UB Delver Tempo! (ft. Maralen of the Mornsong)

Modern Budget Control Tempo UB (Dimir)

apohl13

This deck is heavily influenced by SeekerofSecrets' deck Maralen Manson, with the same basic idea, just different spells.

A good opening hand is usually one or two lands, one or two cantrips, one or two discard spells, and two-ish creatures. If you don't have all of these things, don't worry. As long as you have the land and a couple of cantrips you should be able to find the rest. Obviously, Delver of Secrets   is our #1 priority if its in our opening hand. If we can get it to flip on turn two, it becomes our primary win condition. Because the card Thought Scour exists, a turn 3 Tasigur, the Golden Fang or Gurmag Angler is an everyday occurrence.

As soon as you have one or two beaters on the board, you want to play Maralen of the Mornsong and have a Dispel or Countersquall in hand and enough lands untapped to play your counterspell. This is to prevent your opponent from immediately tutoring up removal and destroying Maralen of the Mornsong. This is the lock that will then win you the game, as you keep smashing face with your beaters and Lightning Bolting their face on their upkeep. If Tasigur, the Golden Fang is in play, you have the added benefit of being able to refill your hand with his ability without actually having to draw cards.

You now have two options. You can keep tutoring counterspells and targeted removal, or you can tutor Mindlock Orb and make it so that people can't play Magic. Your Duress's and Inquisition of Kozileks just got a lot better. :) The second is more fun, but more unreliable unless you already have a counterspell in hand and enough mana to play it. Countersquall is practically built for this deck, as it lets you stop any attempt to disrupt your lock while also draining your opponent to speed up your victory. Either way, if you can establish the lock, you will win 99% of the time.

+1s are appreciated, but please also go leave one on SeekerofSecrets' deck Maralen Manson, as that was the deck that inspired this one.

Thanks!
