MTG Deck Builder

U/G Savaged Stalker

Description

alt textThis is somewhat of a mid-range deck that uses the sheer power of increasing savagery to beat your opponent to a bloody pulp without them getting much say in the matter. The main creatures off the deck are invisible stalker and predator ooze which once turned savage are 6/6 beatdown creatures. Wolfir or a flashback savagery is usually the finishing move, because most decks aren't equipped with a way to deal with an 11/11 unblockable or more. Every once in a while a stalker will take a little too long to show its face, but that just means u can use the more demeaning way of killing them by hitting them in the face with a 5/6 bird. The main way that opponents get the upper hand is decks like U/B zombies that are just so freakin fast(but there are still definitely ways to get the upper hand after a while) or anything with mass removal, but then right after the board sweep u just drop something cheap ( or already have an ooze out because it is indestructible) and flashback a savagery. There usually isnt much they can do to come back from that.alt text

B/R Vampires: 2-1

He was very aggressive but his speed was absolutely no match for me. Game 1 I destroyed him on turn 4 with a dumbfounded look on his face as a stalker with a rancor and savagery on it hit him for the win. The only win he got was because I kept a hand on the hopes that any of the 3 ponders in my hand would get me what I needed, which obviously didn't happen.

U/W Control: 0-2

I really don't know what happened. At one point we both got to 14 lands and still had done nothing. Then when I could finally do something he had stockpiled enough counters to last him a lifetime. I don't even remember what he used to kill me I was so flustered.

White Weenies/Humans: 2-0

She had to use absolutely everything as chump blockers just to try to survive. Ooze was an absolute monster against her. I even killed her with a bird first game.

Mono-Green Infect: 1-2

just such a rediculous deck. Rancor and Mutagenic Growth really do their work.

G/R Werewolves: 2-1

First game for some reason it did the weird pretty much all lands thing again so that was just pure luck for him( so irritating. I have no idea why it did that twice that night. It had to be completely bad luck because I've never had flooding problems before) . Once my deck was pile shuffled a couple times it ran correctly. I absolutely slaughtered him after that. Last game was my proudest moment of the night when after him stalling twice with moonmist I finally got to swing in with three 2/2 wolfs and a predator ooze with a savagery, flashbacked savagery, rancor, and wolfir pairing on it, all coming out to a 23/21 indestructable trampler.

Got some awesome trades, pulled a Tamiyo out of one of my packs, had alot of fun, and took 7th place out of 21. All in all a good night.

PLEASE STOP SUGGESTING SNAPCASTER. I AM WELL AWARE THAT IT IS A GOOD CARD BUT I DONT HAVE THE MONEY FOR IT AND IT DOESN'T REALLY DO MUCH WORK IN THIS ANYWAYS.

FNM results — July 28, 2012

So tonight was a small group. There was only 8 people, making it only 3 rounds. I got 3rd, which i would have gotten at least 2nd if my final matchup wasn't so bad, but anyways, here are my results:

U/W Humans: 2-0He was stuck on the defensive the whole time. I had stalker smaking him in the face for 6 every turn, and as soon as he finally thought he had room to get in some damage with his mirran crusader I just snagged it and hit for the win next turn. I think he did about 4 damage between the games. lol

B/G Infect: 2-0Rancor did look like it might actually prove amazing in infect before I saw it actually working. I just leaked any flyers and snagged anything that was about to hit for anything. He had me at 2 infect g1 and 6 g2, but I was never really worried. First game was won with just flashing back savagery on stalker and hitting for 16 without him being able to do anything, and game 2 was won with him at 9 life with a phyrexian crusader out and having two wolfirs coming at him each for at least 10 ( I think one was 10 and the other 16 or something like that, but I can't remember for sure). Wolfir Silverheart was def. his undoing because nothing could get past them and then I would just replenish their strength the turn after blocking.

U/B Zombies/Blood Artist: 0-2This was my friend, who always does extremely well, and this deck is so insane against me( he got 1st). It's just so freakin aggro that I can't do anything about it, pretty much all his removal is sac based ( so my hexproof and indestructability don't mean so much to him) and then the most annoying part is he killed me off g1 with a killing wave for x=0. So then he just sac'd all his creatures, pinging me with blood artist for 7 ( which I had 6 left). Both games I was going to win the turn after but I just can't seem to get a break.

All in all, It wasn't bad. I had fun. If I had been paired with anyone else that last game I was fairly confident I was taking first. It's great the transition that happened a few months ago when my zombie-playing friend up there ( who got me into the game) stopped giving me any chances and has been full-on trying to destroy me because I stopped being his casual magic friend once this deck got up to its full potential and I became so much of a better player that if he doesn't go at me with his all he knows I'll take the opportunity and win.

alt text So if you thought of a suggestion for my replacement for delver, me and some friends already figured it out. Its going to be 3x Mayor of Avabruck instead of the 3 delvers(ive gotten 2 of them so far and the last delver will go out as soon as i get one more). Delver often went unflipped and was just a dead draw late game. Mayor pumps stalker and itself(multiple copies) and when flipped just makes wolfir just a little more fun. Oh and garruk then becomes better than primal hunter in every way because the only things it does better are its finisher and its tokens(3/3s instead of 2/2s) but the finisher would never happen in standard anyways.

This deck def needs to have no deliver in it but I've seen your description. So I really think its def a lethal deck in standard fnm have you played with it fnm wise or just with friends? Also if you like throwing the counters on the invisible and indistructable have you considered blessings of nature, travel preparations, and maybe 1-2 revenge of the hunted or spectral flight, or rancors :) the only problem is that travel preparations flashback is white so that wouldn't really fit but great card though so great deck And +1 from me

Yes, I have played this at fnms 2-3 times now. It is my first fnm deck (except it started out as a proliferation deck with primordial hydra, thrummingbird, and ludevic's test subject in it which didn't go quite so well once I played against fnm players and not my friends but man was it good around the kitchen table) and the two I went to when it was closer to this type of build there was a 6 round and a 5 round one and I went 3-3 and 3-2(and thats while the build wasnt very good yet and i didnt have such a good sb). I have thought about all of those but have declined using all of them except im still thinking about rancor. Blessings is just a clunkier savagery, because even though it can be miracled, it is quite often not, and then its just a weaker, more costly card. I want to be dropping savagery on a stalker turn 3 or 4 and that pretty much wont happen. Also if its miracled I have to use it right then and sometimes my board has been swept or something and then its a very annoying draw. I thought about preperations but i wouldnt be able to do the flashback and it just would be very much, as well as the fact that it is a two drop in a deck thats main creature is a two drop. I don't feel like describing why i didnt use them all but savagery is what i came to the conclusion should be the only thing used. Thanks for the comment and the feedback! Oh and the +1 definitely!

I would suggest Elbrus, the Binding Blade  Flip getting a 13/13 demon is jsut great and if you play the deck casual then just let someone die and your win.

elbrus is great for casual..... thats about it. This is my fnm deck and it would be horrible to play a 7 cost in a for the most part 6 turn maximum game format. Elbrus is more of an edh card. Thanks for the +1 and the comment though!

I think you could scratch out the 2 Mayor of Avabruck  Flip s, and the Delver of Secrets  Flip . With few humans the mayor's boost won't be worth it, and delver is unlikely to flip, and as a 1 of I'm just unsure about it. 2-3 swords would be awesome here, but I don't think they're worth it with them rotating out so soon and being so expensive. Another good option is Rancor . Or maybe Sleep or something. . . But probably Rancor . Maybe Hunger of the Howlpack . Or another Dungeon Geists . Whatever you think will work for your strategy. I guess if the mayor works good go for it, but just by looking at it I'm thinking other options would be better. Trample from Rancor would make your ooze just plain nasty.

Rancor is deff a must +2/+0 and trample for 1 green? Also, Snapcaster Mage possible to use on Increasing Savagery for 4 mana flashback vs 7..., only one less mana to do that but can still come in handy for Vapor Snag s or Ponder s too.

July 21, 2012 1:45 a.m.

I already have thought of if the mayors aren't paying off well enough, I will go 1 strangleroot geist 2 rancor instead. Right now they seem to be working but that change is still a possibility. Snapcaster is way out of my price range.

July 21, 2012 3:12 a.m.

The above comment is going to happen. I don't think mayor is cutting it. As soon as I get the cards it'll happen.

Yeah those mayor's are wasted space IMO better fit for a Snapcaster Mage :D I need to get 2-3 myself for my U/G delver deck.

Look up the UG Spirits deck Sam Black pilotted at pro tour barcelona. They have a deck tech on it, and it gives an inside look on the deck. This is for block though, so make some switches where they should be made.

i cAn HaS BAd CapiTAliZaTiON?

And 4 wolfir, always 4.

I don't have birds :/ or more then two silver hearts or more then two increasing savagery but yeah I like this deck a lot and I've actually commented on this deck a while ago . That's funny cuz I had a delver and dungrove deck but didn't work so I turned to delved and stalker but your deck is still monster if you get even a lil bit of a rush on the opponent with stalker and increasing savagery :) you could also use mwonvuli tracker instead of the mayor but then again that's 1gg to play even though you can dig for your stalker . Good seeing this deck again I think I might add two of the strangle root Geist to my deck idk maybe predator ooze hmm

Have you tried Dungrove Elder in this deck? With 12 Forest s, I feel like a Hexproof creature that gets bigger with most of your lands may be useful. Snapcaster Mage has been mentioned and it may have some use but I feel like it wouldn't be useful that often. I feel like Garruk Relentless  Flip is a bit much as a 3x and probably shouldn't be in the sideboard. Also, Garruk, Primal Hunter may be useful in this deck, 3/3 beasts and the ability to draw a great deal of cards might help if you are forced into a late game.

This is a deck that is all to familiar to me. This deck almost seems to be a copy, with a few minor adjustments of course, of Gaudenis Vidugiris' deck that he used in Pro Tour Avacyn Restored. Bye the way, he lost to Alexander Hayne. Proving that miricles are more effective in the long run. It is still a fantastic deck regardless and I give you props because I like the adjustments.

August 2, 2012 7:19 p.m.

I never saw that deck but actually a guy at our fnm tried out hayne's deck and found that it doesn't translate well into standard( compared to block constructed) and didnt even place. I didn't get to play him but he only played it at one event because it was that bad, where as I've top 8'd twice with this, one of which it wasn't quite at this level, and I've only been to 3 fnms ( the first time it was a proliferate deck). Pretty funny that a semi-new player like me is building decks like a pro tour player though. Thanks for the view!

i like the deck alot. something about a big fat unblock-able hexproof that makes me all giddy inside. in the play testing. your mana base is good. but i dont know about the Predator Ooze three green can be hard to get right every time. and it seems to me like that is just a distraction like "look at me, look at me!" while the stalker sneaks in and assassinates your opponent in the nude. which i think is fantastic. another creature with the same "look at me" type of characteristics is the Primordial Hydra . it might be a little easier to play in fact. another card i would consider is Artful Dodge that might be a good substitute for your Vapor Snag when that goes out. and then one more small thing the Prey Upon is very lonely and feels like the red head step kid that sites oddly in the corner. with only a 11% chance of getting it and only the Predator Ooze and Wolfir Silverheart that you would use it with, it feels a little late gameish. i would substitute the Prey Upon for a Rancor , that way you have more stability and you can almost predict what your going to get. but a +1 from me. i will definitely look into running this deck soon very cool :D

Eh. If it's ever going to go casual. Gilder Bairn is quite slow and ineffective. Don't get me wrong I love Gilder Bairn, its just not good enough for what I face.

Suggestion:-1 Prey Upon-2 Rancor-1 Forest+1 Dungeon Geist+3 Mayor of Avabruck

I see what you are trying to do with Prey Upon... but it's not that good of removal. Also I feel more Mayors makes a better contribution than having 2 Rancor to pump creatures.

I like playing more than 20/40, but I feel more utility is gained from an extra geist mainboard than the 22nd land.

How does Garruk, the Veil-Cursed  Flip  Flip help you? Love the deck. Simple, but awesome :P. +1.

September 16, 2012 3:42 p.m.

He just gives blockers and takes out troublsome 1or2 defense creatures, and then the deathtouch tokens scare alot of decks cuz they really don't want to have to slam right into them and the tutoring ability is always nice cuz it let's me pull out a wolfir and slap it on stalker for the win. Another great thing is that it always let's me do something If my draws are horrible.

September 16, 2012 4:31 p.m.

No. The ultimate is useless. I dont think youshould ever base the use of a planeswalker off of it's ultimate cuz that barely happens even in control builds.
