Ugin Red — Modern under $200

EXOSURE

Like winning with dragons and planeswalkers?

Like making big plays every turn and landing Skred for 10 million on their fatty? Look no further, boyo. With Koth of the Hammer and other mana accelerants, you can get out Ugin, the Spirit Dragon as early as turn 4 and start wrecking face. But this deck isn't just all-in jank; this is a robust, interaction-heavy mono-red shell that can quickly establish a threatening board presence with or without Ugin. And to top it all off, it's a relatively cheap, modern-legal deck. Let's get into it!

If you like the deck and think it's original, please help a brother out by leaving a +1 and a comment.

4x Koth of the Hammer

This is pretty much the star of the show. At worst, he's a 4/4 haste for 4; at his best, you can use him to get Ugin out on turn 4. You can also drop him plus another 4-drop on turn 4, and on turn 6 you can drop him plus Ugin. His -5 wins games, period.

1x Chandra, Torch of Defiance

Chandra has abilities that are all super useful. Usually you'll just use her to snipe creatures with her -3, but the mana accel is nice and her first ability is clutch when you're drawing dead.

1x Ugin, the Spirit Dragon

Man, you don't know power until you've played with Ugin. The deck is structured for making his -X as one-sided for you as possible -- just take a look at what percentage of your permanents and tokens are colorless.

4x Hangarback Walker

This is the best creature in the deck for protecting your planeswalkers, since it replaces itself when it dies, and you can play it on 2 the same turn you drop Chandra. It's also not a dead draw late game when you have all that mana.

2x Perilous Myr

This card might seem outright bad, but it's another seriously good blocker that can be accelerated out with Chandra, and it's also a prime sac target for Pia and Kiran Nalaar

3x Pia and Kiran Nalaar

I take it back: this is the best creature in the deck for protecting your creatures. Super useful toolbox card, and it only gets better late game when you have the mana to activate its ability.

2x Stormbreath Dragon

The Game Winner. Seriously, this guy closes out games lightning quick (see what I did there?) with haste and monstrous, and Bolts and Skreds can keep chump blockers out of its path.

3x Mind Stone / 1x Talisman of Impulse

Ah, Mind Stone, the card that makes this deck possible. Since the majority of our impactful plays are 4-drops, a Mind Stone on turn 2 can speed up the deck by a full turn. Late game when you don't need mana, it draws you a card. What's not to love? Sometimes the fact that you can't play a Bolt off a Mind Stone is annoying though, so I swapped one out for a Talisman of Impulse, and that's worked fine for me.

4x Chromatic Star

This is straight up deck slimming, and it fixes the mana produced by Mind Stone nicely. It's also far and away the best artifact in the deck to sac and gives you something to do turn 1. But most of the time it's just a Cycling card. Having these in the deck helps you find Ugin a significantly higher percentage of games.

4x Lightning Bolt / 4x Skred

Need anything be said? What's a red deck without cheap burn?

2x Slagstorm

Sometimes, the board just needs clearing. This is superior to Anger of the Gods, as it doesn't exile your Hangarback Walkers and Perilous Myrs, and the player damage mode can be used to close out games.

EDIT: Slagstorm has been replaced by Anger of the Gods, as Anger of the Gods is key in many important matchups such as Dredge, CoCo, etc.

1x Kuldotha Rebirth

A surprise addition to the deck! This card is a really nice tool both offensively and defensively, as it establishes a clock versus control and protects your planeswalkers versus aggro, and none of the artifacts in the deck hate being sacrificed too much.

24x Snow-Covered Mountain

This really shouldn't come as too much of a shock: you need a mono-snow-covered-mountainbase to make full usage of Koth and Skred, the centerpieces of the deck. This deck hates missing land drops, thus the 24 lands.
