This is my take on UB Mill for modern. After the banning of Hogaak this strategie got a little better but is still tier 2. It's a pet deck of mine since I just love to mill people out, great fun for an fnm.

Good at disrupting combo decks, weak against heavy aggro but that's where the sideboard comes in. The printing of Drown in the Loch was just the little edge needed for the deck to be more versatile and now finally has a viable counterspell.

Sideboard clarification

Burn is one of the worst match ups for the deck so the following cards are an auto include in my oppinion:

• Leyline of Sanctity
• Collective Brutality
• Crypt Incursion

Collective Brutality and Crypt Incursion can also be in your mainboard if there is a lot of Burn in your meta. Ensnaring Bridge also profits from 3 Collectives instead of 2 so there are some choices to be made.

For other heavy aggro lists like Humans or Goblins we have the following package:

• Plague Engineer
• Damnation
• Crypt Incursion

If you are playing black, there is almost no excuse for not playing Plague Engineer. You could run Bontu's Last Reckoning instead of Damnation but I don't like the fact that your lands don't untap.

Graveyard/combo strategies can also be a hard match up since we do the work for them:

• Grafdigger's Cage
• Surgical Extraction
• Extirpate

The Cage is mainly against the remaining dredge strategies (I still encounter them) and Neoform combo decks. The Exterpates and Surgical extractions are mainly there against the Urza combo decks that also utilize the Thopter/Sword combo, in this case Extirpate is way better than Surgical.

Lastly on of the worst cards we can fase is ironicly; Leyline of Sanctity so the following cards are also a must in main or sideboards of Mill:

• Echoing Truth
• Set Adrift

Without these cards you can just scoop against any deck that plays a leyline turn 0 or manages to hardcast one.
