Creature (1)

The Hulk Pile

Shuffle Hulk has the following cards as its primary Hulk pile: Cephalid Ilusionists; Nomads en-Kor; Carrion Feeder; and Zulaport Cutthroat. One these creatures are in play, we repeatedly use Nomads en-Kor to target Cephalid Illusionist to mill our library. We will continue to do this until we hit Narcomoeba, putting it back into play. It can then be sacrificed to Carrion Feeder to trigger Zulaport Cutthroat’s ability causing each opponent to lose 1 life. We then continue to mill our library until we hit Kozilek, Butcher of Truth which will cause the cards in our graveyard to be shuffled back into our library. Rinse and repeat.

Multi-Hulking

This refers to the use of multiple Hulk triggers in order to deal with problematic artifacts, creatures, enchantments or situations such as drawing into a combo piece. Instead of our generic Hulk pile, our initial pile will be composed of, Nomads en-Kor, a sac engine such as Carrion Feeder, either Body Snatcher or Academy Rector (Hulk Doublers).

In this line, we use Body Snatcher to get rid of combo pieces that happen to get stuck in our hand or recur pieces that are in our graveyard. Academy Rector is used to deal with problematic artifacts, creatures or enchantments by using the second Hulk trigger to put the missing combo pieces and Leonin Relic-Warder or Gilded Drake to exile or steal them, clearing our path to victory.

Alternative Combo Lines

Necro Hulk

This is a good alternative for Flash Hulk since it can also be used at instant speed. The only drawback is that it wins at the end of a turn and requires 4 mana to play, two of which are Black. Here we use Entomb to put Protean Hulk from out library into the graveyard. We follow this up with an instant-speed Necromancy to put the Hulk back into play only to die at the end of turn. Hulk triggers. We win.

Schrodinger’s Cat

This Flash Hulk line requires a sac engine in play. We can go with Blood Artist and Body Snatcher for the first Hulk trigger and Leonin-Relic Warder and Academy Rector for the second. We then sacrifice both the Relic-Warder and Academy Rector. Rector’s ability triggers allowing us to search for Necromancy. We use it to reanimate Relic-Warder which exiles Necromancy. This creates a loop that brings all our opponents down to 0 life.

Rector Rebirth

This is my least preferred line but still a very effective one. It requires Academy Rector, any creature and a sac engine to play. First, we sacrifice the Rector to the engine to search for Pattern of Rebirth and attach it to any creature we own. The said creature is then sacrificed to the engine to cheat the Hulk out. The Hulk is also sacrificed to the sac engine to put the rest of the combo into play.

The Deck

The deck is built heavily around Flash Hulk. Aside from the combo pieces, the deck is composed of tutors, counter-magic and utility spells that will ensure we are able to play and protect our Flash Hulk combo quickly, consistently and successfully. The deck also has a reanimation package that makes the reanimation and removal of Protean Hulk a viable alternative to casting Flash.

Turn Zero

Some of you are probably reading this article because of this so let’s get to it. Unless we are the first to play, this deck can win even before the game begins and this is how it is done. In our opening hand we want Elvish Spirit Guide, Gemstone Caverns, Flash and Protean Hulk or Summoner’s Pact. With the Cavern in our opening hand, we begin the game with the Cavern in play (and able to produce Blue mana). During our opponent’s draw phase, exile Elvish Spirit guide from our hand to add one Green mana and tap the Caverns for Blue. This gives us enough mana to play Flash Hulk for the win; before our first turn; before anyone plays a land. Game, set, match.
