Merfolk have been around in Magic: The Gathering since the days of Alpha where we saw them for the first time in the form of cards such as Merfolk of the Pearl Trident and Lord of Atlantis. The game has changed a lot since its conception in 1993 but despite all the new cards, editions, mechanics and rules, Merfolk continues to thrive in multiple formats and prove its resilience as a tribe.

One format where Merfolk is enjoying its greatest success -and has been doing so for quite some time- is Modern. This is my take on the traditional and tested mono- variant, boasting staples like the Merfolk lords (Lord of Atlantis and Master of the Pearl Trident) whilst continually striving to look for new and interesting solutions addressing the ever-changing challenges of the meta-game, such as Master of Waves and Smuggler's Copter.
