This is the alternate version of my deck Riot Control [Rakdos Midrange]. I felt that the lifegain provided by Thragtusk and Huntmaster of the Fells Flip as well as the amazing added removal in Abrupt Decay was just too good to pass up.
So this is my brew. There are many like it, but this one is mine.
Still considering rakdos return as my X finisher, but I also feel as though that card is generally best cast T5 for 3.
Earlier versions of this deck ran hand rip, but in testing I found that the current hand rip suite (Appetite for Brains and Duress) is very often lacking in targets. Those were replaced with Pillar of Flame because removal is always awesome, and zombies are going to be a thing for a very long time.
The biggest reason I have Liliana of the Dark Realms in here is because she fixes my mana by T5. I need green, I get green! And she's amazing as a final pusher or clearing the way. Her ultimate goes off (incredibly rarely, most likely against control) and can swoop the game in my favor. Kessig pump for HOW MUCH?! Oh, so good.
To me, Vraska the Unseen 's second ability is really the only worthwhile one. You get one shot off generally, and call it quits. Her third ability is novelty, and never meant to work. (Same with many planeswalkers, including Lili...who ever needs or relies on a PW ultimate?)
I will agree that her second is awesome. If I pull her I might try to put her in here, but she'll likely attempt to be traded for an Abrupt Decay .
Thanks for the +1!
i would suggest at least side-boarding ( i think mainboard) Dreadbore , this card is an amazing piece of removal that should be in any deck running it's colors. realistically this should be better then Abrupt Decay against more decks.
also saying Liliana of the Dark Realms for mana fixing is okay in a EDH deck or other decks but i dont think mana problems would be an issue with the multitude of mana rocks, shock lands and M13 lands. I mean you could even just replace her with Farseek (if she is just for mana fixing).
I'm sure that that is possible, Vraska the Unseen does seem like she could be good, but for now I'll stand beside my initial conclusion that her second ability will be the only reason for this deck to run her. And honestly, I've got enough permanent destruction, anything under 3 CMC and any creature. That's most of standard.
And Dreadbore was most times just another creature kill card. It occasionally kills PWs, but late game my deck is fine. It's weakness is in the early game, where BG Zombies will beat me by t3. I need to kill Lotleth Troll when it drops, can't have hasty things (Dreg Mangler ) beating my face in.
I think I will run it in the board though.
I was just looking at the deck, noticed Liliana, then I saw the one copy of card:Devil's Play.
Remove Thragtusk, Run Desecration Demon. 6/6 for 4, with flying > 5/3 even with life gain. An extra blocker is nice, but a 6/6 flyer is a win condition by itself.
Desecration Demon does nothing but beat face. He can't attack or block if the opponent says no. He belongs in an aggro deck, not a midrange. Thragtusk helps me stabilize health wise, and after a board wipe still lingers.
This list looks great man! I agree with you on Liliana of the Dark Realms over Vraska the Unseen . I think Vraska is a fantastic sideboard option against control decks though. She plays a lot like Karn Liberated in those match ups. You could also get a similar effect with Dreadbore . The biggest problem for these kinds of decks are planeswalkers, so I would definitely dedicate maybe 2 slots to one of those 2 cards, depending on if you need more early removal or if you need a better late game threat that provides a different line of attack. I only think you need 2 Liliana of the Dark Realms though. Also, adding to your thought, I think that card:Rakdos's Return is also great against control and midrange decks. Definitely include 2 in the sideboard. Once again, it just provides a different angle on which your deck can attack. List is solid! +1 from me! :)
I agree with that, marth017, and I will try to find room for her in the sideboard. I'm not doing a lot of SB editing currently though, mostly testing out the MB on cockatrice, and it's faring pretty well.
And you're right about Dreadbore . but I think that belongs in the SB against midrange/control decks running PW's.
Thanks for the +1's guys, I totally appreciate it!
lili survives abrupt decay. they won't print 3 mana or less walkers this black because they are also printing a card that will always be played and kills 3 or less cmc stuff. They want their walkers to not be pointless, and there is already a 2 mana card to kill them (dreadbore)
Disciple of Bolas seems like a weak link. What are you sacing, a Huntmaster Wolf token? Doesn't seem super worth it at four mana.
With Disciple of Bolas I generally try to sac a Thragtusk . It's insane card draw + a total of 10 life gain, which is game changing. However, I've noticed that it is sometimes a dead draw, and am currently testing Deathrite Shaman in it's stead.
I'm not understanding how Liliana of the Dark Realms can get you Green mana for mana fixing Tyqar? She can help you get swamps, yeah? What am I missing?
Haha, i knew i was missing something... sweet! Figured I'd ask, rather than sit here scratching my dome piece for 15 minutes.
