Turn 4 Atarka Turn 5 Ulamog was a lot of fun. Sadly the Dragonlords of Tarkir have cycled out, in lieu of freight trains and hot rods.
Fortunately we have Modern, and with a bigger card pool and faster games we need to speed things up a turn. While we're at it, let's upgrade our Ulamog, despite his utter awesomeness, for the most powerful Eldrazi Titan:
Emrakul, the Aeons Torn
. She can be summoned at will by
Nahiri, the Harbinger
...doing what she was designed to do.
Most people won't like that summoning, and so
Dragonlord Atarka
becomes a plan B so
Dragonlord Dromoka
can come down a turn before Emrakul to prevent any removal or countermagic. That's ...
Turn 1: Green land (WH, WF, SG, TG, Forest),
Arbor Elf
Turn 2: Land (untapped),
Utopia Sprawl
on your untapped land (Forest, SG, TG), choose unrepresented color (for example, if played on SG name white, if on TG name red). Tap, float and , untap with Arbor Elf, tap again, play
Nahiri, the Harbinger
. Use her +2.
Turn 3: Use Nahiri's +2. Play land. Either generate 6 mana with Elf/Sprawl combo, cast
Dragonlord Dromoka
. Or: if you have another
Utopia Sprawl
play it on the untapped land to generate 6 mana. If you don't pull a 3rd land but have Sprawl, tap the unenchanted land to cast Sprawl on the already enchanted untapped land to tap/untapped/tap for 6 mana.
Turn 4: Ultimate Nahiri to tutor and play
Emrakul, the Aeons Torn
. Swing with "her" and Dromoka for game. Untapped mana and cards in hand?
Path to Exile
and/or
Lightning Bolt
can clear the way of attackers. GG.
The rest of the deck aims to delay the game enough to combo out like this.
Loxodon Smiter
comes down turn 2 when you can't play Nahiri due to lack of one of the mana combo pieces, and can protect Nahiri or your life total.
Tireless Tracker
gives clues to draw gas and outlet unused mana, and works particularly well with fetch lands.
Huntmaster of the Fells
is mostly there to protect Nahiri from creatures and pad the life total a tad to get to turn 4 and 5 against Burn, Aggro, etc. Also can be helpful with all the Fetchlands and Shockland.
Kessig Wolf Run
provides a mana-outlet, and can easily give Emrakul enough of a boost to swing for lethal.
Notes:
Arbor Elf
is the ideal turn 1 play as you can draw into a
Utopia Sprawl
potentially to still pull off the combo.
If you have multiple Sprawls in hand and an Arbor Elf in play you can play two on the same land to generate 6 mana. This is helpful if you only have 1 Forest in play. Just watch out for
Ghost Quarter
.
Drawing Emrakul isn't bad as you can discard her to Nahiri's ability, with the added bonus of shuffling your graveyard into library. Same goes for duplicates of Nahiri or other cards that lose value as the game progresses (I'm looking at you
Birds of Paradise
!)
Nahiri, the Harbinger
can remove combo pieces or lethal threats with her minus, which clearly delays her Harbingering but if it keeps you in the game it's worth it, and Dromoka and the creatures can still be chipping away.
Input and upvotes appreciated as always!
If it's good enough to put in a folder, do me a solid and upvote the deck as well! Takes just a second of time but brings me great joy: good karma all around!
More to come... sideboard as well. Still playtesting to try and get a idea of how often I can execute the namesake turn progression.
