Thrasios and Kydele: Eldrazi Envoys

Commander / EDH* Aggro Eldrazi G/U (Simic) Ramp

MegaMatt13

Description

Thrasios and Kydele are using their wizardy to summon giant eldrazi to the plane! They use their ability to flood you with mana and card draw to drown out opponents with card draw. Giant Eldrazi or a massive Genesis Wave finish off opponents. This deck is for you if you like to have an excuse to draw insane amounts of cards and swing with giant Eldrazi.

More description coming soon.

This isn't a combo deck or win via Laboratory Maniac deck.

Please offer feedback and upvote if you like!

Thrasios and Kydele's abilities synergize to create a magic machine of cards and mana. The deck runs a far above average amount of card draw spells to get the engine going. Draw cards, ramp with Kydele, dump mana into Thrasios to draw more cards....repeat! This magic machine needs to be sparked by certain spells:

Training Grounds: This will reduce Thrasios' activation cost to 2, making it very easy to scry, ramp, and draw through the deck. This is probably my favourite card to have in my opening hand because I know I'll be able to get the engine humming faster.

Kruphix, God of Horizons: We're gonna need somewhere to dump our mana until we find an Eldrazi or X spell. Thrasios himself is certainly one great option. It's always good to have a plan B though. Kruphix provides us with an indestructible "bank" for our mana, keeping it safe while we dig for a win condition.

Thousand-Year Elixir, Aphetto Alchemist and Kiora's Follower: Allows you to untap Kydele. Often I will draw cards, tap Kydele, use that mana to draw more cards, untap Kydele and then tap her again for even more mana.

Brainstorm, Ponder, Preordain, and Serum Visions: Small "cantrip" cards that can help smooth out the deck and get the engine running. Brainstorm is particularly good because it counts as drawing 3 cards even though you have to put two back, giving Kydele a big boost.

Prime Speaker Zegana, Arcanis the Omnipotent, Magus of the Jar , and Azami, Lady of Scrolls: Card drawing wizards that help pump Kydele. Azami works great as both of the commanders are wizards.

Diminishing Returns + Time Reversal: Helps prevent self-milling while also digging deeper into the deck.

Recurring Insight: Draws a fistful of cards...twice! If this resolves I'm usually "going off" with my deck, casting Eldrazi left and right.

Rishkar's Expertise : Quickly becoming a green staple in Commander, this can draw a lot of cards and then gives you a free cast. Similar to Zegana, I don't mind using this even if I only have a medium-sized creature. It's still card advantage that will fuel the Kydele engine and give me a free spell.

Windfall: These "wheel" effects are great at digging deep into the deck and generating a lot of mana with Kydele. Cards like Eternal Witness and Artisan of Kozilek help recur any great cards that had to be discarded.

Kydele and Thrasios use their magic machine to summon large Eldrazi or giant X spells for the win.

Ulamog, the Infinite Gyre: a removal spell, indestructible, and annihilator 4 all wrapped into one scary beast.

Ulamog, the Ceaseless Hunger: milling opponents is a secondary win condition and this ulamog does it 20 cards at a time. Also acts as card advantage with exiling 2 permanents when cast.

Kozilek, Butcher of Truth: keeps the card draw machine humming on a giant annihilator 4 body.

Emrakul, the Promised End: The biggest of the bunch, she is challenging to remove, and comes with 2 types of evasion, and messes up an opponent's turn.

Bane of Bala Ged : annihilator wasn't brought back in BFZ, but this eldrazi has pseudo annihilator which in some ways is better because it exiles the permanents.

Artisan of Kozilek : Recursion on a giant beater.

World Breaker: great removal that can bring itself back from the grave.

Genesis Wave: a very fun win condition. It's easy to generate a ton of mana and put an absurd amount of permanents on to the battlefield.

Psychosis Crawler: easily a massive beater that can drain opponents for the kill.

Overbeing of Myth : Similar to Psychosis Crawler, this guy turns into a massive beater quickly. Also has enough devotion to "turn on" Kruphix and Thassa.

Concordant Crossroads: For some reason opponents keep on wanting to kill my Eldrazi before I can swing with them. Concordant Crossroads helps me go in for the alpha strike right away. Especially helpful when combined with a Genesis Wave.

Nothing feels worse than seeing Kozilek being chump blocked by a brave (and foolish) 1/1 goblin token. Our wizards have a few tricks up their sleeves to make sure that their Eldrazi overlords turn invisible get through. They can also help protect them from harm. Kydele and Thrasios also need ways to deal with opponent's threats while they get their magic machine running.

Whispersilk Cloak, Thassa, God of the Sea , and Rogue's Passage all make their beaters unblockable.

Lightning Greaves, Swiftfoot Boots, and Whispersilk Cloak protect them from targeted removal.

Beast Within, World Breaker, Reclamation Sage, Ulamog, the Ceaseless Hunger, and Ulamog, the Infinite Gyre: Targeted removal to disrupt opponents.

Whelming Wave and Evacuation: Mass removal. They synergize well with Eldrazi as you will be able to get the "cast triggers" again.

Counterspell, Arcane Denial, and Negate: This isn't really a counterspell/control deck. However, it's still helpful to have a few counters.

Updates

I'm loving this deck. One of the things I've noticed is that Genesis Wave is very often a key finisher. Because of that, I've wanted to increase the density of permanents in the deck compared to instants/sorceries. I've removed the countermagic with this in mind. It's actually refreshing to sometimes play blue without countermagic. The changes overall increase my permanent count so that there are only 20 non-permanents.

Counterspell + Negate ---> Song of the Dryads + Imprisoned in the Moon : With removing counterspells I wanted to ensure the deck still had a decent amount of removal. These two enchantments act as removal and can be hit with Genesis Wave.

Arcane Denial ---> Vizier of Tumbling Sands: Being able to untap Kydele is very useful. I like the flexibility of the vizier being able to untap her while being cycled away for another card.

Commit//Memory ---> Mulldrifter: I found Commit to Memory a little too expensive for what it did. Mulldrifter provides card draw attached to a body which is exactly what the deck wants.

Evacuation ---> Displacement Wave: The reason I switched to Displacement Wave is that I can control the value of X, protecting my Eldrazi while bouncing everything else.

Library of Leng ---> Spellbook : The Library's discard to the top of your library effect rarely mattered. I'd prefer a spell I can cast for free.

Like that you went for another theme!

It takes a little set-up but Illusionist's Bracers could be useful for copies of Kaseto's ability.

Nature's Will might be nice for mana tricks too.

Abres_Tenelles, thanks for the suggestion. I could see Nature's Will working well in here!

Cephalid Constable is amazing, especially if you can buff it a little.

Lure of Prey, Green Sun's Zenith and Lurking Predators, as well as the hideaway lands can help you cheat in your big creatures. Also Chord of Calling is great because it's an instant.

Cool idea, I think I want to give this a spin later (note to self!) as I think I have most of the things you included. Have you fired a successful Genesis Wave out of this? I presently have only one copy and I struggle with decision where to actually employ it, results were surprisingly poor in an old Selesnya deck where I last used it.

Velkaarn, thanks for your interest in the deck. It's still in its development but it is a lot of fun to play.

Yes, Genesis Wave works great in here. This deck produces so much mana that I've been able to cast it for insane amounts and get a lot of value. I'd only suggest it in a deck that's 75% or more permanents so that you get a lot of value off it.

I think my main issue with the previous deck I used the wave in was too many X-cost creatures, those don't really mix well!

Alright, an actual suggestion came to mind from last game session with Eldrazi, Void Winnower frustrated my opponents a great deal and they spent a lot of energy and effort in trying to rid of it while ignoring other threats, so if you have one you might want to give it a try?

Seedborn Muse, Awakening, and Training Grounds, have all proved to be complete game changers in my Thrasios & Kydele, Infinite Partners deck. The sheer number of times you can activate Thrasios's ability in a round with any of these cards is astounding. Awakening, unlike the Muse, is often allowed to resolve and stay in the field for a round, since your opponents think they will be able to benefit from it too. This quickly changes to an entire playgroup scrambling to remove it once they see just how much more it benefits you. And Training Grounds has proven to pay off far more than I'd expected. If you have 6 mana, you're activating Thrasios's ability 3 times instead of 1.

I linked my deck above. It's a combo version, so a lot of it isn't going to be along the lines you're looking, but if you're interested there are some good non-combo pieces in there.

Overall, very good deck. I love seeing these two actually partnered together.

I've found that Patron Wizard is also a fantastic card, since both your commanders are wizards. Plus, you can tap him and your commanders even with summoning sickness, due to the wording of the ability.

Sorry, I missed that you already had Training Grounds...

Velkaarn, I've thought about Void Winnower. Being on the receiving end of it before, I find him a little too "unfun" to play against. Certainly a powerful creature though.

RUST-O, glad you like. World Breaker is on my list of cards to get. Zegana I could also see going in here. With elder deep-fiend, I've had him in a different deck before and found him a bit too expensive for his effect even with the emerge cost. He is certainly on theme though.

JaysomeDecks, really like your infinite build. Looks deadly to play against. I only have one copy of Seedborn Muse and she is in my Rhys deck where I think she is more needed. I could see myself adding awakening though. Kydele and Thrasios would go bonkers with all that untapping.

For cuts, I see myself cutting trygon predator for world breaker. What other cuts should I make?

Quietman988, thanks for your card suggestions. I've thrown in Mosswort Bridge. I agree it's easy to trigger in here. I've put Lurking Predators into my maybelist. I love that card. It works great in my Xenagos: Zookeeper God deck. I just need to figure out what I'd cut for it in here.

My problem with Lure of Prey and Green Sun's Zenith is that they only work with Green creatures. The beaters I would want to cheat into play are mostly colourless Eldrazi.

Thanks for your help :)

New card from Amonkhet, Weaver of Currents would go great!

If you have the budget, Eye of Ugin, Eldrazi Temple, and Cavern of Souls are fun additions.

Lord.of.Innistrad, I've thrown in weaver of currents. Thanks for the suggestion

whatskraken, I've added eldrazi Temple to my list of cards to buy. Cavern of Souls is a little out of my budget.

Diminishing Returns has a downside that is almost meaningless in most Commander games. +1 from me on a fun build.

April 28, 2017 2:37 p.m.

MegaMatt13 says... #18

VesuvanDoppelbanger, do you think Diminishing Returns is better than Time Reversal which is on my maybe list? It's one mana cheaper but requires me to exile 20 cards. Having a hard time deciding which i like better.

April 28, 2017 3:04 p.m.

Ask yourself, about how many cards are left in-deck when most of your games are over? If the answer is > 20, I don't think that will be an issue.

Oh, and Frantic Search would be a good one to throw in there. Who doesn't like free?

VesuvanDoppelbanger, you've convinced me on Diminishing Returns. Now I just don't know what to cut.

My favorite way to cheez out a eldrazi titan is definitely Counterlash. Deny them a creature AND get a free titan too. What's not to love?

ThatEDMguy, thanks for the feedback. I've added Paradox Engine to the maybelist :) Always have difficulty deciding what to cut

ERoss8 says... #24

You have From Beyond, so is there any reason why there is no Awakening Zone? Both do basically the same thing, only AZ is cheaper (3 CMC as apposed to FB's 4), and FB has a tutor ability. (and actual cost)

May 15, 2017 3:38 p.m.

MegaMatt13 says... #25

Hi ERoss8, thanks for the suggestion. I primarily have From Beyond in there for the tutor ability, not the tokens. Awakening Zone would only give me the tokens. It's a great card and I include it in one of my token decks. However, I don't think it fits so much in here. Thanks again :)
