Zur Toolbox Control

The deck looks to control the game by finding appropriate answers and gaining card advantage with Zur and powerful enchantments. If you hate feeling stuck with no way out in your EDH games, this is a deck for you. We always have the answer.

Protecting Zur

Zur is a really useful part of our strategy, finding us what we need for any situation. However your opponents will know this, so a good chunk of our deck is dedicated to protecting him. Most methods are straightforward but I'm going to mention a few particular ones.

Vanishing is the ideal protection. If we have enough mana available, Zur is basically invulnerable.

If we have an early tutor we usually want to get Lightning Greaves out and ready for casting Zur as this provides immediate protection and haste for Zur.

We also run a decent amount of counter magic to protect Zur and ourselves. These should be used prudently, only countering effects which will seriously affect our game plan.

Quick note about Shielded by Faith . We can cast this on an opponent's creature turn three and then attach it to Zur when we play him on turn four for immediate protection.

Enchantment Combos

  1. Phyrexian Arena / Rhystic Study / Necropotence + Solitary Confinement . This makes us extremely hard to kill and also protects Zur from sacrifice effects. This combo is usually the first one we want to establish in a game.

  2. Energy Field + Rest in Peace . This prevents all damage dealt to us. This combo is more delicate and provides less protection than Solitary Confinement so is often second choice to the combo above, but it gives us our draw step and is an extremely useful back up.

  3. Shutting down enemy commanders with Imprisoned in the Moon . Not so much as combo, outside the fact we can tutor for them, but important to mention. IIM is the best answer to an on board commander, stopping it from going back to the command zone. Having effective answers to commanders is a very powerful tool against many decks.

Despite a good chunk of the deck being geared towards protecting Zur, sometimes things don't work out and he dies. The deck can operate and win without him, but due to our lack of creatures we need to play extremely conservatively to survive. Finding our protective enchantments and card advantage in this case is the prior Apart from these combos, there are many utility enchantments which can help in a wide variety of situations. Being familiar with the effects you have access too will enable you to work around many tough spots.

When the time comes to win there are four main strategies

  1. Voltron up Zur with Empyrial Armor after finding Necropotence . Also, we can surprise our opponent by tutoring up Copy Enchantment to copy Empyrial Armor and deal a ton of damage. Ethereal Armor is a slower but more consistent option.

  2. Helm of Obedience + Rest in Peace to exile an opponents library. Be careful setting this up as without an active Tezzeret the Seeker as we can only deal with one opponent per turn and it will paint us as a massive target. NB Rest in Peace is a fantastic card to be able to tutor for. Many popular decks are crippled by losing access to their graveyard. Its not just to combo with Helm of Obedience or Energy Field

  3. Luminarch Ascension (+ Solitary Confinement /Pillow fort). Once we have our walls up, its pretty easy to get this active and start pumping out angels to win the game.

  4. Replenish / Open the Vaults . Not always a definitive win, but resolving one of these many turns in will often give us enough value to finish the game.

In the sideboard are some nastier options.

  1. Daybreak Coronet + Stasis (+ Tezzeret the Seeker to keep untapping mana). This stops everyone untapping whilst we attack with Zur to end the game. I'm not running this one as its tricky to assemble and if our opponents wriggle out of is we will not be very popular.

  2. Cataclysm . A very powerful effect if we have Zur out, crippling our opponents whilst our plan remains functional. However, land destruction sucks and is not fun for a lot of groups. Feel free to run if that doesn't worry you.

I hope you enjoy the deck and feel free to give it a vote if it was useful!
