Sideboard

Creature (1)

This is not your typical Kaalia deck. Well actually it is. It's pretty much like every other Kaalia deck on the market. The difference, is in the consistency. There are many ways to protect our favorite angel-demon-dragon-cleric Glass-bombshell, and ways to abuse the ability to attack.

Early Game: The best opening hand will get you four mana with all the colours of Mardu, any combination works of mana rocks, lands, the quicker we get our colours the better. Bonus points if we have protection and a threat in our hands too. The goal is to go as fast as possible with cards like Bloodlust Inciter, Goblin Motivator, Swiftfoot Boots, Lightning Greaves, and Hall of the Bandit Lord. This can't always work, so if we don't get this setup, play for the long game. Counterspell decks will look to slow down Kaalia hitting the board, so baiting out counterspells and playing the table against each other can be used to setup the explosive turns. It may seem silly but a lot of tables will feel threatened but won't target us if Kaalia waits to come out. Play it like a poker game.

Protection/Evasion: A threat like Kaalia on such a fragile 2/2 body means protection is important. Fast game should be looking at ideally Mother of Runes, slow games should have Darksteel Plate or Rogue's Passage on the field before attacking. Enchantments such as Nahiri's Machinations provide free indestructibility for just two mana, and Reconnaissance provides pseudo-vigilance. What makes Reconnaissance so good is the way the combat step works. All Kaalia needs is to attack, and that comes from the declare attacks step. At any point, even in response to blocks, we can remove Kaalia from combat and give her protection. It even works with what she brings in, putting up blockers and a strong board presence to prevent retaliation. Instant speed protections such as Boros Charm and Teferi's Protection prevent board wipes and mass removal. If you are feeling bold and can finish the game next turn, use Chance for Glory.

Tutors: Part of what makes this deck so much fun is the adaptability to a lot of situations. Vampiric Tutor, Enlightened Tutor and Insidious Dreams all will find the setup pieces. Rune-Scarred Demon gets a search and an etb attack, and Razaketh, the Foulblooded is the big daddy of it all. Razaketh will search even more cards to hand, so in response to removal or board wipes, just sacrifice to Razaketh and set yourself up for an even bigger next turn.

Drop Bombs on em: The big ones. Avacyn, Angel of Hope, Razaketh, Balefire Dragon, Gisela, Blade of Goldnight, Rakdos, Lord of Riots, and Skithiryx, the Blight Dragon are the threats to be looking for in the deck. Dragon Mage draws cards from combat damage which is a guarantee most times, and the rest of the Angels, Demons, and Dragons are consistent threats to keep pressure on the board. Speaking of Avacyn though...

Combos your table will hate: There is one infinite combo here. Nothing too hard, it requires Sword of Feast and Famine, Hellkite Charger, and 7 mana. Equip Sword, connect and pay 7 to get an extra combat phase. Boom. Infinite combat phases. Now what about Avacyn? Well, she comes into play when we have cards like Jokulhaups, Wrath of God and Armageddon. Indestructible plus mass destruction to wipe the board of everyone but us. It confirms the win and makes it near impossible to recover from. If we can't win from straight up pressure, nuke the board and swing with Kaalia. Another one hit turn combo is Master of Cruelties and Rogue's Passage. If Master of Cruelties enters from Kaalia and isn't blocked, its ability happens first before combat damage, and then Kaalia hits dealing 2 damage and knocking them out. Crazy.
