Time for some Alignement (Update for Gameday HOU)

Standard* Combo Control Theme/Gimmick WUB (Esper)

Maybeboard

I always wanted to make an Hedron Aligment deck since it was released. Check out usurphling's deck Bontu's Reckoning of Hedron Alignments [HOU]. The deck is pretty sweet and that's what actually made me do the jump and make my own.

Has proven itself numerous times.

  • Torrential Gearhulk: this card is busted. As soon as you are playing a control deck with a lot of blue, you put it in the deck.

Susceptible to change

  • Archfiend of Ifnir: Good stats for the cost, it has good synergy with discarding, which our deck does quite a bit. Can work as a pseudo repeatable board wipe, survives to Yahenni's Expertise and could shrink Heart of Kiran at instant speed (if you can discard) and block it.

Contender

Counters

  • Censor: I'm still not fan of this. It is pretty good early, when you can either cast this on turn 2 or an Anticipate depending of what your opponent do. It can also sometimes get a fatty later if your opponent tapped out. Also has some synergy with Archfiend of Ifnir which is in the deck at the moment. If the demon gets out, I might just change those for Negate or more Void Shatter.

  • Void Shatter: Talking about it, well, Cancel with upside. Note that you can also counter your own Hedron Aligment if you are desparate to get one in the exile zone, I did it once.

  • Disallow: I like running at least one in the mainboard in case there is a trigger that would need to be countered.

Removals

  • Fatal Push: Good to kill small creatures, manadorks or a pesky Heart of Kiran. I might replace it for Grasp of Darkness since it can kill more stuff, and his a better target for Gearhulk. Also kills Gideon of the Trials.

  • Anguished Unmaking: Good for exiling other non-creature permanents or Ulamog, the Ceaseless Hunger. Note that you can also exile your own Hedron Aligment at instant speed. The more options, the better.

  • Cast Out: Another way to get rid of non-creature permanents or eldrazi titans. Note that you can't target your Hedron with that, I got caught once and by chance I had Anguished Unmaking in hand to fix this.

  • Never//Return: A way to get rid of pesky planeswalker and big fat creatures. Sometimes you kill a Wolf token, but you gotta do what you gotta do to stay alive. Note that you can exile a hedron with Return, or a Scrapheap Scrounger in your opponents graveyard.

  • Yahenni's Expertise: Bord wipe mainboard. People are generally not expecting this mainboard so it is a big element of surprise. I often chain cast a Hedron with it, sometimes Collective Brutality. Note that you can escalate even if it is cast from the expertise.

  • Collective Brutality: One of the best card of the deck. Helps discard Hedron Aligment, triggers Archfiend of Ifnir's ability and then you can either leach your opponent, kill something and or check your opponents hand to clear the way of counter or just see what they got and plan what you are going to play accordingly.

  • Anticipate: Bread and butter. One of the best hands has 2 to 3 lands, an anticipate, a counter spell and some removal.

  • Pull from Tomorrow: Pretty awesome card. I often cast it to draw 4 or 5 cards. Sometimes you cast it to draw 2 or 1. Pretty funny to flashback with a Torrential Gearhulk just to discard a Hedron Aligment at the end of your opponent's turn to win on yours.

  • Glimmer of Genius: I didn't want to run too many Pull from Tomorrow because I wanted to have more targets for Torrential Gearhulk. Also, for 4, you get to scry and does not have to discard.

  • Secret Salvage: This card could have been named "Prepare for Aligment" because that's pretty much it's was kind of made for it. So yeah, that's what helps you do it. I don't run more than one because having more than one in hand does not help you at all. Though it can be used to get other cards than Hedrons. I used it once to get my other Gearhulks or even a Transgress the Mind because I knew my opponent had a Sphinx of the Final Word in hands.

  • Jace, Unraveler of Secrets: Good card draw engine. Can also bounce threats and isn't too hard to ultimate. In control matchup, he is a beast.

  • Sorin, Grim Nemesis: Also a good card draw engine in addition to deal damage. He can also help remove threats (and get some life in bonus). Note that Never//Return deals 7 damage to your opponent when you reveal it with his +1.

  • I don't want to stay too long here, but just wanted to mention a few things. The mana base is pretty hard has we want to take advandate of white spells (Fumigate, Cast Out, etc.) so we are running a few dual lands, but this make it so that most of the lands enters the battlefield tapped.
  • Prairie Stream: Two of these instead of a full playset of Irrigated Farmland since it has some chances to enter the battlefield untap. Quite important for our source as when we need to cast Fumigate, it is generally on turn 5-6 in a hurry to stay alive.

  • Concealed Courtyard: Same of this land, instead of 4 Shambling Vent, more chances to get a untapped. Also does not hurt our Plain/Swamp count since it isn't a basic type.

  • Evolving Wilds: Just one, because sometimes you need to get the basic your need. Don't expect to combo with Fatal Push for the revolt though.

  • Fetid Pools + Irrigated Farmland : Helps Choked Estuary enters the battlefield untap. Cycling those in late game is pretty good, better if it triggers Archfiend of Ifnir.

  • Geier Reach Sanitarium: Somewhat card draw. Mostly there to discard Hedron Aligment.

  • Sphinx of the Final Word: Against control matchup. Note that if you opponent is heavily blue, he/she likely have one too.

  • Disallow: More counterspells.

  • Negate: Even more counterspells. I ofthen replace the Cencor by those against control mirrors.

  • Transgress the Mind: Good against midrange, combo and control decks.

  • Fumigate: More board wipes. Also lifegain. Since we have a quite low creature count, it hurts our opponent more than us, Though sometimes we are running Kalitas at the same time.

  • Kalitas, Traitor of Ghet: Lifegain. Goes pretty well with Yahenni's Expertise since it does not kill her and often generate a few zombie tokens.

  • Authority of the Consuls: Slowdown aggro matchup and heal us a bit.

  • Lost Legacy: I prefer this over Disposses to remove eldrazi titans, Approach the Second Sun or other combo/win con pieces.

  • Ob Nixilis Reignited: I have yet found a time where I sided in Oby. I'll do a few other games before I decide if I keep him or try Dovin Baan instead.

  • Restoration Specialist: I have one just in case I get against a match up where I get too many Hedron Aligment into my graveyard, either by milling or discard and I need to get some back. Note that it can also get a Torrential Gearhulk back. Also note that it does not need to be tapped to do the ability, so you can do it in reponse of removal even if it is summoning sick.

    Updates Add

With the results of the last pro tour, I suspect aggro being quite popular.

    Mainboard

2x Kalitas, Traitor of Ghet have been promoted to the mainboard.

1x Grasp of Darkness also replaced a Censor to deal with Hazoret the Fervent.

1x Supreme Will replaced the second Censor since I think the extra mana for the mode is good enough.

Removed the Evolving Wilds and a Shambling Vent for 2 Aether Hub to guarantee more untap lands and I changed a Pull from Tomorrow for a Glimmer of Genius. Also changed a Anticipate for a Strategic Planning. If it was an instant, I would have added more.

    Sideboard

2x Thing in the Ice  Flip (Removed a Disallow and Archfiend)

2x Solemnity (Removed Ob Nixils and Restoration Specialist)

1x Kefnet the Mindful (Removed a Fumigate)

    1x Jace
