So here's my mono-black EDH deck. I like to think of it as semi-competitive, but others may disagree.

It all started with an idea I had at work (shortly before the Shrek is Love craze started for most people), "I wonder if there is a black ogre I could run as a commander, because I think it would be hilarious to name a deck This is my Swamp". To my surprise, and frankly my luck, there is only one, being Kuon, Ogre Ascendant . After looking at what he did, it was pretty obvious that I would build a deck that focused on board control and tokens to keep my good creatures alive. Here's the result:

Board control:The meat of the deck is focused on controlling the board state, mainly destroying creatures, to give me a chance to attack with no blockers.Avatar of Woe, Phyrexian Obliterator (kinda), Kuon, Ogre Ascendant , Royal Assassin, Sheoldred, Whispering One, Gate to Phyrexia, Innocent Blood, Profane Command, Go for the Throat, Murder, Hero's Downfall, Attrition, Smokestack and Grave Pact.

Board Wipes:Just in case I need to get rid of everything, and preferably with another spell to bring back something (like Sheoldred, Whispering One) in my hand. Reiver Demon , Toxic Deluge, Plague Wind, Life's Finale, In Garruk's Wake, Damnation and Decree of Pain.

Tutor Cards:So I can find what I need.Rune-Scarred Demon (which combos very well with Sheoldred, Whispering One when Kuon, Ogre Ascendant flips), Expedition Map, Liliana Vess, Liliana of the Dark Realms, Beseech the Queen, Demonic Tutor, Diabolic Revelation and Diabolic Tutor.

Reanimate/ Graveyard Love:So that I can bring back important things, either mine or an opponent's.Geth, Lord of the Vault, Hell's Caretaker, Ink-Eyes, Servant of Oni, It That Betrays, Mikaeus, the Unhallowed, Reassembling Skeleton, Sepulchral Primordial, Sheoldred, Whispering One, Liliana Vess, Profane Command, Reanimate, Volrath's Stronghold, Cauldron of Souls, Rise of the Dark Realms, Stitch Together, Grave Betrayal and Oversold Cemetery.

Ramp/ Card Draw:A little bit of ramp in the deck so that I can get my things out faster, and some card draw so I can get my things faster.Bloodgift Demon, Crypt Ghast, Harvester of Souls, Nirkana Revenant, Decree of Pain, Sol Ring, Thran Dynamo, Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth + Cabal Coffers, Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx, Black Market, Phyrexian Arena and Liliana of the Dark Realms.

Fun Black Stuff:Cards that didn't fit into any category, but are still useful in the deck.Erebos, God of the Dead, Grave Titan, Kokusho, the Evening Star, Massacre Wurm, Crawlspace, Whip of Erebos, Exsanguinate, Bitterblossom, Contamination, Painful Quandary, Underworld Dreams and Sorin Markov.
