Full Moon Over Amonkhet —April 23, 2017

With the release of Amonkhet coming, it's time to evaluate some new cards for the howlpack:

Vizier of the Menagerie seems like a powerful addition to a creature-based deck such as this. It allows for color fixing and allows me to set up my casting a bit more smoothly.

Champion of Rhonas's exert ability is of some interest to this deck as it allows me to add a second copy of Elvish Piper to the deck which helps better control my flipping.

Sheltered Thicket is just another nice dual land to add to the deck and can be a later game piece of card draw if need be.

These are the biggest 3 priority cards I'm considering but there could be other gems that I have yet to try.

I just read what you wrote about draw.I went ahead and started working on a Jund werewolf deck about a week ago, with black being the smallest color on the pie. Draw is important, so is getting stuff back if you go that route. I picked Kresh. I keep flip-flopping on which draw cards. The engine of my deck has burgeoning, exploration to feed also with cards, so you end up with lands and draw, then Kresh needs equipment, so I am seeing fewer and fewer werewolves/wolves in my werewolf deck.

tomb14, City of Solitude is an option I likewise haven't considered so I would like to thank you as well for the idea.

Also Wizno I would say that if you were going to include a haste enabler, you should go with Urabrask the Hidden. You get so much value out of a 4/4, least of which is a creature you can help control the battlefield with (in a limited and temporary way granted)

@ tomb14: I would be curious to see how your Jund variant does. I considered using Kresh as well so I could have access to all of the good stuff Black provides. Plus, you get to play some of the old school werewolves! Best of luck on the deck.

@ TheACTR: I have been strongly considering Urabrask for some time now as his abilities would help buy me some time to get in some quick damage. I'm still evaluating which creatures are contributing most to my deck and which are going to be cut but I can see Urabrask having a spot.

While not the most admirable route to victory, I have considered adding in Triumph of the Hordes as a possible game closer since the deck is easily capable of 10 point swings (especially with trample).

I will let you know if and when I get to play it. I will do a write up. I play against decks that are twice as expensive and one is a bunch of combos and the other is blue/white control. Baptism by fire...

I can understand the desire to run Triumph of the Hordes to end games especially with a deck that starts a little on the lower end of the power scale.

My suggestion for a card you can swap out for Urabrask the Hidden would be Heartwood Storyteller. The punisher effect is nice but feeding resources to other decks is more than likely going to benefit them way more than it does you.

Other than that, a few all stars in my deck have been Kessig Cagebreakers, Feed the Pack, and Greater Good. Aside from the fact that the three play nice together, they all individually help. Cagebreakers makes recovering from board wipes trivial, Greater Good can help with card advantage and protects from exile removal (and if a creature is dying anyways you might as well get something out of it) and lastly Feed the Pack can turn a single buffed creature into a small army that loves Shared Animosity. Aether Vial is also nice as it is a second copy of Yisan that doesn't require mana. But for the life of me I can't think of what else you might could sub out for these possible additions.

I've played my deck against similar style decks that you mentioned tomb14. My meta is rampant with Storm players which I feel are the supreme enemy of the werewolf so just get in early and be relentless!

You've stumbled upon my biggest issue TheACTR! I'm running out of cards to cut as I feel my deck is reaching it's maximum level of tuning while still holding on to a strong tribal theme. I haven't had a chance to play Heartwood Storyteller but I am concerned for the same reasons as you. I like to usually get a game or two with each new card to really begin evaluating it's worth but I could see it getting the axe. Shrill Howler  Flip, Conduit of Storms  Flip, and Ulrich's Kindred are currently the closest to getting the axe. The latter in particular is a tough call for me because the indestructible is nice but having to swing and sink a fair amount of mana is tough some times.

I would agree that Shrill Howler  Flip and Ulrich's Kindred Make good candidates for the axe. I refuse to play the howler as I feel it was a missed opportunity to be a good wolf/werewolf support card and instead they made it eldrazi support. The latter, as you have already noticed is a pretty heavy mana sink for a limited ability in terms of use. I love Conduit of Storms but I can see how his usefulness varies. My concern now would be that you are removing 3 creatures and I am suggesting you add 2 so you are losing bodies. For a Gruul deck based on tribal interactions losing creatures hurts.

After taking another look at my own deck I can make a couple more suggestions for creatures you could replace those three with:Adaptive AutomatonTaurean MaulerChameleon ColossusTangleclaw Werewolf  FlipVildin-Pack Outcast  FlipWolfir SilverheartThese are all really powerful or offer good utility and are almost always better to draw than Howler, Kindred, Storyteller or Conduit.

I appreciate your continued assistance in refining my deck some more TheACTR. Always nice to have community support. While I am considering removing some creatures, the utility creatures I would replace them with would likely make up for their loss. Adaptive Automaton and Metallic Mimic are likely 2 of my 3 slots since I could use some stronger lord-based support. I took out Vildin-Pack Outcast  Flip as I wanted a stronger big threat card. I'm leaning towards Urabrask the Hidden, Kessig Cagebreakers, or Vorinclex, Voice of Hunger in that role. I've realized that I have great early to mid-game threats but I need a few more things to be my big finish. I may cut a couple of my weaker low drop wolves/werewolves to bolster the late game threat level.

Sounds awesome to me, and I am happy to help.

Assembled Alphas performed well in my deck, and I put it in on accident, lol. Lambholt Pacifist has great value, and Gatstaf Shepherd is good at getting hits in.

I'm glad you found the selection of Vedalken Orrery brilliant tomb14! Being able to play everything at instant speed is quite nice to smooth out flipping and can lead to some interesting surprises (e.g., Triumph of the Hordes) during combat!

Seconded. The Orrery makes skipping your turn to flip werewolves bearable.
