing with all of my opponents stuff. So i'm not sure cruel reality has a place in the list right now.

TuckerMTG This is a great suggestion! I added the marsh and Sunscorched Desert for my Dualcaster Mage + Ghostly Flicker combo. Thanks!

ZendikariWoi I agree that hard removal is slightly lacking, though i do run a lot of the Fleshbag Marauder effects and a couple Ravenous Chupacabra type cards. If i could fit in Terminate in on the budget i think i would. the cool thing about Thraximundar is that he's immediate board impact due to haste and the edict. Also i try to play him as a 3 hit kill with commander damage a lot of the time. I might swap him out one of these days to see how Crosis would handle the helm, but I'm really liking what Nasty Thraxy is offering right now.

I appreciate all the comments and sorry I didn't respond sooner. If anyone would like to discuss their thoughts more or suggest other cards I would love it!!

Hi hoardofnotions,

Thanks for the comments on Spirits Wall.

What do you guys use to value your decks? We use Deckstats.net Un-FLICKING-believable!!!!!!!!!! Deck. $60.82 - Basic Lands $1.10 = $59.72. We always found TCGPlayer.com (Sidebar) was always missing cards (Caution triangle), and was so variable made it unpleasant. Interested to know what you guys settled on.

Rakdos Charm in all honesty is not the best, but it is modular (graveyard protection), and it kills a go-wide token strategy that you indicated to have issues with. Also, or alternatively, you can run board clearing, like Chandra's Ignition or Whipflare.

Ontop of Dualcaster Mage + Ghostly Flicker + Piranha Marsh, Archaeomancer + Peregrine Drake also work.Animate Dead + Worldgorger Dragon can also, but he is high risk. Maybe some additional Tutors to consistently get the Ghostly Flicker.

Rite of Replication + Dualcaster Mage / Naru Meha, Master Wizard is infinite Wizards (Don't even need to kick it). Rite of Replication is good on it's own too, especially with all the ETB's you run. Add a Gray Merchant of Asphodel and that's a win-con (unless the opponent is playing heavy life gain), does 60 damage to each opponent ( x 6 Gray Merchant of Asphodel + 5 triggers) by itself, and you gain 180 life.

I see the mana fixing in the base, but so many tapped lands can slow you down too much. May overcome this with the ramp?

Dinrova Horror I understand he can be a powerhouse, and recurring him makes him good, but High CMC, and can't target yourself (efficiently anyway).

Dreamscape Artist that is a hell of a price to pay, I wouldn't. If it could pull any land maybe, but not basic.

I'm not sure Duplicant is effective enough, and high CMC, for his $ cost in a budget format. There's lots of ETB's to abuse, for sure, he is one of them, but not sure worth it. Would rather have money for a Rite of Replication.

Withered Wretch and Ingot Chewer are ok, but I would rather have a Rakdos Charm, I realize can't flicker them, but those creatures aren't the greatest anyway, and Withered Wretch doesn't benefit from flicker.

I would play but evaluate Discovery / Dispersal, doesn't provide any card advantage, have to see how often it is Surveil a card into the graveyard that you return as a %. If it inconsistently works, I wouldn't run it. If you find your usually recurring the card it throws, or your aggressive enough to dig for a combo piece, might be ok. Hard to evaluate.

Evil Twin (CMC4) can be great, or not. Situational. Same with Memory Plunder, too random, too situational. Difficult to evaluate it's value, I usually stay away from those.

Animate Dead is very high $, again would rather see something like a Rite of Replication in it's place.

Nightscape Familiar is not a terrible ramp, and he has Regenerate, so can block Non-Flample pretty good.

Devastation Tide scares me to, because you probably rebuild your board the slowest (or close to the slowest). I wouldn't want to reset myself, after doing all the ramping work. Might be situational good on occasion, but rarely on a miracle. There is a blue card (not Cyclonic Rift that does opponents stuff, name escapes me now, but it has a very high CMC)

Commit / Memory at CMC4 seems pretty high too. Seems to much, lose the game with it in hand and unable to cast, or saving CMC4 and don't end up using it. Not Flash or anything (other than the copy spell guys) to really utilize the saved mana, or draw, etc. Some with the artifact returns/recur though.

Burnished Hart is really good, I know he doesn't ETB, but if you can recur him, lots of ramping. A little $ expensive too.

Most of your drawing is CMC 3+ which, I understand early turns your playing tapped lands for the most part, so you're slowly moving, then turn 3-5 your trying to draw. You have a couple tutors, but you might get overwhelmed before you can get to it. Luckily in a multi-pod, you'll probably be left alone for a while, but hard to evaluate if your fast enough. Since you restrict to only Tier 4+ commanders, you may have enough time, our league doesn't restrict, just restricts the budget, Animar or Brago, you'd never get ahead of, so you have that going for you!

Cloud of Faeries + Deadeye Navigator + Dimir Aqueduct or Izzet Boilerworks or Rakdos Carnarium does indeed make infinite mana.

Razaketh's Rite is high CMC, but the Cycling makes it playable if drawn in opening rounds.

Sever the Bloodline is great for Horde removal too (or indestructible), or Bile Blight. Not sure how often you see it though, we have 1/1 Snake and 2/2 Wolf and */* Vampire in our league. Tragic Slip too (instant speed).

Murder is a good budget removal too. Can free up some $ with a Dissipate instead of Counterspell.

I like the draw on Illusionist's Stratagem but the CMC4 sucks, it's still good though because it triggers the 2 creatures, which you need.

Custodi Lich is awesome (for the extra draw and the sacrifice), but his $ and his CMC5 make him not budget friendly. Plus he many not even get the target your really want to kill, and sorcery speed. Once the Monarch is on the table, if you don't have a way to take it back, you may actually hurt yourself by giving away card advantage.

Notion Thief is best with Wheel of Fortune type effects, or when you play "all players draw a card" type effects. Not sure if you've found him consistent enough in this flicker type build?

Good deck idea, like the flicker. +1.

Hey! Have you thought about having Jeleva, Nephalia's Scourge as the commander? I think she could work really well as more reliable combo piece for the Dualcaster Mage + Ghostly Flicker combo, then just watch as one by one each player loses the game and since it was just your turn you lose last. Could be risky if someone is able to return something to their library from their graveyard but would also make it all the more fun! Loving the deck, easiest +1 of my life.

Hey MiifUs,

I believe hoardofnotions mentioned the Commander has to be Tier 4 or lower Commander's by Tier. Jeleva, Nephalia's Scourge is Tier 2 looks like, formerly Tier 1 though! Definitely a strong Commander.

Hey, hoardofnotions, AEtherspouts is the removal I was thinking of for budget format, a terrible Cyclonic Rift.
