The past few weeks (4/17-5/1) + Changes: —May 3, 2015
I've changed the main board and side board to be as versatile as possible. In the past 3 weeks at my local FnM I've been going 3-1 or 4-1. I ended up losing one game to a deck I didn't have any side board tech against. I'm fairly familiar with what kind of decks I'll be facing, but I end up with one odd-ball match up a night at least. I've broadened the card list in the side board to help give me a chance against all sorts of brews.
I went 3-2, 4-1 and 3-1 on the 17th, 24th and 1st respectively at OP2000 Crystal.

Thanks, I've been playing this archetype for a long time. I decided to optimize it down to as many 1 drops as possible. Foul-Tongue Shriek has been working for me and fits my curve nicely.

I'm returning to the game and actually looking to build a deck along the same lines as this one. I mean black is the best color in Magic after all. For a version which would be easier on my wallet, what do you think of replacing Thought seize with 2 Duress and 2 Sign in Blood and also taking out Heroes Downfall for a play set of Ultimate Price and 2 Foul-Tongue Shriek?

Blood-Chin Rager is a very good two drop for the deck. I can help to sneak in those early points of damage through a blocker.
Spiteful Returned is another two drop historically played by this deck. It's ability to sneak in 2 damage, as well as be played turn 2 or 4 is very strong in the deck.
If you can find a place to slide these cards in it will fix your curve, and I think it will make the deck a lot faster and more menacing.

I think rager is better in a warrior-focused shell.
I have used Spiteful Returned in other variants of this build. The problem is that it's a 1/1 body for 2. It's bestow is really good however, I've been trying to find a way to fit him back in. But I like the evasion Master of the Feast and Herald of Torment provide. I haven't had a problem with my curve, as long as I have 2 lands in hand I'm usually golden.

I would recommend the following changes if you wanted to make a budget version of this deck:
-4 thoughtseize
-3 hero's downfall
+1 bile blight
+2 Despise
+2 duress
+2 murderous cut
Despise and Duress will give you want you want Thoughtseize for. run 2 of each mainboard and 2 of each in the sideboard.
Replace Hero's Downfall with Murderous Cut. Murderous cut is a decent enough replacement for downfall, but it hits you for 5 when you Pain Seer and that's why downfall is preferred.
