How budget is this deck? Zurgo doesn't smash the helms, he recycles them for the scrap metal.

Took some pointers from The Commander's Quarters on Youtube and made an ultra budget deck. He likes to do a lot of Voltron deck techs so I figured I'd beat him to Zurgo. This deck comes out to exactly $25 as of the typing of this sentence.

It's pretty straightforward. You ramp into Zurgo and protect/buff him with enchantments.

Gameplan:

There's only 6 actual ramp spells which include the corresponding Signets, Wayfarer's Bauble, Star Compass, Sphere of the Suns, and then there's Renegade Map and Traveler's Amulet. The last 2 don't ramp us per-say, but it's good enough.

I tried to prioritize evasion, but I'm not sure how I did on that. 15 cards give us combinations of unblockable (5), trample (7), or flying (3). Then the next most important thing is keeping Zurgo alive, so I threw in 9 ways to regen, protect from damage, or just return to hand/battlefield upon death. I'm not sure if I overdid this, but I will tweak the deck once I play it more.

To draw into the things we're playing we have: Ambition's Cost, Ancient Craving, Painful Truths, Read the Bones, Skeletal Scrying, Sram, Senior Edificer, and Outpost Siege. All of our outright card draw hurts us, and we don't have much in the way of creatures to block with or spot removal (4 of each) so be aware of that.

I never really liked the idea of enchanting commanders, but there are some really cool auras out there.

Cool Interactions:

Shade's Form - Nothing crazy, I just had never seen this card til I started researching the deck lol

Dying Wish - I really like this one, it's a nice form of reach for the deck. Probably not worth the slot, but I imagine its a deterrent cuz Zurgo gets pretty out of hand.

Bestial Fury - It's weird that the trample is conditional, but I like that it comes with a power boost when the conditions are met.

Inquisitor's Flail + Soul Link - This is my favorite interaction. So much so that I really want to try and play around with the idea of forcing creatures to block him. I'm not sure how, or if it's possible with Mardu, but it seems like a lot of fun.

Sadistic Glee or Eternal Thirst + boardwipes/kill spells - I was real close to just going kill spell/boardwipe heavy to try and pay those enchantments off but that's kinda silly. For the most part these enchantments just get double value out of chump blockers but I think they can put in some decent work for us in terms of growing Zurgo.

Arcbond - This is my classic Zurgo card. No trample? No problem. Just force that damage thru anyways lol. Ppl don't usually see this one coming for some reason, and it makes for really fun blowouts.

Yea that's it. It seems trivial now that I'm looking at what I got excited over, but oh well lol. I'm a simple kind of man.

Final Thoughts:

Equipment has gotten a lot more expensive since I built my original Zurgo deck, a lot of the equipment I got for under a dollar is solidly over one now. You could probably beef up this deck pretty well for only like $10 more. But that's up to you. Thanks for reading my rambling, have fun Magic-ing.
