I have been playing pauper tournaments in my local store for almost 2 years now.

always preferred brewing my own decks than using premade-list.

Pauper, to some extent, lets you try new brews (despite some card just being to good not to auto-include them)

This is my HOMEBREW on a UB mill based around Jace Erasure

I call it...

THE DRAW MILL

One of the things I most enjoyed was each week improving the deck more and more with each playtest. Hence in the sections below ill try to comment about cards that I used to play, and how they got replaced for others and why.

  • Grisly Spectacle added before I tried the format, looked great in paper, but resulted to be too expensive and creatures rarely get over 5 toughness (I am looking at you angler ¬¬)

  • Hieroglyphic Illumination Considered for its versatility of cycle on early and drawing on late

  • Think Twice This got replaced by the match powerful accumulated knowledge

  • Curse of the Bloody Tome deck used to have 4 of these, in the end I opted for more control and board pressence and aim to just mill with jace erasure.

  • Oona's Grace early builds had one copy to cycle lands with retrace. Seeker of insight ended doing that job much better.

  • Pilfered Plans , Psychic Strike , Induce Paranoia : These cards despite being able to do something and milling, are just to costly for pauper. (its hard to compete with the other draw and counterspells when yours cost more.

  • Ash Barrens ended up being one of the cards i most liked in Pauper, gives you fixing, the change to use it as colorless as needed and also thins your deck out if you search for a land.

  • The Preordain vs Brainstorm dilemma. Came back and forth about which one was better for the deck. with the last addition of ash barrens and the seekers its easy to shuffle or discard away unwanted cards. hence I am currently running brainstorm x4

  • The Gurmag Angler dilemma. Tried my best not to include this bacl autoinclude pauper card, but finally desisted. He cn appear in an early hand where I mill myself for a quick turn drop or appear later on the game to stop attacker on the spot.

  • Compulsive Research was used in the deck for some time, mainly for the 3 draw triggers and usually finding a land to discard. Lately I have been trying one copy of Gush and Tragic Lesson . its one less draw trigger but they are instant speed.

  • Crypt Incursion one of the best cards in the deck, and ALWAYS unexpected. Used to run 3 copies, but its useless against token spells or few creature decks. Tend to have a third copy in the sideboard, since against any aggro deck it usually mean I gain +40 life and get way out of range.

  • Diabolic Edict before you say anything, chainer´s edict ain't always better. If I can cast that flashback cost, I have already controlled my opponent and will mill him for the win. Diabolic gives me the possibility to kill in response to a pump that RUINS combo/pump decks. used to run x4 as main (specially because of boogles) but replaced them for Agony Warp and Disfigure for being able to target.
