Ultra-Budget Legacy Elves

Legacy

Zauberer

Description

This is here to help those who want to play Legacy Elves, but aren't able to dump a ton of money on the mana base right away. With this list, you can play ball, and then upgrade over time until you do eventually get there. You won't be winning GPs with this list, but you can take it to FNM, have some fun, and at least get a feel for the deck and the format.

The Maybeboard contains your upgrade path. As you are able, I recommend acquiring cards in the following order. With this path, you'll see a noticeable power boost with each upgrade, while eventually ending up with a full-power Legacy deck.

  1. -4 Forest, +4 Windswept Heath
  2. -2 Elvish Mystic, +2 Deathrite Shaman
  3. -3 Forest, +3 Wooded Foothills
  4. -1 Llanowar Elves, +1 Deathrite Shaman
  5. -1 Forest, +1 Overgrown Tomb
  6. -1 Forest, +1 Dryad Arbor
  7. -2 Forest, +2 Cavern of Souls
  8. -1 Shaman of the Pack, +1 Leovold, Emissary of Trest
  9. -2 Priest of Titania, -1 Umbral Mantle, +3 Crop Rotation
  10. -1 Abrupt Decay , -1 Mindbreak Trap, +1 Karakas, +1 Bojuka Bog
  11. -1 Umbral Mantle, +1 Gaea's Cradle
  12. -1 Forest, +1 Bayou
  13. -1 Llanowar Elves, +1 Dryad Arbor (OPTIONAL)
  14. -1 Priest of Titania, +1 Gaea's Cradle
  15. -1 Overgrown Tomb, +1 Bayou
  16. -2 Faerie Macabre , +2 Surgical Extraction (OPTIONAL)
  17. -1 Forest, +1 Savannah (OPTIONAL)
  18. -1 Priest of Titania, -1 Crop Rotation, + 2 Gaea's Cradle (OPTIONAL)

This will leave you with a fairly stock list- so don't be afraid of spicing it up a bit! Legacy is a format with over 16,000 cards in it. If you're running into problems somewhere, don't be afraid to swap stuff out. Hell, the initial build runs an infinite combo to help make up for the power loss.

Leovold ruining your day? Swap the Elvish Visionaries for Coiling Oracles. Their ETB gets around Leovold, while potentially also ramping your mana. They're harder to cast, though, so it is a tradeoff.

Tired of not being able to do anything about Delvers  Flip, Marit Lage, and Griselbrand? Try Silkweaver Elite . With a Wirewood Symbiote , she can block them all for days, and does a pretty good Elvish Visionary impression, too.

Narnam Renegade does good work keeping reality smashers at bay.

The initial build includes the Priest of Titania + Umbral Mantle combo, which can go off as early as turn 3. Here's how it works.

  1. Equip it to Priest of Titania. Including opposing elves, if there are at least 3 on the field, she'll generate enough mana to untap herself infinitely, resulting in an infinite/infinite Priest. With 4 or more, she'll also generate infinite mana.
  2. Floating infinite mana, tap three elves with Heritage Druid. Equip Umbral Mantle to each of them and use its ability to untap and give +2/+2.
  3. Repeat Step 2 until every elf is sitting at infinite/infinite.
  4. If you have more attackers than they have blockers, or if you can give them trample with Craterhoof Behemoth, you win. If not, you'll still wreck their board state and can have untapped creatures going into their turn.

This is great, but shouldn't the original list have like one woodland cemetary or swamp to cast shaman of the pack/use DRS activated ability? Also the sideboard.

My thinking was that Birchlore Rangers would cover black mana requirements and Green Sun's Zenith can fetch it- I felt reliably getting an untapped land that makes black would add too much to the initial cost.

But of course, there's no need to copy this list exactly- if you, for instance, already own Blooming Marshes and Gilt-Leaf Palaces, then by all means go nuts and use 'em.

Hi! Thanks for posting this! It's very useful.

I've been trying to figure out what I could put together for a while now. I have a G/B Modern Elves deck now and I think I could convert it into a budget Legacy Chaos Elves deck fairly easily. Here's my current idea...if you have time and could take a look, I'd love to hear what you think!

I'm only missing a few creatures from the list. I have a playset of Caverns if that seems useful. I don't have any fetches, but I think using Crop Rotation might work for replacing some of those. I only have 1 Cradle, so that'll have to do for now. Basically, I only need to get a playset of Glimpse and 3x GSZ if I don't run Natural Order. I have the G/B lands from my Modern deck, so I can use them or go back to Forests.

Anyway, just an idea I've been working on. Thanks again!
